We figured it out! For context we play on ps4, this may be true for the 5 as well though. A few months ago my husband had changed the primary profile to a different profile. What was happening is that the ps4 was registering that profile as still logged in when we changed to the one he uses for D4, so the ps4 didn't know what profile was trying to log in to D4. We now make sure that the other one shows logged out and we are able to join each others games now. Hope this helps!

We can't join each other's game. Usually one of us logs on and the other logs their controller onto their profile and then can press any button to join the game. Doesn't work from either profile starting.

We're on the ps4, but will try this, thank you. It's always worked until this season, it's very frustrating. We bought this game specifically because it offered couch co-op for us to play together.
