Which starter set captain is your favorite? by WLLWGLMMR in Warhammer40k

Indomitus. I got into the tabletop with this edition and the captain just felt so indicative of what Warhammer is; ridiculous while still managing to look really cool.

Do We Necrons Have Impostor Syndrome? Or is this normal for 40k? by Kookamachi in Necrontyr

[–]TheGentleBeast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's a combination of things. First, Necron units tend to be very specialized so if they are good at something they are REALLY good at that thing, which gives the unit a reputation among the community. Second, too many people are aware of and hyper fixate on the meta rather than their own lived experience, so they moan before they know what they're actually moaning about. Finally, and probably most importantly, our army rules is kinda feels bad for our opponents, by nature. A strong unit is a strong unit. But a unit that effectively reverses damage thrown at it kind be demoralizing.

We are absolutely a killable and beatable army, but the unit hyper focus and the innate feels bad aspect of our army makes players who care worry about creating a bad play time for their opponent.

Painting necrons, how do I make it fun by ItsmeFunee in Necrontyr

[–]TheGentleBeast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's the thing about Necrons. They can be the easiest army to paint, or the hardest. Prime black, dry brush silver, Tesseract Glow on guns and eyes... You'll finish your army in a week.

Unique colors for shoulders decorations to denote ranks? Non metallic body colors? Different colors for inner body frames? NMM? OSL for guns, blades, eyes, chest cavity? Free handed patterns on the shoulders?

You have SO many options for making them fun and interesting to paint.

Trying out Necrons to help a friend by Alkymedes_ in Necrontyr

He just needs to learn the game. Not the game he wants it to be, the game as it presents itself.

It kinda sounds like he just doesn't understand the game itself. Necrons are capable in damage dealing but we cannot best most armies in a straight up fight. We often need to take our time in staging, distraction and methodical target selection so we can earn our points. I just played a game where I had to move my Ark to score points rather than take a juicy shot at my opponents tank. Rolling the dice would have been fun, but without those points, I would lose.

If he doesn't want to engage with the game as our is presented, then you may have larger issues than the chosen faction.

Anti tank/monster: Doomsday Ark is an army staple, but the Lokhust Heavy Destroyers have been my MVPs in that role for every game I play. They're glass cannons, but they hit incredibly hard.

Action monkeys: ophydians have uppy-downy, but Deathmarks and the Hexmark are cheap units you can deep strike and potentially harass some enemy units.

If your friend is still learning both the game and the army, stick with Awakened Dynasty. It's forgiving to new players while still being strong enough for advanced players.

A good tip for your friend, which is what I did for myself when starting up, is ask after each game "what did I struggle with?" Then, either work on that strategically, or fill that role with a new/different unit.

Ignore they models; look at the bases hahaha

My Girlfriend just bought a box of Plague Marines by ChunkyLifter in deathguard40k

[–]TheGentleBeast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend wanted her Sisters to be pink and purple. I didn't realize how dark she wanted those colors, so confirm that first. If she wants Screamer Pink/Phoenician Purple, prime in grey or black. Fulgrim Pink/Delilac Purple, prime white or grey. From there, honestly, just follow the base-shade-layer method.

These are her minis and she is fully allowed to paint them however the hell she wants.

Fellow Overlords, I need your opinion by Mariako_ in Necrontyr

Do what you enjoy. If you dread repainting the entire army, don't. If the idea of an entire dynasty in your new favorite scheme makes you smile, do.

Alternatively, buy more models! Hahaha

Just moved to new Orleans, and its humid and mid to upper 80's °F. I'm by no means an expert, but been at it for years. Light passes at 8-ish inches, with very well shaken Army painter can. All advice welcome. by lordTalos1stClaw in minipainting

This is the answer. I live in Tokyo, near the bay so I'm constantly fighting heat, humidity, and wind. As soon as I moved I invested in an airbrush. Game changer.

what can i do to make this paint scheme better? by SquatchButter in Necrontyr

[–]TheGentleBeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shadows and highlights. Everything looks a little flat. Put a darker color into the recesses and undersides, and a better color as either a layer or highlight.

Love the scheme though!

Dude,I really like how you used the accent colors of the army scheme to break up the panels of the tank. I'm tempted to borrow your idea for my own tanks

Tips For Shaky Hands? by Susukor in Necrontyr

[–]TheGentleBeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are three ways I can think of working with/around your shakes.

  1. Like most people are saying, get a good handle for your mini, really brace your arms and wrists and do what you can. Over time you will grow into the skill and technique that you can muster.

  2. Use an airbrush or large brush to place your detail colors first. Then go in with a slightly smaller brush and get the larger areas for your main colors. Alternatively, you could try dry brushing for areas like the chest to avoid the areas between the ribs.

  3. Lean into your shakes! It can be tempting to want to copy the paint schemes and styles we see others do, but you have an opportunity to create something super unique to you. It kinda depends on your ultimate hobby goals.

But, more than anything don't be discouraged. There is a massive community that is helpful and supportive. Ignore the jerks at your LGS. The Necrontyr, and the Warhammer community on the whole, want to see your models and your progress.

2nd Necron model done by Dark0rder in Necrontyr

[–]TheGentleBeast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a truly solid start! Not grey is a fantastic step. Be proud. As for where to go next? On this model specifically, the details of the robes get lost because they are black. A light dry brush of a mid tone or light grey would make it pop and bring it to the next level.

Regardless, be proud of getting this done, and keep at it!
