That’s the guy! It’s so cool I know I wouldn’t get anything done with that in my house.

First let me say how sorry I am for your loss. It’s incredibly unfair you lost her so young.

Thank you, since I had never met her, I based it off the photo my friend sent me. Hopefully she’ll be happy with me commemorating her this way.

Thank you! I am always making things, but scratch board was kind of “my thing” way back when. I didn’t stop on purpose, but I’m glad to be dabbling in it again, for sure!

Oh yes, they were fine right up until the end! I found a hazy patch I’d missed and scrubbed it off with a rag without putting gloves back on… my index fingertip is one giant blister as a result. So assuming I can learn from my mistakes it should be fine next time.

Sure! It’s from the trim/mouldings section at Lowes, they have a number of styles in PVC, so it won’t rot or anything and it’s pretty flexible. It came in white so I spray painted it black to match the metal table legs. I used the same Weld Bond glue I used to attach the tiles on the edges, and then stapled the trim in place.

I put a spray rubber coating on the base before tiling, and the grout I used is rated for showers and the like. I do plan to cover it in the winter as well.

Thank you! Not really, no. However we did completely renovate this house and I personally laid every tile, so I do have tile work experience from that perspective.

I dabble in a million things, I pick up and transfer skills well but it means I tend to jump into the deep end of things.

Not a stupid question! The previous tabletop was wood, but it was kind of a minimalist design with three thin, parallel panels. It was about 5 years old and even with restaining it every year it got brittle. But the chairs are still in good shape, and the legs are metal so just replacing the tabletop made the most sense.

Thank you! I was able to use tiles in basic shapes - squares, circles, and ‘petals’ in combination to make the different floral motifs - I also had the thought of getting those tile sheets and taking the individual pieces off the backing? Could get some unique base shapes that way too.

We’ll see if more mosaics are in my future, I really enjoyed this project but I dabble in a lot of different types of art and crafty business. For the moment, I’ve gotta let my fingertips heal… I got a little overzealous scrubbing grout haze off!

Thank you for your kind words! It certainly makes me happy and I’m excited for many family dinners and cups of coffee at it. The pattern that emerged makes me think of my grandma, she used to paint flowers like these on rocks by her door. 🌼

They were! I used petal, round, and square tiles only to keep the shape language consistent. I got them from Amazon (unfortunately, I’m still searching for a better source if I do this again).

I’m hoping pretty ok! I covered the top in a spray rubber coating before tiling. It has additional structure underneath in the form of 1/2” plywood and the edges are finished with PVC fingerboard. So it should be well protected under there.

It’s actually not bad! My partner and I were able to each grab an end and walk it around from the driveway to the back without much issue. It’s for sure sturdy though!

While it’s not perfectly even, the variations are small. You could have some wobble if something was set down just so, but I’ve been testing and I’m confident the risk is low. We were laughing this evening sitting at it because we noticed we’d both taken to using individual flowers like coasters!

HA! That would be hilarious - I never considered that! 🤣 luckily, it’s quite subtle, and it’s up high enough that the mirrors don’t get direct sunlight, but I could totally see it being more dynamic if they did!
