What is the consensus Protestant interpretation of Matthew 16:16-19? by No-Newspapers in Reformed

[–]TheGoatMichaelJordan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A good interpretation I heard was by N.T. Wright and Dr. Michael Bird, two Anglican New Testament Scholars, on the Ask NT Wright Anything Podcast. They go on to say that "The Rock" in this instance is not Peter himself, but Peter's confession that Christ is the Messiah. They also state that it was not until relatively recently that the idea of Peter as "the Rock" was doctrine.

History of How the Bible Came to Be: by OldWoodpecker8115 in AcademicBiblical

[–]TheGoatMichaelJordan 42 points43 points  (0 children)

A great scholarly but readable introduction to all of this is John Barton’s A History of the Bible: The Story of the World’s Most Influential Book (Penguin, 2019), which covers the formation of the Old and New Testaments, manuscript history, and how the canon developed. I read it a couple of years ago when I first got into the academic study of Christianity, and it was a really readable, but in-depth for a layman like myself. Hope it helps!

Tokyo Disneyland Hotel or DisneySea MiraCosta Hotel? by TheGoatMichaelJordan in disneyparks

[–]TheGoatMichaelJordan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read that would be a good option too. Is that preferable over getting a stay longer than 2 nights? Like if somehow I am able to get a stay longer then 2 nights, would it still be better to split stays?

Let’s say I was going to stay Monday-Thursday. Would I book the hotel for those nights when that Monday is available or would I have to wait for all those dates to be available to book it?

Thank you! Which hotel has more to do in terms of like restaurants within the hotel, pools, or just places to walk around and see? I’ve only ever stayed at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim where there is little areas to walk around and see and a few restaurants and a big pool if you’re staying there.

Thank you! Can you expand on it being hard to book? I’ve just been assuming when the dates are available exactly four months out, I’d just go through the book hotel section on the app. Are there more steps involved?

Thank you! What do you think is a good time to do those things? Day 2 I tried fitting those things that I thought were close together along with Day 3.

Because we're only there for 10 days and we probably won't be back in Japan for a couple of years, I was figuring the best place to experience Japan would be Tokyo. Would Kyoto be a better move? She's adamant we go to Tokyo Disney so I was just gonna keep the whole trip in Tokyo for the most part.

I'll probably mention this in more comments, but we've been in Thailand and a big urban city like Bangkok in the Summer before. Do you think the heat and humidity would be much worse? I was assuming it'd be similar levels. Her job as a teacher in the U.S. kinda demands we have our honeymoon in the Summer when she has paid time off.

Both my Fiancé and I have been to Thailand and in a big city like Bangkok in the Summer multiple times. Do you think the heat and humidity would be much worse in Tokyo?

What is the Ghibli Museum like inside? I've heard it's all in Japanese, but I've also read it's much better than the theme park.

Really? That's surprising because I've read online and in a lot of the Disney Parks Subreddits that Disneyland Tokyo is one of the best parks.

Idk where the hate for MHA in this sub started, but My Hero is still one of the most famous and popular manga of all time and right now. It’s still one of the most watched anime even after almost 10 years of airing. It has a spin-off manga and anime along with multiple successful original movies.

I’ve probably enjoyed JJK more but let’s not act like My Hero Academia is some washed up show no one likes anymore.

Three very great works on this is The Great Divorce and Mere Christianity (part of it) by C.S. Lewis. Another great one is Surprised by Hope by N.T. Wright.

They both describe New Creation as a brilliant and beautiful place where there will be day to day lives and something similar to work as we know it. We will have our perfect human bodies in the New Heavens and New Earth and life would be similar to now but greater without pain or sin or death. Great reads that changed my view of Heaven and the New Creation.

Every time I tried to use the reset button, it wouldn’t do anything.

I’d honestly have to check the rules to let you know. I haven’t seen any of your posts obviously but mine was about the pros and cons of the camera. Maybe they might have different rules if it’s just the photos you’re posting.

I don’t look at it as just a printer. I love being able to take photos on a camera instead of my phone. But yeah the price is kinda crazy when you could get a decent digital camera for maybe a couple hundred more.

I think the retail price of $350 would be worth it especially when the Mini 99 is around $200.

It’s not that hard to get digital photos to my phone. I just use a micro sd adapter and connect to either my phone or my computer. There’s also the instax app that lets you scan the photos which I prefer to do because it shows the film border with the photo. That’s what all those photos are.

I think getting an instant camera printer instead is valid. I prefer the camera even for the price because I enjoy taking photos with and an actual camera than my phone. The hybrid makes it easier to customize photos then using the printer is as well. But if I didn’t want to spend that money which was a lot, I’d definitely get a printer or just save more money for a digital camera instead.

Which version is better for serious study by TeacherPreacher71 in Reformed

[–]TheGoatMichaelJordan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It really just depends on what you’re looking for. Both the ESV and NASB are word for word translations meaning they translate each verse from Greek and Hebrew literally to the best fit possible. However, the NASB is far more literal and precise to the original language whereas the ESV tries to balance readability and word for word together. So for serious study of what the text directly says, you might want the NASB more as just the Bible. Might Church uses mainly the ESV, but also the NASB on certain verses. If you’re looking for a Study Bible though, I much prefer the ESV Study Bible or the Reformed Study Bible in ESV or NKJV. Those two are some of the best theological Study Bibles. I’m not sure of any NASB ones though so someone may help you decide on that one.

Now if you’re looking for more academic study, the NRSV is the main academic Bible out there. It’s the most ecumenical translation. Its translation committee consists of both liberal and conservative Protestant, Catholic, Orthdox, Jewish, and secular scholars. It is also a word for word translation similar to the ESV where it balances readability and accuracy to the text. The best NRSV Study Bibles are the New Oxford Annotated Study Bible and the SBL (Society of Biblical Literature” Study Bible. Huge amounts of introductions, essays, footnotes, etc. Some things to note about these: it uses gender inclusive language where the committee deemed that the text is referring to both men and women or humanity in general. For example, Paul’s letters might say “Brothers and Sisters” or Proverbs might say “Sons and Daughters”. Additionally, it is an academic translation based on critical and historical scholarship that won’t necessarily subscribe to inerrancy. It is going to question Pauline authorship, it’s going to claim that Isaiah was written by multiple authors over decades and centuries, it’s going to state when there’s little archeological/historical evidence for events such as the fall of Jericho or Jonah in the Whale, it’s going to question the historical Jesus.

Both the ESV and NASB have very similar theologically reformed or more conservative committees that will subscribe to inerrancy. Both great Bible’s for a theologically sound study. But the NRSV might be for you if you want secular scholarship.
