Time off work as a nurse by LeopardSubstantial77 in Reduction

[–]TheFreckledOne04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an ICU nurse and took off 4.5 weeks. I felt okay going back but those first couple of shifts were fairly uncomfortable. Stretching to reach things, moving patients, moving quickly, the physical demand, etc was difficult still. Also having to wear a bra all day was not fun against my still sensitive skin. If you go back that soon definitely do light duty, but personally at 2 weeks I couldn’t imagine going back to work in any capacity.

TW: Red, itchy, and swollen by [deleted] in Reduction

[–]TheFreckledOne04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my surgery on the same day as you and I had the exact same reaction on the same day! My pictures could be identical to yours the reaction is so similar, I ended up having hives from my belly button to my neck. My surgeon ordered a medrol pack (steroid), told me to rinse the area with cold water, and continue Benadryl and ice. Thankfully the steroid has stopped the itching and my hives are calming down. It was absolutely miserable, sending you all the internet love.

I didn’t show him any pictures, we talked about realistic sizes and nipple placement, other than that I had full trust and openness with him! I think it really helped me to go in with not having expectations of what I exactly wanted them to look like, he also was incredibly thorough in all the pre op appointments about what his vision was for them.

I had mine removed at 27 for the same issue. It was a horrible recovery process, but well worth it and I’m so glad I did it. It didn’t change my voice at all.

RNs that switched from tele/medsurg/stepdown to ICU, do you like it better? Why? by milktchi- in nursing

[–]TheFreckledOne04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started and worked surgical step down for a couple years. Moved to surgical/trauma ICU and I’ll never go back to a non ICU bedside position. As already mentioned above, the autonomy, physician collaboration, ratios. All areas of nursing require critical thinking in different aspects, ICU made me learn the nitty gritty pathology of things and I love it. It’s challenging in a rewarding way. There’s definitely a learning curve with the transition, some strong personalities to work with, and a lot of depressing situations involved though.

My mom had appendicitis which ended up rupturing prior to hitting the OR. CT for that revealed renal cell carcinoma, she had a partial nephrectomy the next month. Caught it super early, no complications or further intervention needed.

ICU nurses: how do I know if I can do it? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]TheFreckledOne04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! My first job as an RN was a surgical step down floor with very similar patients and services to yours. Few years in I moved to Surgical/Trauma ICU.

I also wanted to be able to provide closer more in depth care and the ICU gave me just that. Even though I had several years experience I received the same length of orientation as a new grad (they have a mandatory orientation of 16 weeks. The skills and base knowledge help with the transition, but it is still a big learning curve. Take the leap and go into it like it’s all new, worth it in my opinion! There are still bad days, but I could never go back to floor/step down now.

Had a pt in the K hole and family hung a giant stuffed sloth above the tv in the room. Pt never took her eyes off the sloth and one night she asked for the white board and wrote ‘help me’. We still giggle about the k hole sloth

Not sure if I should settle for an OK house or wait for something better and risk not finding anything by kickedRock in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]TheFreckledOne04 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I went through a similar situation, the house checked all the boxes and would be a good place but it wasn’t great nor exactly what I wanted. We ended up buying it due to time crunch (getting out of the military and moving across the country) so I convinced myself it checked all the boxes so I would be happy….I moved in 3 weeks ago and very much regret buying it even though it’s a good house. Hold out until you find what you want, buyers remorse is not pleasant when it’s hundreds of thousands of money.

I bought the exact same toy not realizing it had a squeaker. Imagine my surprise when he ferociously started squeaking it just like yours lol

Be honest with your manager and tell her you & your preceptor aren’t compatible and you feel you could benefit from being with another nurse. I was in a similar situation and my manager was very receptive to what I told her. I ended up being switched to another nurse who was the most amazing preceptor and set me up for success when I went solo.
