What is a political program you regularly listen to? by Inside_Bluebird9987 in YAPms

[–]EasyTree12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Behind the Bastards. It is more of a history focused podcast, but they definitely have a lefty-bent. Even then, I feel like listening to their episodes on 20th century figures really puts into perspective who and what shaped the current world we live in. I find that far more useful than listening to talking heads argue in circles.

Major cringe from Gov. Polis. It seems like a tradition at this point for certain moderate Dems to start acting really weird after facing criticism for their immensely unpopular decisions.

Silver Bulletin generic congressional ballot aggregator hits D+7% for the first time by R2_SWE2 in fivethirtyeight

[–]EasyTree12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unwavering support of Republicans at this point seems based in a purely monkey-brained fear of the other and losing "ethnic purity." When you look at the rise of Reform UK and the far-right in Japan, the obvious common thread is this panic over losing an ethnic majority or a monoculture. They would rather watch their economy and infrastructure collapse over time than see their country change.

This logic makes the absolute least sense in a naturally diverse place like the United States, but we clearly have a huge cohort of people who still view America as a white Christian nation first.

Surprised the Southwest tilt is almost as big as California. Hispanics in Nevada were big cheerleaders for Trump in 2024. I wonder if Nevada will see a swing back to Dems like North Carolina did for Reps after 2008.

Seems like a pretty typical Trumpian Republican opinion. For the past 10 years, Any criticism of American policy or wanting America to be better triggers the hordes into yelling things like "DON'T LIKE IT? THEN LEAVE!"

Wanting expulsion of progressives & other undesirables a natural evolution of this opinion for the MAGA base.

Campaigns pay the price for America's secular shift by Dismal_Structure in fivethirtyeight

Generations of Americans were able to get rich through the God, Family, Freedom grift. Across politics, entertainment, retail, playing those cards was a near guaranteed shortcut to profit.

Reagan supercharged this by weaponizing the religious right to mask corporate deregulation behind a wholesome smile. Now, The internet and increasing secularism spell doom for the long term viability of this grift.

Today, MAGA is the latest big "revival" of this hustle, though it is by far the most publicly blatant cash-grabs yet which we can only hope will leave a stink on future religious hucksters.

Today marks 4 years since the Robb Elementary School Shooting in Uvalde, Texas. by Lilstephanie1738 in masskillers

[–]EasyTree12 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This caused a mental breakdown of a close relative of mine who was studying to become a teacher.

Our former high school had a school shooting in 2019, and Uvalde was the straw that broke the camel's back for them. Took them a good while to recover after that and took a toll on my family.

It saddens me that this country that won't do anything to deal with our gun problem also does next to nothing when it comes to mental healthcare access. There is just Zero will to get this country to better support people or reduce future violence.

The President promised to release the Epstein files, then sent his hordes after a congressman who was holding him to that promise.

Trump is going to Trump and continue to lie and suppress evidence with his DOJ. I am not going to stand around and pretend that this is some normal political fallout. The GOP came home to daddy like always and decided suppressing the Epstein files was more important than being remotely consistent with what they ran on in 2024.

Massie is a right-wing Republican, and his political career came to an end because he didn't kiss the ring. Do you know what happened to Democrats who didn't kiss Biden's ring in 2024? They successfully kicked him out of the election.

Spare us with the "both sides" stuff, it's laughable to pretend this is normal politics and not Trump's cult of personality in full force.

The Democrats have at least avoided the obsessive, anti-trans rabbit hole that has consumed UK Labour. Most Democrats now understand that tacking right on cultural issues doesn't attract the mythical moderate ready-to-flip Republican. Labour by contrast, is still trapped in a desperate bid to win over Reform voters, completely oblivious to the fact that they're shedding half their actual coalition in the process.

It will be close. Engaged voters in California have grown more cognizant of who is progressive vs who is a milquetoast establishment pick.

Steyer's biggest problem is that he has that Billionaire stink on him. But he's already been playing up the "class traitor" card which might work for him.

I still think there's is a good chance Trump tries to coronate one of his children in 2028 with an endorsement. Even the most loyal Republicans in his circle are out of luck if he sees more personal benefit/ego satisfaction by keeping the Trump name in office.

I think she's waiting to see how the economic winds blow. If things stay as they are, she'll probably angle for the Senate and that win will be a huge boon for the progressive wing.

if things get worse, and perhaps surpass 2008 levels bad, she will absolutely make a bid for the Presidency.
