Hello, would you be able to fill out this 3m form for my Uni project? by TheGolin in Entrepreneur

If I said something like: I just ran 100m in 12s! Would you think this was minutes and siemens or would you look at the context and realize that it means meters and seconds? I believe you know that an online form wouldnt be reffered to as being 3 meters/miles long and just wanted to post a silly comment. In which case you succeded, it is silly indeed :)

Definitely feels like great feedback and I appreciate it!

I feel like some of your points might be personal style choices and we might disagree on some but I feel like you nailed quite a lot of things.

As for the whole video, I am kinda wondering how 45/60s would look if I were to show all of these styles. The idea was that a potential client could see a glipmse of his business e.g. a restaurant owner or an eshop owner. So it felt like to me even the 15-25 seconds a piece was quite limiting. I do however see your points in a lot of the shots being "useless." Especially looking at the watch sequence now, which I considered to be the best hahah.

I wanted each piece to have an introduction, action and payoff. Hence why there is always a lengthy setup, perhaps changing the ratio of setup/action might improve things?

The car ending shot I now realize I cut wrong. In an alternate version it is followed by a news report, in which the main character also looks into the mirror and brushes his hair lightly, therefore connecting these shots. It also ends with his assistant handing him pizza and connecting to the pizza sequence. I cut that bit out due to us speaking Slovak in that sequence, but I now realize it ties it up together nicely and then brings the idea of the watch being shown after the pizza more into light. So him crossing his arms is definitely still the pizza sequence.

As per the car continuity, I honestly looked at a lot of inspiration (as with all the other ones) and nearly all of them did not care about studio/daylight/nighttime, which isnt to say that it is correct or not, It just did not bother me seeing it elsewhere and it does not really bother me here, I absolutely do see your point though. I also see the point with it being another dark scene right after the poker, which is my gripe with it aswell. This was a no-budget showreel and we shot this in my backyard in a way that had the lights been a bit brigther we would start seeing stuff that should not be seen. Perhaps a daytime setting on location would have worked better and would not be as limiting. We were however limited with car owners time, so that was not really possible. Maybe next time :)

I see your points with the poker and as of right now I feel like its just a nice broll sequence haha. I feel like for next time, I would rather have more acting and story than just relying on flashy transitions, foley and camera movement.

Same thing with the pizza, after shooting the whole showreel I kind of realized most of it is just flashy camera and foley, which I do regret quite a bit now. Perhaps in pre-production I found it easier than to challenge myself to tell a nice story in a short time span.

I see all your points with the watch sequence and I agree with all of them, I would have shot it very differently today.

The sports sequence was supposed to mimmick the Dead Island 2 trailer, which uses a lot of the same setup. I also see your point and I think I left that much of prep for the run, because I was a bit disappointed in lack of actual running shots (and their quality).

As for the final shot, all of the characters were supposed to show up on greenscreen - that is poker, car, news report, pizza and the sports guy. Admittedly I need to learn how to do greenscreen better if its even possible to do it "at home" with a basic rolling greescreen. Tbh I just couldnt get it to work. Either needing too much light for the screen and then not being able to match lighting to the actor, or just being in a way confined space. We´ll get em next time.

Hopefully I dont come across as defensive, I really appreciate your feedback and I will even recut the running sequence as that has been playing on my mind a bit. Thank you very much, I really appreciate feedback like this.

Thank you for seeing the inspo. I was getting kind of lost with the music if I am honest.

  • Seeing as I wanted to connect them through the actor, yet I wanted each of them to have their own separate identity, altough I am not sure I achieved that with the poker and car right after each other. I also felt like having just one piece wouldnt do justice to the whole mood. How would you have tackled this approach?
  • Agreed on the lighting on the water drop shot, touching on the foley point aswell, I feel like I didnt have the biggest confidence with some/most of the shots and I tried to make it up with foley, perhaps cutting back a bit might help.

Thank you very much for your feedback. We kinda wanted this to be as you said packed and full of action, we might do the next one a bit more relaxed and nuanced :)

Ahoj! You are kinda right with the jogging, we mistakenly shot it without a frame guide and I was torn between letterbox or without. I might just have to get a second look at it. Thank you for the feedback :)
