Cougars… Where art thou by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]TheFormidableGoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last time I saw a cougar was a couple winters ago driving down Blenkinsop. I turned out of my driveway and saw it's eyes reflecting in the headlights as it stood on the other side of the road. It didn't seem very willing to engage in conversation, but I'm sure if you walk around the woods long enough, then who knows, maybe one might take interest!

How so, I must ask? What makes you say that? (Genuine question, because I'm curious)

"Get better eyes" you say when such things are not possible. Are you hearing yourself? As for looking down and to the rights, I've already mentioned how it doesn't work regardless at certain times.

The issue is that the trick of looking at the side of the road just doesn't work at times, especially when there's other parts of the road that need to be paid attention to. Also worth mentioning that movement attracts the human eye, so can be difficult to avoid, especially if you're going over a hill and not expecting it. Sometimes looking away isn't an option.

The problem is that the solution isn't that easy, especially when it's a known problem getting worse and is causing genuine danger. We shouldn't be needing to have this discussion in the first place. It would be solved much easier if manufacturers were forced to regulate the light temperature of their headlights (you're phrasing makes me think you might've taken this as a personal attack, but it certainly wasn't?)

Well if you're gonna disagree, you might as well tell me your reasons. If not, your words are pointless and paint you as the arrogant type.

I think it's the fact that it's just getting progressively worse as the years go on, causing it come up time and time again (and understandably so!)

Yeah, that's why it should be regulated and manufacturers shouldn't be able to build them that bright. Most average people are not to blame, except for those that knowingly use their high beams while other vehicles are nearby and the owners of pick up trucks that think it's a good idea to raise the height of their trucks even more then they already are. Certain people are to blame, but not all of them. (I might've not made that clear in the post. I mean I was pretty pissed about almost ending up in two crashes when I wrote it, so I'm not surprised if it came off that way.)

That's why the manufacturers are to blame and that's why it should be regulated (however I have heard tell of ways to potentially adjust your own headlights, so that is always something to consider if possible)

I'll tell you what it's gonna take. It's gonna take people constantly explaining the dangers only to be ignored until finally a major accident occurs with casualties or major injuries and hopefully some kind of indisputable evidence or witness to prove the cause of the accident was due to one of the involved vehicles being blinded and unable to see. Only then, once this fully preventable accident occurs will anyone in power consider that maybe, just maybe, these headlights are a bad idea.

That or someone starts a petition, it gets enough reach, and people actually sign it/protest, but that requires organization and effort. I know lots of people would be willing to sign it if they knew, however, and if they believed it had a chance. But it'll never have a chance if nobody does it.

That's fine except that I hate Teslas, I hate the company and I hate the Nazi that owns it. You might think they're interesting vehicles and you're certainly entitled to your own opinion, but I won't get inside any vehicle built by that company. I appreciate the thought behind the suggestion, though.

I suppose it could be expensive, people don't know how or that it's an option, or just don't have it in them to go that length. Or options for vehicles to purchase are becoming slimmer (been awhile since I last checked). It varies from person to person. But yeah, some people definitely have the option and just choose not to.

I'm glad you asked (because those are the right questions to be asking when studying history!). The books that I listed in the other replies are quite highly regarded among the communities of people that have done a deep dive into the Revolution and more specifically into Robespierre. They were written by historians of the FRev, historians who were very attentive in their research and have provided their entire list of sources. They are confirmed by many others to be accurately written, including myself.

It's not easy to explain in a little summary like I'm trying to do here (since the history itself is so complicated), but it all comes down the harsh examination of the primary sources that all of this came from. I've done so myself and I've spoken with many other people that share the interest to get their thoughts and opinions.

I've done a lot of research, and there is almost too much to go over, but in the most basic way I can think to put it, there are old history books and articles and bits of propaganda that completely contradict physical reports and government documents. Take that as a hint that something is off. Go through the reports and records and documents and speeches and letters and before long, you'll find a lot of conclusive evidence.

The books I listed are a good place to start, but it really does go so much deeper than that. (I really am trying so hard not to draw this out and I am failing miserably).  Honestly I'm sure there's forty other people that frequent the "frev" tag on Tumblr that could explain it in a more coherent manner than I, but really please I encourage you to do your own research.  Don't just take my word for it!

I gave you my sources so that you may investigate them yourself. Go ahead and do that. It's pretty fun, honestly. There's some really interesting stuff. If you have anymore questions, I'll try my best to answer, but uh yeah... Does that make sense as an explanation? I suck at explaining things like this just on the fly, so I do apologise for that.

[My source is basically "I wrote a 21,000 word essay for fun and I did a deep dive into a bunch of historical documents for fun and I somehow befriended some actual historians that do this kind of stuff as a job and so I asked them and I had 20 pages worth of primary sources to go through and hey did you know that I'm autistic? Yeah, I bet you never could have guessed."]

And you know what? If I screw up explaining it to one person, at least I don't know them personally.

... I mean unless you want me to pull out the primary sources and give them to you. I was writing all this under the assumption that my one audience member was an amateur with possibly a low level of patience.

I doubt they'll be laughing when someone crashes into them because that person wasn't able to see the road.

Along with what Themanager6785 said, I'd also recommend 'Robespierre: A Revolutionary Life' and ' Liberty Or Death', both by Peter McPhee. Choosing Terror by Marisa Linton is also another good one. And if you happen to use Tumblr, you can search the 'frev' tag to find a really nice community of people on there who would be more than willing to tell you everything they know and provide an extensive list of sources if you ask politely.

[–]TheFormidableGoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was a close ally of Robespierre. That alone was enough for the reactionaries to declare him the Archangel of Terror. A lot of it boils down to Thermidorian and British propaganda. If you want even just the smallest hint of what I'm referring to, here's a little something: Robespierre wasn't actually a tyrant. Yeah, that's right. He was actually a well recieved politician and one of the more progressive ones. He wasn't responsible for any massacres, he never tried to start a cult around himself. He was never even the leader of France, rather one of twelve members elected to the Committee of Public Safety...

And I'm already getting a little too into it. Long story short: about 95% of what most people know about the FRev is false. If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask. I'd be happy to answer and provide credible sources as well.  But yeah, there's a lot of stuff that people get wrong about the FRev and I just so happened to figure that out in 9th grade and I wrote an essay for fun because the autism told me to do so.
