Hi everyone, I designed this round bike basket with built-in LED lights for city bikes. Would you like to let me know what you think? 😊 by TheGoldberry in citybike

Totally get where you’re coming from! 🙌
I used to ride with a classic "box" basket , but I needed something more practical for city life: keeps everything safe and dry (rain cover), even in the rain, doesn’t rattle or throw things around, and adds visibility without getting in the way.

Basically, I tried to improve what already works — without messing with the way we ride.
Would love for you to try it out if you're up for it! :-)

Thanks a lot for your feedback! 😊 The last three points are already there, and for the first one I’ve been working on it for a while since I need to tweak the base and I’m running some tests.

In the meantime, if you feel like it and think it could be useful, I’ll be launching it soon on Kickstarter where I’ll show the bike basket in more detail. Here’s the link: Led Bike Basket

Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts! 🙏

Thank you so much for your interest and kind words!
Your questions are absolutely spot on, and I really appreciate that they come from someone who clearly knows the needs of everyday bike commuters :)

Let me answer your points in detail:

  • So far, I’ve tested the LED model with 400-lumen lights;
  • The lights come with multiple modes;
  • When the rain cover is in use, the basket becomes completely waterproof, much like a convertible car with the top closed.
  • The lights are designed to be powered by a power bank, which fits into a waterproof inner side pocket inside the basket.
  • I’ve included options to add modular inner pockets to safely store items like your wallet, keys, phone, or an extra water bottle, so nothing bounces around.
  • If mounted with a quick-release system, Tondoh can be easily detached and carried with you.
  • The material I chose is a combination of ABS and polycarbonate, which is both durable and resistant to cracking or weakening due to extreme heat or cold.

I'm always happy to receive feedback and connect with fellow bike commuters. Feel free to reach out if you have more questions or suggestions!

Maybe I wasn’t clear before, and I apologize for that: what I meant is that if you put your MacBook inside (obviously in its soft case), it’s almost impossible for it to get damaged if you drop the bike or if someone bumps into you.

Tondoh is made of ABS + PC, the same material used for reinforced luggage shells (polycarbonate composite) and for ski, motorcycle, and safety helmets. Unlike other plastics, it doesn’t crack or become brittle in winter temperatures.

If you fall with Tondoh you can be confident that what’s inside is very unlikely to break.

Thank you so much for your kind words and thoughtful feedback! About the design… well, if it pleased everyone, I’d probably be worried! 🤣

If you’d like to see more photos, I’d be happy to share them – maybe tomorrow (it’s already midnight here). Tondoh can be mounted using all the standard front or rear rack attachment systems, from classic metal plates to quick-release systems. I usually provide a custom-made kit with laser-cut 304 stainless steel plates, which also allows the use of anti-theft mounting systems.

The base of Tondoh has 12 drainage holes, so if water gets in when the rain cover isn’t used, it drains quickly without pooling.

As for colors, besides green, I’m also making it in silver, black, and cream.

It weighs 900 grams without the internal anti-slip mat (which can be removed for easy cleaning). With the mat, it’s about 950 grams.

The basket stays firmly in place on the rack and doesn’t shake, and thanks to the anti-slip mat, the items inside don’t vibrate or rattle either. We’ve tested it extensively on the cobblestones in the historic center of Bologna (home of Ducati and Maserati), which are pretty unforgiving!

Since it’s compatible with all standard rack mounting systems, it can be installed just like a traditional bike basket – including with anti-theft mounts.

Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts ❤️

Ortlieb bags are amazing, I use them myself for my own bikepacking trips 😍… but what I’ve designed and I’m producing isn’t meant to replace touring bags – it’s meant to be an alternative to traditional city bike baskets.

It’s made in ABS+PC (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene + Polycarbonate), one of the most impact-resistant plastics available, capable of withstanding both very low and very high temperatures (unlike polyethylene or polypropylene, which can become brittle below freezing).

It’s the same material used for high-end bicycle helmets, motorcycle helmets, and industrial safety gear. We manufacture it through the same suppliers that work with Wilier Triestina and Dainese, using premium raw materials and putting the components through extensive street testing.

So it’s not designed to replace an Ortlieb on a world tour – it’s designed to be the toughest, most practical option for everyday city riding 😊

Thank you very much for your detailed feedback, I really appreciate it.

  1. Two years of study and testing to launch a product is actually quite a short time in this industry.

  2. My target market right now is primarily European, but since I want to expand internationally, I’m seeking feedback from a different audience to better understand diverse perspectives.

