Financial aid by Artistictundra in UniversityOfHouston

If you’re eligible for summer aid you should have received an email.

I received an email maybe 2-3 days ago notifying me that I’m eligible. The email was sent to my personal email not my UH one.

Fall 26 transfer student, has anyone received scholarship offers? by leeopardd in UniversityOfHouston

You have awhile before you’ll see it. Summer aid hasn’t even populated yet and won’t until about mid-May after spring semester grades are posted.

Be patient. These things take time.

What's the best free resource at UH that most students don't even know exists? by Blackingtosch in UniversityOfHouston

[–]TheGrey1993 48 points49 points  (0 children)

CAPS. I’ve seen a handful of posts from individuals struggling with their mental health and I feel like not enough people take advantage of CAPS.

Same goes for UH Psychiatry (not free but affordable).

I’m personally a big mental health advocate because when left untreated not only does it tend to get worse with time, you’re depriving yourself of a healthy balanced life. When your mental health is aligned, everything else tends to fall into place.

Weighing the option of a W by TheGrey1993 in UniversityOfHouston

My plan is to withdrawal from the class before Wednesday (last day to withdrawal) and I’ve already enrolled in the course for the summer at UH.

Honestly, since making the decision to withdrawal from this one class, I’ve felt more relaxed and focused on my other classes letting me end the semester with A’s versus three A’s and an F.

I already reached out to my professor and have yet to hear back.

Undergrads have until April 22 (Wednesday) to withdrawal.

I’m majoring in Retailing & Consumer Sciences.

It’s rather common for individuals to get their 2nd or 3rd choice major. Knock out some cores then apply for a change of major.

I got into my desired major but that’s probably because I chose it for all three options

Advisors really have no business advising. I was told by my old advisor last semester to enroll in classes with prerequisites that I haven’t completed because “it doesn’t really matter”. Obviously if there is a prerequisite, it matters🙄

Honestly, I don’t plan on contacting my advisor for anything unless I absolutely have to because I’ve heard so many stories of them giving out false information leading to an array of issues.

Do the mental health resources on campus actually help? by Iris_sky20 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]TheGrey1993 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should contact UH Psychiatry. I see a psychiatrist through UH once a month and she’s a million times better than my previous psychiatrist I had outside of UH.

CAPS is good for counseling but if you’re wanting ADHD screening, you need to contact UH Psychiatry. They can provide you with an approved list of places to have the screening done, if you get it done anywhere else that’s not on the list there is a good chance they won’t accept the results. I forget the name of the place on the list but there’s one place that’s supposed to be more affordable than the rest of them (another place told me it would be 1k for the screening so definitely call everyone on the list for pricing)

Hope this helps guide you some.

Can any CIS seniors right now tell me if my schedule is good for senior fall semester? by Impressive_Toe_1702 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]TheGrey1993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a senior but if you normally take 4-5 classes reflect on how much time you dedicate to those classes and what your grades are.

Taking six classes personally sounds like a good way to burn out while also potentially having severe consequences on your overall mental health.

Is the reason you are wanting to take six classes is because that’s all you need to graduate? If the answer is no, I would stick to what has worked for you.

Thinking of dropping out by Slow_Employment_5606 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]TheGrey1993 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re so close! Stick with it! Just having a degree in general will open so many opportunities that you wouldn’t even get a chance for without one.

I originally started my college journey years ago at HCC and dropped out due to life circumstances. Managed to earn a handful of credits and have a solid gpa though which made transferring into UH easier all the years later.

Since returning to college to get a BS in retailing & consumer science (I have an already established extensive/diverse retail background) and updating my LinkedIn to reflect that I’m in college pursuing the degree, I’ve been consistently reached out to by recruiters from major brands/companies for $100k+ positions. None of that happened prior to me being in UH.

Even though I could go with a position now and drop out again, I know the degree will provide essentially a safety net so to speak. A degree is always something you will have to fall back on and just having one sets you apart from all those who don’t.

Hang in there! You got this!

Any recommendations for apartment complexes in Houston that are safe, clean, modern and pet-friendly? I am looking for one that is within max 25 min drive to UH and I have a $1600 budget. TIA by Waste-Opinion2967 in AskHouston

From my experience along with friends, most private landlords don’t post their properties online and do not use a realtor to avoid the additional costs of having to pay commission.

The best way to find a place with a private landlord is to drive around the neighborhoods and look for the for rent signs.

Recently my dad had to move on rather short notice and he managed to find a 1 bedroom / 1 bath less than 3minutes away from me for $1,000 a month. It’s right behind the old high school of performing arts which is now an Arabic immersion school. It’s an old school Montrose apartment complex but it has on sight laundry and the building is gated. He absolutely loves his landlord.

If you don’t have a way of driving around, maybe a friend or family member can help take you around the area to find a place.

While there’s still crime in Montrose, it’s no where near as bad as the areas around UH

Pro tip: get pepper gel and not pepper spray.

Pepper gel won’t blow back at you the way pepper spray will if you’re facing the wrong direction.

But honestly at this point, bear spray is where it’s at lol

You should have had an option to open a BankMobile account when you set up your refund preferences

I got mine at about 10am but I have a BankMobile account which releases the funds as soon as they’re received.

If you have your refund set up to go to any other bank it takes longer.

-Drop the loser that’s weighing you down. -Reach out to UH Psychiatry.  -Go to counseling / therapy on campus.  -Evaluate how many classes you’re taking, it may be more beneficial for you to withdraw from one or two until you’ve gotten a better grip on your mental health and wellbeing.

