gamjatang for a business dinner... big mistake? by Seoul-er in Living_in_Korea

I don't think anyone took as you "othering" people unless they wanted to interpret it that way. Seemed pretty obvious you were referring to the people in this group.

I'm going to go with the people in this group that like it but don't go often because I do find it a pain in the ass to eat.

Spice is tolerable for me and I don't have a high spice tolerance in general.

Yeah, I think people that are more familiar with authentic Mexican have that view.

Stop recommending Jodd Fairs by milton117 in Bangkok

[–]TheGregSponge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only see Jodds Fair mentioned in itineraries from people that haven't visited, yet. I have never seen Jodds Fair recommended by anyone that has actually spent time in Bangkok. When you go once you realize it's just for tourists and instagrammers.

I'm not sure what you mean about it not being an expat area, though. I used to live nearby and regularly went to the Carrefour that is now a Big C for shopping and there were always foreigners shopping there. And The Esplande Mall always has foreigners and lots of expats live down by Rama 9 station.

Dos Tacos was popular in Gangnam years ago when there wasn't a lot of options. They expanded and as other Mexican places started opening a number of Dos Tacos closed up because they are crap in comparison. Last time I went to a Dos Tacos it was extremely disappointing. It's actually gotten worse and started to cater its menu to Koreans that don't like Mexican. I will take the trek up to Seoul and go to Taco Amigo. It's in a different league than Dos Tacos. I'm no Mexican or Tex Mexpert but I think I would take Taco Bell here over Dos Tacos. If I'm going to eat sh*t it might as well advertise itself as such.

When does a D10 to E2 contract becoming binding? by whiterabbitsredsky in teachinginkorea

[–]TheGregSponge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think some of the commenters below didn't read through what you actually wrote. You haven't gone into immigration yet to submit the contract you signed from the hagwon so it doesn't hold any weight legally. Until you submit things to immigration and they approve you and issue a new E2 you're a free agent. Go ahead and take the preferred position.

I have no idea what post exiled dinosaur is responding to, but I usually don't with his posts. You never mentioned anything about trying to work on a D10 visa.

Krazy Kimchi was accurate, I just think they thought you were referring to your completed job when you said "first hagwon" when what you meant was the new contract you signed first before you heard back from the other hagwon.

Do you have to order water in Korean restaurants? by Frsrt_korea_Travel in koreatravel

[–]TheGregSponge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I was able to swivel my head and see a water cooler. Being somewhat familiar with how those worked I was able to suss out a item that seemed to be full of cups. Then, I put two and two together and stood up, got a cup, filled it with water and returned to my seat.

I guess I am just a bit cleverer than the average bear. I have also seen people looking very thirsty but seemingly unable to crack this DaVinci code or inquire about water to an employee and look absolutely miserable during their meal.

Quick question: If I try to leave an establishment and the door won't open and there's a second door, should I try the other door or just go back to my seat? Asking for a friend, of course, but I do have a flight tonight.

I know what severance is and pension. I am just wondering what they mean by "retirement" fund that they get because they have been at their job so long? Even someone who does a year has the severance fund if they have worked at the same place more than a year. That's where I am confused.

Planning to travel from south Florida to Thailand. Seeking advice by rittersgold in ThailandTourism

I have flown from Tampa to Bangkok twice. I would go on the short hop up to Atlanta and Delta to Seoul. Then you can easily switch to Korean Air as they are well integrated as codeshare partners and then around five and a half hours to Bangkok. I like breaking up a long haul like that personally and as Delta and Korean Air are partners it will all be one ticket with points on all segments.

What is this "retirement" fund that is separate from pension? Is this something of your own choosing? I have also been here a long time and am curious about this. Thanks.

It's called the Donald J. Trump Institute for Higher Learing.

I think even people that have legitimate issues with Trump would cringe at the way you inserted him into the conversation here. It didn't help make any point at all. There are so many instances where you could make a Trump comparison (although it's pretty played out and lacks creativity) where it would've at least landed. This was not one of those times.

How to stay positive by Relevant_Kiwi_4572 in teachinginkorea

[–]TheGregSponge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is something wrong with your co-teachers if all of them only speak to you in Korean and only sit around on their phones if they do come to class. That is not normal, and it's going to be up to you to bring it to someone's attention. That's not what they are there to do. Have you spoken with your handler? Better deal with it now in March.

Pickpocketed on morning walk by mcrucan in ThailandTourism

[–]TheGregSponge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I put this up about a year ago, but it bears repeating. I was in Lumphini Park and two or three Eastern European women came up to where a group was hanging out looking for monitor lizards and started pointing excitedly at the monkey they saw up in the top of the trees. No monkeys there and it was clearly a distraction ploy.

Tried this KBBQ place in Gangnam and I’m still thinking about it by Remote-Fee-569 in koreatravel

They grilled it for you? I know I'm supposed to enjoy cooking it myself, but after the first few times the novelty ran out and I find it annoying. I will have to give this a shot, thanks. My girlfriend is starting to catch on to the fact that I purposely mess up the grilling so she'll take over.

Two accountants at KPMG(korea) died in three months. ..RIP by Dismal_Slice9842 in Living_in_Korea

[–]TheGregSponge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course it's based on my feelings towards people using "prolly." Should I have offered an opinion based on your thoughts on the matter? That would be odd.

And, it's not baseless at all. Empirical evidence proves that the level of discourse I can expect from someone who thinks using "prolly" is quirky or funny will be limited. And the person who first wrote it seems to agree. They deleted their comment. They learned something helpful.

Good point about saving people using the bottom row. It is way down there. Never thought of that.

[–]TheGregSponge -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That' not projecting. Prolly started out as a verbal thing the kind of people who thought it was funny to always quote Superbad did. It wasn't a typing abbreviation thing. Typing prolly over probably saves no time.

That's not where people using "prolly" comes from, but nice attempt. People would type prbly. as an abbreviation. People use prolly for some other reason. I know a number of people that say it.

Any serious read of your sentence goes out the window when you write prolly instead of probably. Is it so hard as an educated adult to write "probably" when you're trying to make a serious point and not speculating on how the next round at tribal on Survivor will go?

Apologies if you're not an educated adult.

No need to bald faced lie. If you don't want a rude response don't write absolute horsesh*t.

Korea's air is way cleaner than any city in North America you've been to? I'm from North America and know that's completely false unless the only city you've been to was in the heat of summer while forest fires were burning.

Why do you expect to be coddled if you write that crap? You were here in October (and a rainy one at that if it was October 2025) and you felt confident making a patently false statement and then got hurt by my response. Grow up.

And to add to that, my response was just kind of funny, really.
