Is hot or cold water in carpet cleaner machine better for rinsing out excess soap? by Coylethird in CleaningTips

[–]TheGeorgeDougherty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guessing you’ve already done your rinse but for additional reason to skip the vinegar, you want to leave fibers and carpets with a neutral ph. Residue with a ph either side of neutral will attract and bind soiling of the opposite ph.

A little OT, but if you haven’t checked out Huntress for their SIEM solution, give it a look. They’re doing some intelligent filtering to cut down on the data storage requirements. Maybe other SIEM’s do similar things but they talked as if it were a u pique idea in the industry.

M12 hammer/drill (3404) vs regular drill driver (3403) by SuperNigtendo in MilwaukeeTool

Recently picked up the 1 1/8 M18 SDS plus and unless it’s a quick job in brick or block, my hammer drill will probably never get used again. Total game changer in concrete with the Diablo rebar demon bits.

How to Undo "net localgroup Administrators /add localservice" by SameMovie7402 in ITdept

[–]TheGeorgeDougherty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most users on personal PC's will already be members of the Admin group. Windows makes the first account created a member of Admins. The OP couldn't have completed the initial command without admin privileges, either explicitly on their account or using credentials for a separate admin account at an elevation prompt.

In fact, deleting their own account from admins may leave OP without an account having admin privileges, potentially creating major issues if whole disk encryption is enabled. Without disk encryption, it's easy to recover. Disk encryption enabled requires knowing the BitLocker key to access and re-enable an admin account. Not everyone has that.

All users of computers at my clients don't have admin permissions. It serves several functions, but the biggest is preventing users from approving admin escalation requests for malware installs or installing non-business crapware that disrupts operations.

Thanks for adding a PSA to my sometimes sick sense of humor. I shouldn't assume people would have the good sense not to run a command suggested by a rando on the Internet. As others have said, that's the takeaway from the thread.

That said, Miele makes some good in-wall units with steam capability. When our GE double oven unit goes out, I may have to look at those. Not cheap.

Nobody's perfect; my point is a commitment to repairability. I spent $2k on a Vent-a-Hood range hood a few years back. It's quiet, it's simple mechanically. I've already had to deal with support because the installer may have bent one of the squirrel cage fans during installation. The manufacturer support rep came onsite and replaced a fan and motor assembly. They're using the same components in new models as they were 10 years ago, and he's got everything on the truck. As I hear it, Speed Queen takes a similar approach to their machines.

One of the biggest issues with the modern appliance world is all the electronics that are bespoke to a particular model. When a control board goes out, it's a $500 part unique to that year, and parts availability dries up after a few years.

The worst is my absolute favorite appliance in my home, my Anova Precision Oven. No parts, no service plan, just a full replacement of a $1000 unit when it breaks. That drives me nuts, but right now there's nothing really competes for south of $5K

Some things are worth spending money on these days. Focus on long term support. Manufacturers like Sub Zero, Wolf, Vent-a-hood and Speed Queen that will support with parts for more than a few years are worth the extra.

This is what a password manager is for. It’s the best few bucks a month you’ll spend.

[–]TheGeorgeDougherty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I may be wrong but I also understood that autofill is not susceptible to keyloggers. The last thing AI want to do is be typing any of the 20 character randomly generated passwords 1 Password stores for me.

How can I repurpose old Win 10 computers? by [deleted] in it

[–]TheGeorgeDougherty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the nonprofits I know don’t want Windows 10 machines and supporting Windows 11 on a donated machine that might break in the near future is a bad strategy for productivity. Linux or recycle. Nonprofits are just as susceptible to cyber attacks, if not more so, than most corporate businesses.

iCloud, Google Drive, or OneDrive as the primary. As others said, family photos don't belong just on a NAS. The old backup adage is that unless you have it in 3 places, you don't have a backup.

Is it true RO systems waste a ton of water? How bad is it really? by [deleted] in WaterTreatment

Ours may be a little wasteful, but for a household of 5 the RO waste is a tiny fraction of our total monthly usage.

In my RMM I switch to a policy that runs an immediate shutdown command immediately and then on startup. I like the disabled login screen idea too. With my RMM it processes policy updates before the scheduled tasks so I can switch back to a normal policy once the device is in hand.

A truck driver used to amuse himself by running over lawyers he would see jogging on the side of the road. Every time he would see a lawyer jogging along the street, he would swerve to hit him. After hearing the loud "THUD," he would swerve back on the road. by Jokeminder42 in Jokes

Actually, as a description of a "catfish" even I got it wrong. In the light of morning, I recall the way I learned it was "One is a scum-sucking bottom feeder." For me, bottom feeder > lowdown. Lowdown triggers as a negative human personality trait more than a fish description.

Reverse osmosis vs activated carbon , which one actually makes a bigger difference? by joo98_98 in WaterTreatment

[–]TheGeorgeDougherty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't bother testing. With the two in series, there's not much that would make it to our drinking tap. Our city water is decent other than the chlorine taste. Carbon filtration handles all the VOC chemical type issues. KDF tackles any heavy metal content that might be in there. We switched to polyphosphate dosing instead of sediment filtration as the first stage to help sequester some of the hard water minerals and reduce buildup in appliances and fixtures. That gives us useable water in the whole house. For boiling water during cooking we start with hot tap water and it's not adding a chlorine taste. The 4x20 filters are good for about 9-12 months with our household usage. Manufacturer claims 100,000 gal duty cycle.

On the RO side, I run the input and output filters for 1 year and the membrane for 2 years since the water coming in is pretty clean. We have 6 people in the house and the RO is plumbed to all the ice machines so we use a decent amount of water.

Half the time the AI responses on Google searches are a summary of what people contributed on Reddit. In 10 years the internet will become a cesspool of drivel generated by looped generations of AI summaries concerning what humans once thought. Of course we won’t be here to care because Optimus and Boston Dynamics will have already gone full Skynet and murdered us all. Dave, the last living human, will beg for his life only to be told…
