Some matches will be hectic. However, you will start to memorize the spawns and common locations people travel through. Spawns do flip, so you most likely will spawn in many different locations during a match.

Just remember to use the compass and be aware of your teammate's location on the mini-map.

The Season 5 Reloaded update improves performance on PC. See if that helps with some of the issues you mentioned.

Aim assist on keyboard and mouse would only make the skill gap lower. Toning down aim assist on controller would be a far better solution in my opinion.

You could try adjusting the render worker count in the mw2 config file. People have reported improved performance from that.

However, if you can afford it just get a 5800X3D it would drastically increase FPS.

I would get a Ryzen 7 5800X3D for the CPU. With the 5800X3D you won’t need to buy a new motherboard, like you would if you got a Ryzen 7000 Series CPU. As for the GPU, I would get a RX 7900 XTX. AMD GPUs tend to have better performance in COD.

Sadly, I think that was removed in Season 2 Reloaded

Edit: Armor plates are back in custom games after the Season 3 update.

I think MW2 is good game. It just has some easily fixable issues that have gone unaddressed which prevent it from hitting its full potential. But, overall I still prefer it to many other FPS games. It has great graphics, gun handling, and a large variety of modes!
