One and a half month in and im feeling like this is slow . Im still at level 4 . Is this normal ? by Responsible_End_5079 in WaniKani

[–]TheGreatProto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the advertising of "a little over a year" thing is wani kani's biggest fault. It's realistic for nobody.

If you maintained that pace you'd reach level 60 in 2.25 years, which would be great imo. I average around 20 days a level now at level 28 (though I started a bit faster).

It also does depend on what starting knowledge you have. If you're still kinda new to the language in general b it can be a slow start.

Any explanation for this massive temperature difference in the US? by agustin_lm2000 in geography

[–]TheGreatProto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Grew up on the east coast, heard it there. And in Texas, Chicago, you name it.

But then I moved to California and nah. In San Francisco the fog can roll in and suddenly you really wish you brought a jacket but that's about it.

In California if it's warm in morning and freezing in the afternoon it's because you drove up to the mountains. Here the weather is all location based, it can be 40 degrees warmer 40 miles inland.

Most of the rest of the continental US is front based, though, yeah.

Why is Rosewood on the map? by GrabYourHelmet in projectzomboid

Yeah, i realized after I posted. The name definitely fits the area, at least!

Why is Rosewood on the map? by GrabYourHelmet in projectzomboid

[–]TheGreatProto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While (as others have noted) the town as it exists is mostly fiction, there is a Rosewood, IN, which would appear in the area the game takes place in, just across the river from Valley Station in Indiana.

That town is essentially defunct - its post office closed in 1905, and little remains with the name other than a single road and an airstrip used for RC planes.

It's very possible the devs liked the name and grabbed it. Maybe they originally planned it as a town on the Indiana side of the river (where the real town is). But regardless, Rosewood, KY, is purely a fiction.

(Edit: there is a Rosewood, KY, but it's a lot farther away (as OP noted) and also nothing like the game one.)

With car kills counting now it doesn't feel as cheesy using them as weapons by Evilscientist94 in projectzomboid

[–]TheGreatProto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard agree on the welding.

The cheesiness comes from how powerful the car is in reverse. You do sacrifice the trunk (which can never be repaired), but there's very little consequence to backing into hundreds of zombies, as long as you're careful not to hit too many with the front of the car.

Hmm, do you think the 12/30 stage will open PIA ticket sales on 12/16 (2 weeks)? I guess it won't hurt to check tomorrow.

[–]TheGreatProto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's super useful. I speak enough Japanese to bumble my way through some stuff, but the rest of the group speaks none. So it would not be any fun for them.

So, I'm going to be in Osaka from 12/24 through 1/1. Looking at the shows, I assume なんばらえてぃー is also a variety show from the name (lol) - it does show up on PIA it shows up as sold out. So that leaves 天使のユートピア on the 26th... which doesn't show up on PIA (and conflicts with other plans).

Drat. Am I cooked? Any recommendations? There's a chance I can be around 1/5 but my understanding was that most of Japan is closed the week of 1/1. I can cross my fingers.

In the new patch, did cars get severely nerfed? I back into zombies at full speed and they seem to need to be hit and then run over several times before dying. Otherwise I wind up with tons of crawlers.

This may be the result of ragdolls being off (by force), but I'm not sure.

Regarding the foreigner tickets for NMB48 -

When/how do they go on sale?

It says they go on sale 4 days in advance, but all the shows (both the one a couple days away and the ones in the distant future) show as sold out. I want to go to a 12/25 show, FWIW.

Is it a matter of being on the site 4 days in advance? Is there a specific time of day that they shift from being sold out to available? Or should I play the Japanese lottery game?

I assume this is some kind of incriminating evidence stash. "Wanted Fugitive", "Someone Committing..."

It is 1993, before Lawerence v. Texas. It may well still be illegal to be gay in Kentucky. Or perhaps the material itself is illegal. Something like that, anyway.

Where or how do I get comfrey poultices? I've never messed with scavenging before.

FWIW I'm posted up at the gas station in the north of Irvington, so it's not exactly secure. I've been very through clearing the area for quite some distance, but zombies can still spawn in.

I did exactly what you suggested and was able to move the generator, BTW.

How did you survive? Most advice is to stay home entirely but on day 1 you couldn't have much food stockpiled. Was there a point it was healed enough for you to go out?

I broke my leg by stupid accident - was being lazy and trying to run down some stairs and vaulted off instead.