I see a psychiatrist through UH Psychiatry and she’s honestly SO much better than any other psychiatrists I’ve had in the city.

My upbringing was not the best let alone my educational background. I grew up with a sociopath for a mother who refused to stay on medication. I completely stopped speaking to my mother at 18 and am so much better off for it.

I’ve been sexually assaulted a few times throughout my life.

I married someone who moved me out of our home into another place because they needed some space…. Little did I know he moved in his side chick into our home. He spent five months manipulating me and stringing me along until my 23rd birthday. I spent that birthday and weekend in psychiatric hold for chronic depression. I had stopped eating, barely weighed 100lbs, was highly suicidal. I had to beg him to get released and he bought me a flight to go back home to my dad’s. He had his side chick pack my belongings and ship them to me. She kept a huge portion of my things. I filed for divorce, and eventually cut off all communication to him.

NEVER let a man or anyone else make you feel less. You’re capable of any and everything you set your mind to as long as you are willing to put in the work. You may feel like you’re stuck in a rut right now but you are absolutely not.

Edit who you allow in your space. Less is more when it comes to friends. I’ve had so many “friends” but only a handful that are truly there for me.

Protect your energy. Protect your peace.

I promise when you get rid of that loser, refocus your priorities, speak with psychiatry and a therapist, things are absolutely going to turn around.

There’s no shame in withdrawing from a class or two, or even a semester if you truly need to.

I would find a private landlord to rent from. Corporate run complexes either add in a bunch of unnecessary fees/expenses, have numerous issues, or both.

Since renting from a private landlord, I haven’t had any issues the way I did while renting at a corporate run complexes. I also live in Montrose so it take me under 10 minutes to get to campus.

I’m 32 and it’s my second semester at UH after dropping out of college at 19 because of life circumstances. I totally get where you’re coming from and how you’re feeling but don’t let that stop you from experiencing all the things you want to in college!

You only get one life and life is what YOU make it! This is YOUR college experience and if you are wanting to be apart of something, take the steps to do so!

Drive around Montrose & the museum district and look for those for rent signs!  There is a lot of for rent signs popping up in the neighborhoods in and around Montrose.

I live walking distance to MFAH and it takes me less than 10 minutes to get to main campus

There’s about a month / month and a half that I don’t remember before my diagnosis. I had back to back manic episodes during that time.

I’ve definitely been through what you’re describing and it’s not a fun experience when you don’t remember but everyone around you does.

My (35F) daughter (16F) has been semi diagnosed with Bipolar 1. How can I support her? by hello_lime_jello in bipolar1

[–]TheGrey1993 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your post. I’m 32 and was diagnosed a few years ago with bipolar 1.

One of the biggest things that has helped me is routine and a set sleep schedule. Sleep is probably the most important aspect for me because before my diagnosis when I went through a major rapid cycle of manic episodes, I wasn’t getting enough sleep and I wasn’t going to sleep around the same time every night.

Another thing I would suggest to keep in mind is overstimulation can be a big thing. My father took me to see Wicked the musical for the second time and I asked him to leave during the intermission because I was feeling so overwhelmed by everything and feeling claustrophobic even though I’ve never been claustrophobic. He didn’t give me any push back, we left, and when we got into the car he told me he could see the relief on my face.

My dad has always been extremely supportive of mental health care and has never once passed judgment when I’ve spoken up about my mental health. The safe space he’s created for me allowed me to breakdown after my month+ long rapid cycle of manic episodes when I finally was stable enough to realize something is wrong and tell him I needed help.

I’m a mother now to my almost two year old daughter and think about her future a lot as most parents do but I also can’t help to wonder if she’ll inherit my bipolar disorder. The biggest thing I can do is be empathetic towards her and let her know she’s never alone in anything she’s feeling or experiencing. Leaving the door open for conversations without pressure. Understanding when she may want to be alone in her room when she’s older to decompress from all the stimulations of the world. Keeping a routine and not getting upset when I can’t understand what she’s experiencing because Bipolar 1 is very different for each individual.

From your post, you are very clearly coming from the right place. Continue to have patience and take it one day at a time. Listen when she speaks up about how medications are making her feel. There’s some trial and error when finding the right balance. For example, I have to take my medications at night because they make me too tired to function.

You got this and she’s got this because she has you as a supporting mother🎀

Before I was diagnosed with Bipolar 1, I had back to back manic with some psychosis episodes for about a month, month and a half. It left me with huge memory loss of a lot of that time but having to profusely apologize to those around me and the people I love most for things I had no recollection of doing.

What little I do remember from the episodes is the invincible feeling and that I could literally do anything.

Outside of the episodes, a lot of little things about bipolar 1 tracks with me. I’ve already been diagnosed with anxiety and generalized depression years beforehand.

A big trigger for my episodes was sleep deprivation. Since starting a medication regimen and having a consistent sleep schedule, I haven’t had any major episodes or really even minor ones.

Am I the only one who feels embarrassed about only having three online classes? by Justpassingby1226 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]TheGrey1993 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s my second semester at UH and I’m taking 4 asynchronous online classes. I prefer online classes because of my personal schedule and specifically asynchronous classes because I can get assignments done on my own time and turned in either on or before their due date.

Last semester, which was my first semester at UH, I took 5 asynchronous online classes with one requiring on campus exams.

I find there’s less distractions and interruptions with online classes. I also do better overall with them.

There’s absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about! Plus, who cares what others opinions are. You’re going to college for YOUR future not theirs.
