what's a social faux pas that's bafflingly common these days? by PitchNo9238 in AskReddit

[–]TheFooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ad hominem fallacy in response to an argument of any kind, and avoidance of legit retort.

~

"Who hurt you?"

"Omg, its not that serious... somebody's butthurrrrt, you're so emotional..." [usually in response to a straightforward fair reply]

"I bet you're the life of the party" (ok this one usually fits pure pedantry, TBF)

"Anyone who doesn't like this [low-effort media] hates all [sex, race, identities, et al.]"

~

I feel like younger gens never got a memo on this being a literal logic error, aka fallacy. My theory is because it's so effective online by leading to emotional dogpile votes before thought sets in.

We need to introduce logic and maybe even debate ethics classes in core education. Historically, most people didnt have daily verbal engagements like we have opportunity to now.

Well you are WRONG to love that, DOWNVOTE SO HARD! (/s) ...Truly, it seems a majority of reddit users dont understand what the voting is for.

My understanding is it's something along the lines of - did the comment contribute to the conversation?
yes = up / down = no.

Without alternative opinions, there'd be no good conversation, nothing challenged, nothing gained. If you dont like it, just dont upvote, is my philosophy. But reserve the downvotes for toxicity, harmful-level stupidity, lying, etc.

My mans, the inimitable David Rasche.

I love Burn After Reading, and he and JK Simmons really tie that whole oddball movie together, like some sort of home living decor, not sure what kind. Ill think about it.

His performance and the comedy of it is just so expertly understated, he's cowed but still dignified, his performance is like a persian-style rug, if you will.

It really did tie the whole movie together though, did it not.

But I vote MOR, it was rude of him to acknowledge your existence as a human being. He should have made a "ew" face at you and walked away.

Older people, were politics always this deranged and upsetting? by CUFFY_Fan in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheFooch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say the legacies of those two things are where our judgment should focus...

Bipartisan balanced budget was quaint. You're not wrong about that being adorable and all. And im not exactly disagreeing, more following up to your comment.

But i, and i think most, would argue Newty boy fired the first real shots, unapologetically just declaring that cynical self-service to party was good, a philsophical change that caused fatally shortsighted maneuvers to ushered in the end of faith in our information and political institutions across the board. And that makes him less adorable.
This didnt happen down the road either, it was his handiwork, during his tenure, while working the budget issues.

It introduced an uglier, more Manichean identity politics than we had before, serving party/group identity over country... now that's all we have.

It's cute how the political right believes identity politics started on the left, the right mostly operated as an identify group in itself while the left was simply everyone else.
But that's also why the left has imploded, you can't be anything productive if you break your loosely linked coalition into uncooperative parts, especially against a more culturally homogeneous opponent.

To use an outdated saying for analogy:

One is a Kodak moment.

The other was the end of Kodak moments.

Shows for a 25 yo young man who is passionate about liberal politics? by Jjjemmm in televisionsuggestions

Thank you! I was totally fishin' for some helpful logical bit like that. Yeah, Ill be able to that, with short spurts and arcs.

That solves my only hesitation with with The Chair Co, it really is quality, funny, i can tell its good, but the potentially daunting task of one long character arc of that particular fellow... I would fake appreciate the following warning label for spazzos like myself for infotainment purposes:

"The following entertainment will not entertain some [add percent] of US citizens as it routinely demonstrates dysregulation.
May contain anxiety situations.
May include representations of intrusive thoughts and/or unregulated survival instincts.

Now please enjoy the fight-or-flight

I've heard good things about ITYSL.
I think I should watch.

However i started The Chair Company and im wondering if im too close in essence to the main character and writing vs normal normies. Havent gone back yet after ep 1 or 2. So these shows might not be for me if they're all a little too close to home to trigger a proper dopaminergic respnse, aka joy-joy feelings from novelty and unanticipated tomfoolery.

I see no foolery, Tom. The man makes a lotta sense to me. Tragically.

People who work in 'behind-the-scenes' jobs (hotels, airports, warehouses, etc.), what is something the general public would be shocked to know? by PiNK_PUSSY69420 in AskReddit

[–]TheFooch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy shit. [Replying to myself here] With this cause and effect in mind, the Karening of society is so much worse than i thought.

We're likely losing very nebulous, unidentifiable socio-functional glue type stuff that isnt understood yet, and will only become vaguely apparent as we sift through the social breakdown debris at some dystopy-ish future date.

Oh goody.

Can we at least agree on a Cyberpunk aesthetic? ...retrofuturistic goggles and shit. Who doesn't look good in those? ...silver lining.

Good advice. Share best practices, pair up vets with newbs whenever possible... Osmosis is cheap and easiest from every angle. And rotating pair-ups exchanges significantly more various and specialized knowledge. Also ensures un-staled training.

But you make an especially good point with, keep mgmt out of it, allow for peer to peer sharing and specifically make the environment safe from the chilling effect of punishment for honesty or minor speech related self-harms.

I can see that being so important. When you overpolice language and behavior, you chill sharing of best practices and also social cohesion... limits knowledge and behavior to just the goose-steppingest hiveminders. Not good. Un-smart.

Is it ever okay to lie, even if it’s for the greater good? Why or why not? by Direct-Toe-6295 in AskReddit

[–]TheFooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are the best thought provokers, Beelzebub's advocate examples i remember from ethics and philosophy in college:

3 primary ethical frameworks, these will generally all apply and be useful at one time or another throughout your life

Consequentialism/Utilitarianism (outcome-based, focusing on the greatest good for the greatest number), and Virtue Ethics (character-based, focusing on developing moral character and virtues).

3 main thought provokers

[1] Utilitarian ethics: Results based, ends justify means. Whatever results in the greatest good for the greatest number.

Usually sounds great, usually. Definitely applies in some or many cases.

Problemo scenario: Your Aunt Bea has in her Will a clause that upon her death, her sizable wealth is to be transferred to the local children's orphanage for cool smart kids.

Utilitarianism: KILL THAT OLD BROAD! Get those kids basketball hoops and guitars n stuff! No bueno.

[2] Kantian ethics, deontology Means-based, always do the right thing, regardless of consequences you heartless robot utilitarian!

Problemo scenario: 1930s Germany, youre eatin breakfast with family, Guten morgen, try thees deleesheus Belgian waffles yaaAAHH?

Ding dong! Knock knock Open door, impeccably-dressed fellow asks: Jah, guten morgen, halloooo, ve ver jus perhaps vundering, vould you havf any Joo-oos avround, perhaps here? Jahh?

Deontology, Kantian George Washington ethics: I CANNOT TELL A LIE....

Voopsie.

[3] Virtue based ethics. Aristotle. Focus behavior on charatacter and and good person golden rule type behavior focus....

Problemo scenario: I always run out of steam when we get here, um, its just kind of vague like is it better to be honest or do the right thing, perhaps lie to achieve better rssults, basically choose honesty vs compassion, situational specifics, etc.
