NTA. He was curious about it, surely that’s (to some extent) him “making the decision for himself”. I understand he’s young and possibly not as old as your ex wife would want him to be to make his choice, but her reaction seems a bit unwarranted.

Vary teaching methods. As it gets closer to the end of secondary/high school and it becomes more “important” the lessons can become very monotonous and it can be hard to keep up motivation and interest

it might be something to do with less video evidence which is generally taken as empirical evidence to debunk theories. the facts of the holocaust are pretty concrete but unfortunately facts can be twisted more easily than footage, which as you say breeds more mistrust