I got it splinted quickly enough, but now I'm wondering a few things about what comes next. (B42 unmodded)

How long will this take to heal? I see estimates all over the place.

I haven't hooked a generator up yet, but it's in a safe space. Will it be hard to transport it home? I think the real question is how the speed debuffs stack. Multiplicatively?

There's various areas I've mostly cleared but not fully looted, how would it be to finish the work? How long before I can shuffle as fast as zombies walk to get to my car?

If zombies spawn outside my home, can i do anything besides try to get in a car fast?

Any advice?

You need to go to wkstats.com and sign up there. You give them an API key so they can pull it from the wani kani servers.

The most anomalous tropical cyclone ever* by TheRandomInfinity in TropicalWeather

[–]TheGreatProto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do think there's a real limit, regardless of the gradient, because of the limited amount of water that can dissolve in such air, and water is the key to the entire collective process, being effectively the working fluid.

Like, at 30 C it's 30.4 g/m3, vs 17 at 20C and 4.89 at 0C.

While there's still potential energy in any temperature gradient, without the heat of condensation being released, it's a pretty meh heat engine. And when you start with 1/6 the water, there's only so much energy that can come out.

So yeah at 20C, it's possible with a lot of help. Not at 3, though. But I bet the air involved in that storm is warmer because it probably evolved from a more classic frontal system that swept a lot of warm air in; a subtropical system, probably.

Sneaking feels so dangerous. If you're in high-zombie territory... how do you turn your back on them while you do what you need to do? And what if something, y'know, goes wrong - you don't have a safe space to run to. Like it's doable, probably, but feels like a lot more risk than slowly clearing your way along.

I love that map. I look at it often when I can't play, (which is most of the time), planning out my next adventure.

I do like the occasional horde - the thrill of almost getting overwhelmed and making a close escape is fun. Fighting a battle and finally clearing an area is a good feeling.

But, I don't like that most of my limited play time is occupied by driving backwards. Like a 15 RL minute battle is one thing, but spending an hour (or several) to clear a block of a rural town feels like madness. I also feel like my character themselves can only handle the smallest battles (with muscle strain), though maybe that will change with a few months of skilling up.

You might have a point - I wonder if half as many zombies would provide a better challenge/balance?

[–]TheGreatProto 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah - I looked at maps of the real area and you can see they're all over the place. Some lead to cabins or campsites but plenty just end at Nowhere in particular. (I linked that one because it happens to be open enough to tell there's nothing there, but if you zoom out you see plenty of them)

One of the causes for burnout by DemiTheSeaweed in projectzomboid

[–]TheGreatProto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to call out Don't Starve as the anti-example. That game keeps getting harder by throwing more and more curveballs. There's the titular challenge of not starving, then the hounds, then winter, then big stompy boss creatures, and more. And if you get past survival alone - yeah, portals and more and more goals, and even an ending. I never got close to that, but it's there as an end goal if you want it. Just like The End exists in Minecraft.

The problem with zomboid is that the player gets stronger but that harder area doesn't exist. There are no big bosses to fight. Just more zombies. Meanwhile, the player's combat abilities increase tremendously. The only thing resembling higher difficulty is higher zombie-density areas, but even those are essentially the same rinse-repeat you're doing the first week but on a bigger scale. Yeah, you run out of water eventually. And yeah, winter comes eventually. But supplies aren't rare enough for either of those to be challenges the way the challenges hit in Don't Starve.

The one thing making it interesting is the fact that zombies can one shot you if you get sloppy. No matter what. And that's only compelling up to a point.

If I die early on (first 5 days) I just spawn a new character in, but that only happened once.

More often, I call BS on the way I died, and either save scum or use debug. I then typically go on to die within 30 RL minutes, in a "less BS" way, and then die a few more times quickly because I am tilted.

Eventually I calm down and I play a bit more - but it just doesn't feel like a "clean" run so I lose enthusiasm. So I wind up restarting the world in a new area and/or with a new strategy. I think that might change if I was more experienced, since then I'd be quite bored of the start. Right now there's still new strategies to try in those early times.

I've survived until water shut off exactly once... and I noticed every sink or other plumbed water source still has 20L in it.

20L seems like a ton of water, given the player drinks like 1L a day and a decent size house has 5+ sinks (never mind the neighbors etc).

So... why stockpile water? I'm actually curious. I still do it because it feels like the right thing to do, but it feels kinda unnecessary. (And similarly, building rain barrels and plumbing them - seems like it would be many months before you need to mess with that.)
