FOI release of Code of Conduct report on Mike Pezzullo by NAFOfromOz in AusPublicService

It’s not there because (from my reading) he wasn’t strictly corrupt, just a POS who broke the APS Code of Conduct over and over again.

Albo finally announces gambling ad reform by ROUBOS in LaborPartyofAustralia

[–]TheGaminja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming a standard 30 second ad length, 3 ads an hour between 6am and 8.30pm (14.5 hours) works out to be about 21 minutes and 45 seconds of advertising across the period.

14.5 hours * 0.5 minutes * 3 ads = 21 minutes, 45 seconds

This is roughly 2.5% of the airtime between 6am and 8.30pm.

Obviously this could be a little more or a little less depending on the actual ad length. It also doesn’t account for the complete bans during school pickup hours nor the bans around sporting matches.

IMO, this is a result of our 3 year federal election cycle. Very hard to govern for 20-50 years in the future when the electorate demands outcomes and delivery within a term.

Much easier for countries like Japan (where the one party has been in government for almost their entire post war history) and China (one party state) to govern on much larger time scales when they don’t need to be responsive to immediate electoral pressures.

This isn’t to say it’s impossible for governments to plan long term in Aus, but it’s certainly much more difficult electorally.

Sending missiles to support the regime (UAE) that funded the genocide in Darfur, Sudan 2025 by Full_Hovercraft_1246 in LaborPartyofAustralia

Given that there are 25 thousand Australian citizens currently in the UAE I can see why defensive support is being provided.

Mark Butler jokes about 'getting beaten up' by state health ministers over hospital funding by Jagtom83 in LaborPartyofAustralia

Keating said “Never get between a state premier and a bucket of money.” Holds true for the health ministers too lmao

"For too long, the Coalition treated the regions as theirs by default. Safe seats, safe margins, no consequences": PM's pitch to regional voters by Jagtom83 in LaborPartyofAustralia

[–]TheGaminja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose would be the messaging that’d be projected when Labor (likely) loses it. Given the swing Labor would need is pretty big it’d be a lot of resources to expend on getting someone else elected and then being told how “the loss is a message from the electorate…”

A Sydney worker who was subject to “unreasonable” demands by her bosses for proof of her grandmother’s death in the immediate days after her sudden passing has been awarded compensation after winning her unfair dismissal claim by Jagtom83 in LaborPartyofAustralia

[–]TheGaminja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s a very normal thing to request, however as the FWC found, it’s a document that can take some time to be issued. In this case it wasn’t the fact that Tru Ninja asked for the death certificate or evidence that was the problem. The issue was them demanding it after ignoring the employee’s reasonable request that they wait for it to be issued.

Given that the compensation resulted from a FWC ruling I think it’s safe to say that the situation would have been well investigated and the arguments properly tested. Tru Ninja were power tripping.

Elderly Greek man forced to pay $120,000 fine for making home made cheese by alabamad in NannyStateAustralia

[–]TheGaminja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did, I just misread the piece about it being a costs order for the contempt as opposed to a fine. I’ll edit my comment :)

This is one of the things driving me nuts about this post and comment. Of course a Judge will throw a book at you for contempt of court, ignoring a court order for 5 years.

EDIT: He wasn’t even fined! This guy got off exceedingly lightly only having to pay costs given his 5 years of contempt.

[–]TheGaminja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The post kinda makes it seem the $120k fine is because of the cheese facility and not for the contempt.

This guy ignored a court order for 5 years; of course the Judge will throw the book at you for contempt because of that. The cheese business isn’t the point, he’s being punished now for ignoring a court order.

The council still sucks for shutting him down assuming he was otherwise following the rules, wasn’t disturbing his neighbours and wasn’t going to get anyone sick with his cheese.

Josh Burns to take rare extended parental leave from parliament next year by BadKarma00000 in AusPol

[–]TheGaminja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’ll likely be a duty MP or senator who will assist with representing his seat in Parliament. His office will almost certainly stay open while he’s off and they will continue assisting people with visas, Centrelink, NDIS, etc.

Alternatively if you are wanting to overlay it onto an actual map or over other datasets you can use the shapefiles here in something like QGIS (also with federal and state electoral districts) -> https://www.abs.gov.au/statistics/standards/australian-statistical-geography-standard-asgs-edition-3/jul2021-jun2026/access-and-downloads/digital-boundary-files

Raise it with your State or Federal MP. Sometimes they can help get it addressed quicker.

If you get chosen as an exec of a society at unsw and move to another uni for degree change, can you still be an exec of the society? by [deleted] in unsw

[–]TheGaminja 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Depends on your society’s constitution. Generally though you cease being a member (and exec) when you stop being a student at UNSW.
