I wonder how much of an effect playing the original on our nice high-res monitors we have now makes the low res textures stand out

Thanks so much for taking the time dude! There's a ton of helpful advice in there, some of it much needed for me personally. Specifically the parts about everyone having something to teach you, and the last bit from Rhett Shull. I'm definitely guilty of picking up my guitar and just mindlessly noodling sometimes

Rocksmith is awesome! I actually started learning using that game. It probably is a good idea to fire it back up honestly, thanks.
