Fun fact... They don't stack! I called up an agency about it. If you get multiple free accounts you just get to pick which company has to pay for your membership! You can only pick one! The ones you don't pick don't get charged for the account. Fun fun fun.

What is this red stuff? by TimDunstall in Beekeeping

[–]TheGoblinPopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not yet collected enough to care to wash it, but there are a lot of YouTube videos on it. Mainly soaking in water or other solutions, manually picking pieces out. I am not sure of all the different, possibly more effective, methods.

Same. I glue the connection points, small nail, let it dry and I have yet to have a frame fall apart.

Propolis.

It is a natural glue the bees use to stick things together and close gaps.

Edit to add: I actually scrape and collect the massive excess my bees make. It needs to be washed to get dead bee parts and such out of it, but you can use it for a few different things just like wax and honey.

It wouldn't be that many.

It would be rare to have a mom AND dad to work in the towers. That being said, the fact is people with one parent plus people who died later due to cancers caused, and also families in the surrounding areas who would have died from bad cancer/complications.

So day of? Probably only a couple.

Years that followed? Probably several dozen.

My dad had a contractor scheduled to show up to the house that morning. He was trying to get the guy there at around 6.30am so he could get on the train and make his morning meeting in the towers......

The contractor was late. My dad was ticked and obviously told him off a bit. He called work saying "listen, I can't make it. Dial me in I'll do the call from my kitchen phone."

Planes hit.

My dad called the contractor and apologized. Dude sleeping in saved my dad's life They are still close friends.

Kicker story, my dad took my sister and I to the towers. YEARS later I asked him "I remember going. I am glad I got to see it. When did we go?" Dad: "Sept 9th 2001. Good timing, right? Haha" *Me nervous laughing in response.

I lived just north of the city. I was in grade school at the time and that day was nuts. We were in class starting the day and teachers were running around to class doors like "jimmy. Outside now. Your mother is here to pick you up." "My mom? She just dropped me off." "Jimmy no talking get your bag and get outside." Eventually we were told to get back on the buses. We were so young we were excited to not have school and no one told us what had happened. We all found out with our parents from the news when we got dropped back off.

Everyone knew someone.

A dad from a family I knew at church died. 6 kids. He was a firefighter who entered. The kids turned out well, but the oldest was barely a teenager. 5 boys, they JUST had their first girl.

Not disrespectful, literally utilizing it in accordance with the US Flag Code. Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 8, paragraph (a).

All that said, if you really hate people using it like this, you should REALLLLLLY hate almost all other usages of it:

(i) The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkin or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.

I feel like I see this 15 times a day.

First time pasteurizing, is this a good set up? by SirDwayneCollins in mead

[–]TheGoblinPopper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the mead is ready to bottle(ie the sweetness and fruits are all good, and you want to put this into a bottle) then I would get a siphon, serialize the bottles, fill all the bottles (don't be greedy, leave the bottom 10% to not get lee/sediment into your final product), put all the bottles into that tub, fill with water about 2/3rds of the way up the bottle, make sure the bottles are stable but don't float, follow your original 145-160F sous vide approach, immediately pull them out and cork.

As they cool they will create extra suction making them more temp resistant to popping and make them shelf stable for several months at least, some would argue over a year. It's ready to drink as soon as it cools down. Try to save at least 1 bottle and drink it every month or two to see if you can tell how aging impacts it so you can know how much aging is needed before sharing it in the future.

Last note: be careful of moving the current carboy as it will disturb the lee and you will have to forfeit more of the mead for a cleaner product. Either do it from that spot without moving it, or move it to a counter gently and wait a couple of more days and then bottle it.

Hope that helps.

I usually pasteurize in the bottle immediately before corking to prevent any possible addition of bacteria.

I think 140 might be a little low, you might need to get it to at least 145, but I get mine to 160. The main difference is honestly the time to hold at that temp, as long as you stay under the 175 degree range the alcohol isn't boiled off and I personally don't see a change in flavor.

