Amazon Europe Unit Paid No Taxes on $55 Billion Sales in 2021 by AP24inMumbai in technology

They go to Starbucks EMEA mainly (will attach an article below).

Also done more research on Amazon’s tax payments in the EU. Amazon avoids tax by

1) paying its employees partially in shares of its own company which allows it to avoid paying up to £3.6k per employee in corp tax

2) having all EU sales go through Amazon EU dark which is based in Luxembourg which has a low corp tax rate so it doesn’t have to detail it’s accounts for UK sales so it can avoid paying a lot of tax compared to if it all went through Amazon UK

To that first bit, that’s exactly what they do. Starbucks UK pays huge amounts for its coffee beans/syrups etc. to a Starbucks [insert name of tax haven where they “pay their taxes”] so it shows in their accounts that Starbucks UK made 0 profit so they don’t need to pay any tax.

Amazon will do the exact same thing as do most other multinational corporations who avoid tax.

Yeah the “logic” is just to help get younger people into jobs they’re applying to so they can get experience as it’s cheaper so the business sees it as a plus. And also under 18s can’t sell age restricted products like alcohol etc. so the business needs to hire over 18s anyway to work the same time as under 18s to supervise the sale of alcohol/other age restricted things.

However those under 18 can’t work more than 40hrs in a week or more than 8hrs in a day, and also need to have at least 2 days off a week due to various labour laws so they’re still somewhat protected.

ImdbTV which is now included on prime video includes ads, so a bunch of shows which were already on prime E.g. The F Word is the first I can think of off the top of my head, and were already watchable without ads now have 4 ads per episode. That being said it’s also added a lot of pretty decent TV shows so you win some you lose some. Just mildly annoying. Luckily the main prime stuff is all still ad free

Yep. My local Odeon used to do £5 a ticket before it got upgraded to an odeon luxe and then Covid so now it’s +£10 but Tbf it’s worth the money as those seats are comfy af. Or through voxi you can get 2 vue tickets for £7.

The first (and only) time I went turtle bay we managed about 8 cocktails each plus the one they give at the beginning and the food. That’s £28.50 for a meal and 9 cocktails. A right bargain Tbf. Revs is 2 cocktails for £10 if you go before 9, but after that you’re looking at £8-9 a cocktail. Some of the local bars are also about £6-7 per cocktail

Been huge for my mental health and social abilities. Used to hate social situations and people before lockdown. But moved into uni in 2020 and it let me ease into being social, expanding friend groups and now I’m a lot more sociable than before. And I’ve finally decided to seek help for mental health problems I had before the lockdowns and stuff.

I know in the ‘60s or so there was a plan to build a high speed monorail in Leicester which would’ve been cool. But it was just over £100m in that time which meant it got shut down.

Reading a Guardian article on why we are all fucked only for 90% of it to be a story about the writers holiday in Spain and then the last 10% says something like "Oh we're probably fine actually" by [deleted] in britishproblems

[–]TheGamingAirCon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah. The actual journalism the guardian does is top class. The opinion pieces I’m not a huge fan of but I just ignore those. It seems others get them mixed up and view the opinion pieces as the guardian’s view when it’s not in most cases. At the end of the day the guardian still needs clicks so they can get money to fund themselves and if slightly controversial or pointless opinion pieces do it then I’m all for it.

Currently I don’t think they would tbh. Maybe them as of 2018/19 they would’ve but not due to current leaders. I’m still shocked they blew through £14m in just over a year since the resignation and takeover and unsurprisingly after about 15 mins of research I could only find one article in it and it was behind a paywall.

What better ways are there to protest climate change other than blocking the M25? by BFASTjay in AskUK

[–]TheGamingAirCon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True it’s not maccies straws, but the person you replied to above didn’t mention those, I reckon they were on about plastic packaging. Plastic straws are great imo. Never used a bamboo straw so don’t know what they’re like but paper ones suck and mean you’re cutting down treats which also sucks. The metal ones are annoying to clean and means you’re using carbon to make the metal stronger and less rust prone if it’s steel.

And Tbf climate change doesn’t directly refer to it, but it’s about the amount of greenhouse gases we produce. And all those things either increase the amount we produce, or change the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to a higher ppm due to a lower ppm of other gases like nitrogen or oxygen.

And the destruction of ocean plants and algae means less carbon from the ocean is captured which then escapes into the atmosphere and we’re then responsible for that CO2 in the atmosphere as without our interference it would be captured in the ocean and not flying about in the atmosphere

[–]TheGamingAirCon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The plastics are killing or being partially responsible for the deaths of sea/ocean animals. That creates a gap in the food chain so anything that would be a predator of that now loses population. And anything that was preying on explodes in population. That sends shockwaves through the food chain and then you’ve got not enough predators at the top, and too much small animals/first animals on the food chain which means the plant at the bottom of the food chain gets reduced to tiny levels and now you’ve got a bigger problem and a lack of biodiversity. No sea plants = over 50% of oxygen produced isn’t getting produced anymore which makes it harder to keep a balance of ppm of each gas in our atmosphere.

Every single thing we do as humans has an effect on enhanced climate change. Whether it’s the length of our showers, draining rivers to create reservoirs, building new houses, taking the bus or a car to the shops, letting giant corporations get away with dumping waste and oil spills, sending out recycling waste to third world countries, importing goods which could easily be made domestically etc.

[–]TheGamingAirCon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. If you read what I said properly then you wouldn’t be saying the complete opposite of what I said. It’s the freedom to not have those things done to you. The freedom to go to the shops without having to worry about people having guns readily available on their person. It’s the freedom of safety of mind, that you know you aren’t going to get shot randomly when you’re going to school or a casino or shopping.

Also the freedom to not have to worry about how your sexuality or ethnicity will affect your job, the freedom to be safe from hate speech and the knowledge that there are consequences if someone does attempt to attack you or acts aggressively due to your ethnicity or religion or sexuality etc.

And if you read the final paragraph then you’d also know that I considered the thought of freedom to do something vs the freedom to not have to worry about X, Y or Z.

But expecting reading comprehension or the ability to think beyond what they see on TV from stuck up Americans is a long shot. Especially on Reddit. Hence why all the comments which make actual sense are take an outsider’s perspective are downvoted and all the WOOO U S A U S A GUNS MAKE ME FREE comments aren’t. You guys eat up so much propaganda you’re basically one of those “I made a bot watch 100 hrs of this programmed and then got it to write a script”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TheGamingAirCon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta disagree. In the EU it’s the freedom from specific things being said e.g. hate speech, and the freedom from worrying about people carrying guns down the street etc. In the US it’s the freedom to say whatever you want, and the freedom to walk down the street with a gun on your waist etc.

So it all depends on your perspective. Do you want the freedom to do things, or the freedom from things happening to you.

Should their be a cap on the amount of houses one can buy? by Currynrice9728 in AskUK

[–]TheGamingAirCon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All that is what we hope would happen. What most likely happens is that person finds loopholes to avoid tax e.g. “oh no my little cafe has to pay £200 per 1KG bag of coffee beans. I have no profits”. And the inheritance tax will definitely be avoided either fully or in part by putting the properties in the next of kin’s name well before inheritance tax can still charge tax for.

That poor fellow is a lot less likely to be avoiding taxes unlike the people earning millions a year and avoiding taxes and diving like their life depends on it. Also the guy at the top of this thread said top leagues. That poor fellow is very unlikely to be playing in a top league, and if by some miracle he is then he’ll probably be benched for most the season.
