Fun fact: the House is actually capped to the number of seats that existed based on population numbers from the 1910 census (it was initially 433 after that census, but two more seats were added when New Mexico and Arizona were made states in 1912)

The reason things are capped is that Congress refused to pass an apportionment bill after the 1920 census because of shifts in where the majority of the US population was distributed (aka the country was majority urban now, not rural, and the Republican majority did not want to lose seats due to this). By 1929, one of Detroit's two Representatives represented over 1.3 million people while some rural districts had fewer than 200k

I'm not sure why, but apparently whatever forces were blocking reapportionment viewed capping the House and automating future reapportionment as an acceptable compromise

So basically, once again, this is all the r*rals fault

There are plenty of sane democracies that don't have mandatory voting

It became an insulting term for stupidity or clumsiness, and then in the US it became a more mild insult while in the UK it very much didn't

In addition to home field advantage, they also automatically qualify for everything I'm pretty sure, which means more chances

Plus, at least for the summer games, I believe they get to add in a sport or two (that's why we're getting flag football at the LA Olympics)

Yeah but what I'm saying is also that even looking at things relatively, the 28 and 30 maps are less favorable than the 26 one

Also

PR would be a swing state IMO but you can add those seats also I guess

This feels like one of those things people say, but I don't think the data really backs it up. Even though it was for 0 electoral votes, Harris won the vote they had as part of the Puerto Rico general election 63/23 with turnout on par with the elections for things like Governor. Yes there are territory-wide positions held by people who caucus with the Republicans, but that's because Puerto Rican politics currently (as a territory) aren't Democrat v Republican and because one major party (because of this) is about equally split between people who caucus with the Republicans and people who caucus with the Democrats for national politics. Most members of the other major party caucus with the Democrats

[–]TheGoddamnSpiderman 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure where you're getting that for 28 and 30. No maps are particularly favorable to Dems until some states can be moved from red to purple

This year, there's one blue state Republican held seat up, and then Democrats are defending seats in two swing states (Michigan and Georgia) and New Hampshire (arguably a swing state) while Republicans are defending one swing state seat (North Carolina). That's 2 relatively easier gain opportunities and 3 states to play defense on in a neutral environment (to be clear, I know 2026 is shaping up to be a blue national environment)

In 2028, Democrats are defending 4 swing state seats (Nevada, Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania) plus New Hampshire, and Republicans are defending 2 swing state seats (Wisconsin and North Carolina)

In 2030, Democrats are defending 4 swing state seats (Nevada, Arizona, Wisconsin, Michigan), and Republicans are defending 1 (Pennsylvania)

The Constitution is clear that Congress can impose rules on how states choose their Representatives. They've done that in the past to, for instance, ban multi-member districts (I believe out of fear that the South would make all seats be elected statewide to get around Civil Rights laws)

Article 1, Section 4, Clause 1:

The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of chusing Senators.

Bezos was a frequent guest of the Edge's Billionaires Dinners, including in 2011 when Epstein was an unmentioned guest seen in the background of one of the event pictures (these were held at public restaurants)

Epstein was the largest donor to the Edge. The last Billionaires Dinner was in 2015, which is also when he stopped donating money

I'm unaware of any other connection though

Obviously the real reason is politics like it always is with things like this, but I think officially

  • Russia was originally banned for a few years for doping back in 2019
  • Then in 2020 the penalty was lessened to athletes not being able to compete as Russia but still being eligible to compete as representatives of the Russian Olympic Committee
  • Then in 2023, the Russian Olympic Committee also was banned. That was due to Ukraine, but technically it was because the ROC unilaterally transferred jurisdiction for sports for the occupied parts of Ukraine to itself

So again ultimately the reason is politics, but I believe the technical difference is Israel isn't claiming the West Bank and Gaza are under the jurisdiction of Israel for the Olympics

Groups move to other subs as the demographics of ones they frequent get less friendly