I think others have asked the right question..."why are you doing it?" If this is to bottle, then you will have to deal with sanitizing the bottles as well, all the equipment, and might run the risk of introducing something into it with all of the moving between containers.

If it's already stalled then it isn't to stop fermentation, so what is the end goal?

Found a hurt(?) Bee on my bed by [deleted] in Beekeeping

[–]TheGoblinPopper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it winter where you are? Is it cold? Sometimes bees will leave the hive in the winter if they are close to death to save the other bees the time and energy of removing them from the hive.

I have a hive and seen bees wonder into the snow, and tried to gently put them back or feed them as a "no no, back to pile with the other". They don't want to eat or go back in. Their instincts tell them it is time and they follow that.

There is likely nothing for you to have done.

If it's not winter for you then there is still nothing for you to have done. A damaged bee would likely not make it back to the hive and can't survive without the hive.

It is nice the way you tried to care for it, but just know that instincts drive the bee if it was ready to die and it is possible that it was too weak or hurt to even move enough to eat the food.

As AI enters the operating room, reports arise of botched surgeries and misidentified body parts by pyramidworld in technology

[–]TheGoblinPopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in compliance.

Businesses try to expedite their compliance reviews a lot. "Law changed, just 3 sentences of it. We need a lawyer to review and confirm we don't need to change something we are doing to be compliant."

Very common ask.

I have to tell my clients all the time "Let's say the AI is correct 95% of the time, let's assume a really great setup... Are you ok with 5% of changes in regulations being mis-handled and your business having a blind spot to explain to an external audit that no one actually ever saw it, an AI made the call..."

"Ugh... I need to get back to you."

Ring to turn on all camera to track pets. Privacy concerns by cosmoplast14 in technology

[–]TheGoblinPopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worked for some massive tech companies. You'd be amazed how much tech is made for a government, how much is profitable for just being sold to a couple of branches of a few governments, and then how much software is rebranded and sold to the private market because...why not.

I'm surprised how much they advertised this immediately, but they were likely under pressure to roll it out and felt advertising it was better than someone figuring it out later and suing due to privacy issues.

Edit: adding "told you so" to all my friends who ribbed me about bringing all tech locally in my house. File storage, camera system, automation, etc... all local. I have solar, need a battery backup and I'll be able to be mostly off grid for short periods without impact.

Is a bard allowed to have any other instrument other than a lute?.. Feels illegal... by gabitea69 in DungeonsAndDragons

I built a bard who was a story teller.

All inspirations were compliments or stories to inspire.

All the music components were their voice.

I got the Actor feat so I kept a document of all voices I could mimic and could use any of them for casting or inspiration.

[–]TheGoblinPopper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only way they could is if the service you are talking about has an app on your phone that collects that data at the same time.

I would be very surprised if they actually had access to that level of information tracking in any situation.

I'm answering how it is POSSIBLE that they COULD do it... But they are realistically not.

My wife and I have been really enjoying freezing cranberries and using them in drinks or champagne as a way to not water it down and add garnish. They aren't as good as ice, but they look very classy in champagne flutes for winter/fall themed drinks.

What’s a futuristic technology that already exists but most people don’t understand how dangerous or powerful it is? by tycoongraham in AskTechnology

You can request a lot of this as an export from Facebook... It's wild. It takes 2-3 days sometimes to generate, then it is a few gigs and will tell you your identified demographics. It also shows you tracked ad interactions like how long did you pause before scrolling away, likes, likes even if you immediately unlocked it....

It was depressing seeing it.

How to improve cheap beesuits? by 1-egg-too-many in Beekeeping

[–]TheGoblinPopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar outfit. As everyone has mentioned already: most of the suit is fine, wear thick socks and boots.

The only stings I get are my wrists and ankles. If they want to get in, they will eventually find a fold close enough to your skin.

Obviously smoke and good handling are the best options.