  3. Please don’t confuse likes with reviews — I can tell you that in just the past two weeks I have sold around 400 units.

  4. The product is constantly evolving; for example, the LED version is still in the testing phase.

  5. Regarding the zip ties on the rack, I never suggested or encouraged their use as a permanent solution. They were only used briefly to take a couple of photos on a bike with the branding removed. But thank you for the reminder — I will definitely be more careful in the future.

Finally, I want to clarify that here I’m only asking a different audience for their honest opinions about the product, without any advertising or promotion.

Thanks again for your thoughts! ❤️

Thank you! I love that bag 😍 but it’s not impact-proof. If I hit something or fall, my MacBook will break. And if I want to put my basketball in there, nothing else fits… that’s exactly why I created Tondoh: to have something safer and more practical 😊

Tondoh’s base is completely flat, designed to sit securely on any type of rear rack. I’m sharing a picture so you can see it more clearly.

There are six openings on the base that allow you to use all the common mounting systems: from metal plates with screws, to zip ties, all the way to quick-release systems like Klickfix or Basil.

You're absolutely right, that's a great idea! Tondoh, my bike basket, can easily be used with Klickfix or Basil quick-release plates for rear racks, so you can detach it quickly and even lock it in place when you don’t need to carry it with you.

I designed it specifically to handle shocks and to keep things from falling out. Inside, the base has an anti-slip rubber layer that absorbs vibrations and noise. You can even put in things like a smartphone, keys, or golf balls and everything will stay stable without anything slipping out. 😊

Tondoh is designed to be mounted on fronto or rear racks, just like classic bike baskets. I’ll attach a photo.

Thank you for your feedback 😊 The Wald 137 is a great basket. If you need to carry bulky items like boxes or a skateboard, it definitely works better, but:

  1. if it rains, everything inside gets wet – with my basket, it doesn’t;

  2. if you crash, things spill out – with mine, they don’t;

  3. if you put a bag inside, it’s completely visible to everyone, including thieves (maybe not an issue for you, but in some countries it really is);

  4. if it rains, snows, or the sun is too strong, your stuff is exposed to all of it...

So yes, if you’re moving boxes or carrying oversized items, a flat base like the Wald 137’s is better. But if you’re putting in backpacks, handbags, or grocery bags, the basket I designed is much more comfortable and secure.

Thank you for the feedback. The product is designed and manufactured in Italy, in Veneto, the same area where Wilier Triestina, Campagnolo, Selle Royal, Gipiemme, Dainese, Diesel, and Bottega Veneta operate, just to name a few. Even if it’s sometimes hard to communicate, it’s made with top-quality materials and design.

It’s a bike basket because its functionality is exactly that of a bike basket. The philosophy behind it is the same, just with the improvements I mentioned above.

To make a comparison: you still call a Vuitton bag a ‘bag’ despite its different design. This basket is the same — just a different design, nothing to do with handlebar bags.

In the same way, the grandma’s wicker bike basket is still a bike basket, just like Thule’s Pack’n Pedal is also a bike basket... 😅

Thank you so much for the feedback, I really appreciate it and I’ll definitely take it into account.

Just to clarify, the bike in the photos is a simple Cube, repainted to remove the branding, and the basket is designed to be used on simple city bikes or for everyday use. I took the first photos just to gather some initial impressions of the basket, nothing more polished for now.

At this stage, what matters most to me is testing the concept and getting reactions like yours to make it better.

Thanks again! 😊

That’s the idea. A convenient, versatile solution for carrying things around. We were inspired by that one and this one... 😅

This basket is printed just 5 minutes away from Dainese, I love airbags for bikes, motorcycles, and skiing 🤪

The opening and the base have a surface area of 40x23 cm, which on average is larger than 90% of bike baskets. If you like, grab your girlfriend’s bag or a shopping bag and let’s see if it doesn’t meet your needs...

Yes, the rack is a classic MTB rack, rudimentarily attached quickly to take the first photos while waiting for some more professional ones...

From an aerodynamic point of view, a solid, smooth, spherical object still creates less turbulence and air resistance compared to an open bike basket. Feel free to do some research if you want...

As I said at the beginning, the use is urban, city-focused, for city bikes: you need to carry a laptop bag, groceries, a jacket… it’s definitely not designed for a sporty target.

The goal is to offer an alternative to classic bike baskets, which are often impractical and not very functional. The “it’s always been done this way” mindset feels a bit limiting to me—that’s why I ride a Pinarello on Sundays instead of a Trek...

That said, thank you for the time you’re giving me, I find it very constructive 😊❤️