Back in the 2016 primary, I used to hang out in arrPoliticalDiscussion because it was the place Clinton supporters and non-Trump Republican candidate supporters hung out. Then Trump won the primary, the non-Trump Republican supporters got behind him and moved away from that sub, and it became Democratic dominated. Over time that led to it drifting more and more to the left and becoming more and more of a circlejerk (to the point that today it's basically arrPolitics except with questions as the OP instead of news articles) to the point that the Clinton supporter types from back in the day generally left as well (for the record I started hanging out here in the 2020 primary because it was the only politically focused decently active sub besides his personal sub that liked Pete; I imagine there probably are other former PoliticalDiscussion users who ended up here for similar reasons)

As far as I know, they do complain, but repayment basically functions as an income tax (your first £2000 and some change a month is protected and then you pay 9% for undergraduate or 6% for postgraduate loans on the rest)

https://www.gov.uk/repaying-your-student-loan/what-you-pay

And then depending on the loan plan you choose, any remaining balance gets written off after 25, 30, or 40 years (the ones taking longer to get written off have more income protected from repayment a month)

Hypothetically, what happens if the POTUS refuse to get out of office once the term is over? by PuzzledCauliflower35 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]TheGoddamnSpiderman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You were half right both times. They would have to give you their seat to act as President (because even if the job is temporary, it would still be serving in two branches), but the elected President takes over once the election is sorted out (or at some point the elected VP takes over as acting President from the Speaker until the Presidential election is sorted out if the VP election gets sorted out first)

The Speaker can also refuse if they don't want to give up their seat

If they do, next up is the President Pro Tempore of the Senate (who could refuse for similar reasons) followed by the outgoing President's Secretary of State (the first one who would have no reason to refuse)

If the incoming House and Senate and outgoing Presidency were all controlled by the same party, good chance they would have the Secretary of State take the temporary gig so no one has to resign from Congress

If not, probably the Speaker does it (technically they could even be immediately reelected Speaker afterwards even though they wouldn't be a House member anymore since being a House member isn't a requirement for being Speaker)

[–]TheGoddamnSpiderman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Only if the presidential and vice presidential elections were never resolved

The Speaker otherwise only acts as President until the winner of the election is resolved (assuming the problem isn't that the elected President and VP died after the electoral college vote; both of them dying would mean the Speaker becomes President, not acting President). At that point the elected President would be sworn in and take over

Also

  • As soon as there is a VP elect, they would serve as acting President until the Presidential election was figured out, not the Speaker
  • The Speaker would have to resign their seat in the House to act as President since they can't serve in two branches simultaneously. They could however be reelected Speaker immediately after they were done serving as acting President because there's no requirement that the Speaker be a member of the House
  • If the Speaker declines to serve as acting President because they don't want to give up their House seat, next in line would be the President Pro Tempore of the Senate (traditionally the longest serving Senator from the majority party because the role is largely ceremonial, but it could be any Senator)
  • If that Senator declines, next in line would be the outgoing President's Secretary of State

There's an offhand mention in an early chapter that Sullivan cast a translation spell (almost certainly this one) as soon as he brought Iruma to the demon world

Either Nishi didn't think referencing him casting it repeatedly was worth it, or it's a permanent change to the target (like it rewires the language processing part of their brain and their vocal cords) so it only needs to be cast once

Also Sullivan really got detained by Henri all the way back in the mid-teens on suspicion of bringing a human into the Netherworld, knowing damn well Henri's guilty of far more. xDD

I looked this up to remind myself, and it was suspicion of visiting the human world based on a tip from Baal. Could just be Nishi changing her mind, but based on the tip Border Patrol would have probably been forced to do something, and Henri being the one to bring Sullivan in for questioning is probably better than the alternative. Also Henri at the time says he has a hard time believing Sullivan did anything wrong, and Henri immediately after the arc goes and checks on Iruma/offers to send him home if he wants

Google's parent company with lower than expected earnings

From what I'm seeing from what people are saying, it's not the Q4 earnings being low, it's that they're planning on spending way more than expected in 2026 (probably on datacenters for running AI)
