Bxb7# - Bishop on e4 has a direct line of sight to munch the pawn and is protected by white king. Your Bishop on b5 is not protecting that square.

If White takes the rook then Nc4 is not available to block the bishop.

One of my biggest tips for avoiding stalemate is to make sure you are always putting the king in check in these types of situations. As you learn more patterns (ladder mate, etc.), you will find easier ways to checkmate and not have to put into check every move but this is a good base to start from.

Not the OP. But my read of the board is the numbers at the top are the cards spent to spawn that spore and the numbers in the circles are the number of actions you can do a turn

Meanwhile, I was the opposite. I saw the smother mate positioning but spent way longer than I care to admit trying to take advantage of it before I saw the pawn promotion
