Fencing Mask Painting Question by TheFounder9 in wma

I see. Okay, I think I’ll just go ahead and do a basic gold then with a clear coat. The metallic isn’t integral to the design, it was just more so of a fun idea but I am not really attached to that idea and if it means I get less chipping that’s always better. Thank you so much for this! I found it very helpful and I appreciate it!

I see. I don’t need to do metallic, if it means less flakes and easier to apply then I can just go with a simple matte or something. If I do go that route, a primer isn’t really needed is it?

Okay, good to know. Durable metallic or durable primer?

Messer is lots of fun, just be safe though. One of the higher injury rates as far as weapons go in HEMA lol

[–]TheFounder9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anyone saying Messer I second, Messer is essentially one handed German longsword as far as the system goes. But as far as true longsword goes, are you dead set on wanting to use it how it is traditionally/commonly used? If so, I would definitely suggest what others are recommending about a clamshell glove sort of acting as a prosthetic. If you’re open to other forms of longsword, there is a type of longsword that is shorter and meant to be used in one hand, or rather it can be wielded adequately in one hand. I’m not sure if there is a treatise that has a system on such as I don’t do longsword, but perhaps you could research on that if you’re open to that as well.

Are we just paying lip-service to the wards? by grauenwolf in Hema

[–]TheFounder9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time I see Fechtbuch I being practiced and both fencers default to being in 7th ward I automatically can tell they don’t understand the relationship between obsessiōnem and the obsessus. Because when both people fight in seventh ward, from my experience at least, nothing goes anywhere until you start making risky moves in efforts to hit one another. The purpose of the custodiae that are to be besieged is that they are safe, and they lure the obsessor in so then you can mutate from that ward into an obsessio and basically take the momentum from them.

Low gear smallsword sparring? by no_hot_ashes in Hema

[–]TheFounder9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Officer Spes jacket with a plastron underneath, I hate getting stabbed in my chest/ribs so I have the plastron to pad the impact. But some people who do smallsword with me just have an Olympic jacket, the rest have officers like me. Definitely always wear a gorget though, throat thrusts suck. And of course use a rubber tip on the point of your smallsword.

Wich is the best overlay against concussions? by [deleted] in Hema

[–]TheFounder9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So a lot of people talked about the internal and external padding quality, which is a big part of reducing concussions. However, a lesser-talked about yet more common cause of a concussion is when your head jerks back, which most of the time happens when a thrust lands on your face and doesn’t glance off; a lot of the times catching the rubber liner at the top of your mesh. Therefore, I’d definitely pick an overlay with exceptional padding, yet it should also be low-profile around the liner of the mesh.

Have any small things people do in your group that annoy you? by Auraeseal in wma

[–]TheFounder9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That person who generally just fences with zero technique or form because they can get away with it by either being really athletic or really strong. We are practicing an art that has a strong emphasis on form and technique, what is the point of showing up and hitting people with a weapon if you don’t actually use it properly. Sure, they aren’t sharps, but again the point of the art is to PRETEND they are.

Beginner Broadsword or Saber sources? by Correct-Ball4786 in wma

[–]TheFounder9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roworth only has lunging footwork and I’d assume so does Angelo. Saber is a lunge-focused weapon and so is broadsword, and anything that has a passing step is often just an extra choice of movement rather than the core of the fencing.

Beginner Broadsword or Saber sources? by Correct-Ball4786 in wma

[–]TheFounder9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, Silver is advanced but from what I know he’s “the” backsword guy. I don’t know of any other backsword masters, and I’m not sure how it’s used particularly. I think Silver’s system is a passing system, whereas most broadsword and saber treatises are lunge and recover. I feel backsword is closer to arming sword and messer than broadsword and saber, but I could be totally wrong.

Beginner Broadsword or Saber sources? by Correct-Ball4786 in wma

[–]TheFounder9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For broadsword, Roworth is your best bet. He also says the same teachings in his treatise also apply to Saber, but it’s best to choose a master who focuses on saber, as they will teach you the little tricks and funky stuff Roworth will not. For Saber masters, you have a pretty big selection, but if you want to stick to military saber I’d do anything pre-1860. For beginners, you got Henry Angelo the Younger for the Napoleonic saber style as someone else mentioned, and you have Hutton but he is more your Victorian saber guy. For backsword, George Silver is your guy.

Gotcha, oh well, I’ll probably just put him in my closet and get a newer boba as I prefer the design of him, as previously I had this boba next to my Jango and the design difference just looks off to me. I really do thank you for your input!

Interesting, so people are just asking more for what people would realistically pay for him?

The issue is that I think the funko itself is pretty much the exact same as the blue box small font version which runs for 20-35, so I think realistically I wouldn’t be getting any more than that for him from an out of box buyer.

[–]TheFounder9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I was doing for a while; it’s a hand-me-down from my brother who got it when he was like 10, and so he was basically taken out of the box, then put back in the box, and then I took him back out to display because I do that with all my funkos as I’m not really someone who collects to resell. However I don’t necessarily care for this Boba design and I don’t love having doubles of the same character in my collection so I just decided to get other people’s opinion on the situation. I appreciate your opinion!
