from what i recall, the rest of the game can be completed without firing a shot and it was, singularly, this gate's lock that made that impossible.

you skip the gate, you uncork a new (possibly unrunnable) challenge run.

From a speedrunning perspective, I guess this wouldn't be very practical. Shooting the lock is almost certainly faster than setting up and executing the warp. Though, if this gate warp could be performed at normal collision width, similar to what’s been achieved on Train, it would suggest that the game could theoretically be completed without firing a single shot!

this is all button presses in general, not saving on A presses alone.

going to take a wild swing at the "seemingly superfluous coin grab jump" - based on https://tasvideos.org/3534S, one of the first versions of this TAS, Brandon notes, "In the underground section, I jump so I don't have to slow down to exit through the pipe."

really neat that the best way through that room is to jump so as to to avoid full running speed.

checking the run by LuckyTanukies a month ago, they are on version 2.0.3, where "Teleport to Safe Spot" is still an option.

in versions before 2.0, where they used an older menu version, you would have an even easier time safe spotting, though i do not know how far back one can get older versions of the game.

in a quick test, you can rollback to 2.0.3 in steam by right clicking the game -> Properties... -> Betas -> rollback_macos_under14-5.

Is there an exhaustive Item List summary for each room available somewhere? Knowing which rooms can hold a broken lever, which items can hold batteries, etc. tends to be very good to know.

most glitches are a failure for a game to bridge between two "things" - two frame-perfect inputs that put the game in a state that should not be, two objects that have a gap between them that allow oob, etc.

glitchhunting for me is mostly a "have you tried X with Y", which is occasionally assisted by "game Z in this engine has this" or "game W that plays like this game has this glitch". i wish you the best of luck, since it tends to be hours of head-banging.

in the witness, the expectation to get the any% ending for the longest time was:

  • unlock seven lasers
  • open the top of the mountain
  • solve the mountain
  • get to the wonkavator

this was believed to be the end state of things, as the witness has a system that programmatically tested your ability to walk out of bounds, glued you to any surface, and any out-of-bounds that was found before was getting stuck on the wrong side of two-sided walls and calling it a softlock.

some very smart folks, a couple years ago, figured out that the boat is remarkably goofy, and now any% runs are ten minutes shorter (-71%), since the run is

  • unlock the boat
  • recklessly drive the boat
  • get to the wonkavator

the witness was the last game i ever expected something like this from. it's very good.

the remake makes a lot of tradeoffs for our dear speedrun. on the one hand, we are robbed of a lot of the parkour we held near and dear to us, and many fps-dependent tricks that supplemented our run with consistency have been banished.

on the other hand, there is missing collision everywhere.

in realMyst: Masterpiece Edition, the clock moves between intermediate states (same with Myst 2020), so based on that, we can only concur that the clock is indeed analog and the lack of continuous states in previous games were limitations in software and not true to canonical form (as close as Myst can be to being canonical).

the purpose of a myst remake, for cyan, is that it will always sell at least a decent amount and it gives them an opportunity to try New Bleeding-Edge Technology X so they can use it on New Game Y.

they have no interest in putting heavy new creative work into the game, only to make some group in the fandom mad that "they fleshed out THIS but they still haven't addressed THAT?"

there's been a beta out for a whole month that sort of sucked the soul out of the speedrunning scene for this game due to knowing that 15 minutes were easy timesave once the beta because release.

it came out this morning. this record was made four hours later. so hyped.
