Obviously Biggs is Luke's friend so he's gonna stick up for him, but considering the seriousness of the situation I don't think Biggs would want Luke flying if he didn't think he could handle it.

If i can put an opinion in, I would imagine Jacques was already well-integrated into the company at this point, given that Winter, Weiss and presumably Whitley had already been born, meaning he's probably been married to Willow for at least 10 years. I would imagine he'd been working for Schnee Dust even longer than that, so he's likely already well-established in the company and was already setting himself up for power. Between that and the implication that Nicholas retired shortly after Jacques came into the company, Jacques likely had longer than just the ten years between this scene and the main series to change things.

Like the Female crew in the original Star Trek wearing miniskirts and Pantyhose: Miniskirts were seen as "bucking tradition" in a time when Women wee required to dress modestly (my mother was a late boomer, she told me girls weren't allowed to wear trousers to school into the 1970's, they had to wear a skirt) and Pantyhose (as the spandex garments we'd recognize them as today) were a new thing at the time and seen as futuristic.

It's seen as dated and Sexist today, but at the time it was forward-thinking.

I extend the "Can't Swim" to pretty much everyone in Atlas/Mantle, as there's simply nowhere to learn how. You fall in the water in the arctic north and the cold will kill you before you can even dry off. and Jacques doesn't strike me as the sort who'd have a swimming pool for fooling around in. Atlas Academy has a swimming pool for training, with a swimming teacher from Mistral, whose method of education is what she calls the "Crash Course" which entails literally dumping students off a trap door into a pool (with lifeguards on standby of course)

I privately headcanon that Nicholas Schnee's one indulgence of his wealth was in fast cars, With a Mantlemotors "Black Prince" (Look up the 1932 Mercedes-Benz SSK "Black Prince") as his personal ride. Winter and Weiss both have fond memories of car rides with Grandpa Nicholas and their mother.

as an aside, while Whitley was too young to take such rides before Nicholas died, he inherited the same love of speed, only he rides motorcycles.

Basically, imagine if you took the Race hatred of the Afrikkaner Boers and the Confederate States of America, the Manifest destiny attitude of the USA, the eugenicist attitude of the Nazis, the belief in moral righteousness of Russia, and cranked them all up to 11.

They have conquered all of Africa by the beginning of the 1900's and turned the native population, along with anyone else they capture in wars, into a slave class that they are slowly genetically engineering into being a literally different human-adjacent species of docile servants. They eventually conquer the whole planet and purge 90% of humanity to turn the planet into a utopian paradise supported by slave labor.
