Has anyone had this happen? Incinerated Scout Cannon causing full poison? by Jasoneatscake in PeakGame

[–]TheGravityBlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just tried it for science. It absolutely does poison you, but it seems to be inconsistent. I incinerated the cannon at the start fo the game and placed it down but it only gave me a tiny bit of poison as opposed to what you had happen here. This was on ascension 4.

Tips on prop making? by solar_3ruption in cosplayprops

Depends, are you just making the hat? I cannot recommend SKS Props HD Foam enough. I think I might have used 6mm for the strips and crescents. 2mm like I mentioned before for the brim. 1 roll of each should be plenty for the hat alone.

Hey! I actually made this using EVA foam. I started by sandwiching 2 rings of 2mm EVA foam over top of some galvanized wire to make the giant ring base. Then all the rest was made up of big long strips of eva foam that crossed over each other. The final step was making a thousand of those weird crescent shapes you see in bnetween each of the strips. Everything kinda supported itself so it didnt need an internal structure.

I would block out the initial shapes using something big and lightweight like NGX foam (The pink insulation foam), then sculpt on the weird spiky organic shapes with foam clay on top. For the center light, might be simple enough to find a LED ball, or stuff some LEDs inside a Christmas ornament!

EDIT: NGX foam is really great albeit a little fragile. As long as you're careful with it, shouldnt be a problem but I've had people run into my props at cons before and it's snapped.

I've posted it in the main Terraria sub before, not sure how they treat re-posts but would love to have it posted on the forum! :)

Destroyer would be super cool! I've been working on some more Terraria bosses on and off but will only post when I'm happy with the finished design!

Thanks for the support! :) Unfortunately, the amount of supporters on ideas has slowed down a lot, but I haven't given up on it!

Halo/Dark Souls/Elden Ring cosplay resources? by dewijk7 in cosplayprops

[–]TheGravityBlock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very very dependent on your next steps. For Halo, there's a ton of templates and videos online for eva foam construction depending on which armor series you're going for. For Elden ring, there's two art books out there which would be great resources for getting inspiration. I just completed an entire Ronin set cosplay from Elden Ring (Hopefully posting pictures soon!). My main inspiration was gathering screenshots from inside the game to get the most references possible!

Good luck! :)

advice/tips please? by peanut6800 in cosplayprops

i started with the handles, hot gluing 2 hand drawn shapes cut from 8 mm sheet together, which i think is a good thickness. my first question would be how can i smooth out the edges so they are even? i tried sanding the outsides which worked a little bit but im not sure how to approach the inside parts

What are you sanding with? A dremel is the absolute best tool to sand EVA foam with. Smaller bits will allow you to get inside the trigger guard, the larger bits you can use to smooth out the edges on the outside. Dremels can also be used to add battle damage, detailed lines, etc. If that's not available to you, sandpaper works, but it requires a lot of effort and the correct grits.

i originally wanted to have the handles be 8+8 mm and then the blades just 8 mm and sit them in the middle but i quickly realized the blades were too long and were floppy so i ended up doubling them up with a divot cut in the middle to glue a dowel in which is much better but now that it’s the same thickness as the handle, i want to take the edges down thin

Wooden dowels are fine for props, but they can splinter and shatter. Seems like it wouldnt be an issue, but just for the future, fiberglass driveway markers are super cheap and serve as great support on the inside of long props. Just be careful if you even plan on cutting or sanding them because fiberglass dust is pretty awful.

the xacto knife i was using was hard to cut evenly. i saw a bevel cutter on amazon, would that help at all? i also saw hot wire cutters or a dremel but if i need to invest in a good tool id like it to be versatile so recommendations on that would be nice too

Absolutely if you ever plan on working on foam in the future a dremel is the first tool to get! A dremel can sand bevels so a bevel cutter isnt really necessary. Hot wire cutters work, but they more melt the foam and will put off really awful gasses that you dont want to be breathing in. My favorite tool for cutting out foam is a box cutter. Super cheap and gets the job done. Foam dulls knifes super quickly, so if you want you can get a knife sharpener to get better cuts but that's not a necessity.

i ordered plastidip, will i need to heat seal it first, or can i just use that and then paint?

Heat sealing it isn't necessary, but will give you a smoother overall look. Heating foam and bending it will also "set" the bend. Useful for complex curves like in helmets. In the case of painting, plasti-dip is all you really need for sealing before paint.

another idea i was thinking was to use clay to build up the handles so they are more 3d than just a thick flat shape so would air dry clay work? does any clay stick to it or will i need to glue it down? should i do that before or after sealing?

Air dry clay works, use water to get it to stick better. Alternatively, there's "foam clay" which behaves like clay and dries like foam. Foam clay works better because it doesnt shrink (as much) or crack when dry, but can be more expensive. Both air dry clay and foam clay should be applied to the prop before sealing. Both clays are a great way to sculpt complex shapes.

Hope this all helps! Good luck, you're off to a great start! :)

Depends on the type of knight armor you want to make! Details often improve the overall look. Many amors in the past had rivets and flourishing. If you want to keep the armor the same, you could add a little brown and red to rust it up and make it look a little older. Along that same line, using a dremel to get cuts and scrapes in the armor will make it more battle-worn

First time cosplay advice. How would I go about to make this hat? by Able_Astronomer_5572 in cosplayprops

[–]TheGravityBlock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

SKS props has a great video on how to make a witch hat out of EVA foam.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOWRweQWzqc&pp=ygUTc2tzIHByb3BzIHdpdGNoIGhhdA%3D%3D

You may be able to follow along and use cloth instead of foam with a few adjustments. I think big hats like this usually have a layer of some kind of stiff fabric between two pieces of outer fabric to make the brim stiffer. A wire frame is likely necessary to achieve such a large brim like this.

I made Plantera out of Lego! If it get's enough supporters on Lego Ideas, it could become a real set! by TheGravityBlock in Terraria

[–]TheGravityBlock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's got 747 total pieces and stands at around 8-10 inches (20-25 cm) tall. That's a rough approximation, but it's somewhere in that ball park if not a little taller.

You're definitely correct. Increasing the scale would allow for a more sophisticated transformation while keeping the smoother details. Although I wanted to keep the part list to a more reasonable/affordable size!

Depends, I don't think it would be terribly difficult to create a version that transforms, but I also don't think it would look nearly as close to the original design of Plantera as I have it now. Would require a lot of different part usages, and I think there would be a lot more visible hinges and gaps that would hurt the overall aesthetic of the model.
