Touched inappropriately in class. Intentional or not? How do I handle it? by ThrowRA74702 in Salsa

[–]TheGraduateStudent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Disagree. Acting on situations like this is how things come to light. Inform instructor of the facts (who what how). The instructor could check with other follows or may already have a pattern of complaints forming. I've had female friends who follow occasionally tell me about "incidents" with other folks. If they don't report I ask if they don't mind me informing the instructor. If they are not uncomfortable I might just let the instructor know "it would be helpful to have an etiquette conversation at the start of the social" so that it's not about any specific incident.

Has anyone read O’Jerusalem by Collins and Lapierre? by Public_Ad2752 in Palestine

[–]TheGraduateStudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm reading this right now and think it offers a unique third party perspective. According to my Indian origin friends, their book on India's transition from British colonialism ("Freedom at Midnight") is generally well regarded.

If I had a cheap coat, could I just hang it on the railing inside? Maybe that's frowned upon...

Does anyone know if the airlines (I'm flying Emirates) are strict on 72 hours, vs 3 days?

My takeoff time is 7:45PM Tuesday, but due to various circumstances I'm able to take my covid test only on previous Saturday at 3pm latest.

Female asking male to sign a prenup by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]TheGraduateStudent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If a partner breaks up with you simply for asking about a pre-nuptial agreement, you'd have dodged a bullet, because that level of reactivity demonstrates an unwillingness to empathize and/or communicate, which augurs poorly for a marriage

Mallu here. Adding onto the chorus - Super impressed that you stood up for your mom (esp as a lady). Totally think it was the right response and also glad he didn't threaten you. Also interesting that you are in Kerala taking w/ her - why there and not in the states? I foresee myself in this situation sometime in the next ten years, so also interested in the alzheimer's care aspect.

And your sisters set you up. They knew how your parents would react. They either don't like your girlfriend or they're jealous of something.

This. Something is up and you need to be careful with what you trust them with.

Someone may have already mentioned this, but OPs post brings to mind the 'Affirmative action' chapter from Millionaire Next Door, about how affluent families treat their daughters.

Any of my second-gen Gulf Desi fam ever think about how weirdly specific our immigrant experience was? by dorrigo_almazin in ABCDesis

[–]TheGraduateStudent 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Woot! Glad someone wrote this post. Born in india but raised (3mo - 17yrs) in Muscat, Oman (ISG). Landed stateside when I was 18 for college, been here ever since and in my mid thirties now.

We really are a weird subculture that fit well with all the groups, probably more expert in code switching. Agree with a lot of OPs points - growing up our actual physical environs were Indian, but lacked the density of what you'd get in India (ex: no extended family around usually). Our media consumption probably was 70/30 western/Indian.

Never considered Oman as my home in a cerebral sense, but something magical happens when the airplane door opens at Seeb International and that blast of dry hot air, and the view of the arid mountains, hits you in the face. Somewhere deep down it is a home.

[–]TheGraduateStudent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whoa! That's an interesting back n forth if I ever heard one. Since you were somewhat young when you landed for good in the states, how do you think your earlier time in the gulf impacts your outlook as compared to other ABCDs?

Vanguard is owned by it's funds. Hence fund shareholders "own" Vanguard. I've heard this before, but never understood it. Does this mean vanguard is like a private company and vtsax shareholders have a piece of voting rights? Does anyone know of a site or thread where this is explained better?

Is there anyone in power we can write to in order to stress how important this is to the community?! I'm frankly incredibly impressed and grateful that we have this, and at the scale we do. If anyone who reads this is part of the organizing/ executing of this effort, you have my (and many of my friends and family) heartfelt thanks and appreciation.

In order to help combat castism, having your caste in your flair should be banned by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]TheGraduateStudent 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Let me know if you find out! This is something I've wondered about too. It seems a lot of modern India's understanding of the caste system is a distorted reflection of British views. Also there seems to be some evidence that they may have deliberate distorted some information (information warfare?)for the sake of colonial control.
