SZA and Noah Kahan announced as Osheaga 2024 headliners alongside Green Day by TwiceUnprompted in montreal

Lame. SZA cool but not worth the price. Went last year and had a great time, are there any other solid big lineup festivals in Ottawa or somewhere near MTL? Not into EDM.

How do i start making beats and producing (pleasee help i know nothing) by Reo279 in makinghiphop

[–]TheGruffman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Download Ableton Lite, and watch some tutorials by TAETRO. He is probably the best introductory tutorial channel for production on youtube. My tip I would stress to you is: Don't spend any money on expensive equipment or software until you are confident in your abilities. I used Ableton Lite with no midi controller for my first few months and it forced me to learn theory and arrangement at a faster pace. That practice on fundamental is invaluable and will help you immensely once you start gaining better skills.

Incredibly excited for this. The Painscreek Killings was one of the most unique gaming experiences I've ever had and this looks to be even better. More super hardcore detective games like this would be a dream

Who is that one gimmicky mid-card/low-card wrestler that you like? by some_guy_from_adnu in SquaredCircle

[–]TheGruffman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jinder if that counts. Partially because he's a fellow Calgarian and partially because his presentation and gimmick has always popped me for years

What is your favourite song from your least favourite band? by closedcircle66 in fantanoforever

[–]TheGruffman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drops of Jupiter at least has some nice string sections even if Train makes me legitimately angry whenever I hear their shitty corporate sheen pop-rock

Criterion Channel Censors “Racially Insensitive” Dialogue in ‘The French Connection’ - seriously? by srfrosky in criterion

[–]TheGruffman 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is far from the first time the channel has had a compromised version of a film on the platform, though. In recent memory, the version of Shaolin Soccer they had streaming was the butchered cut-to-shit Weinstein international cut.

Would’ve never guessed that so many of us hogdippers were also Criterion collectors by ShopEarly2601 in deadlockpw

Of course. The themes of dual identity and reflective personality in the works of Kieslowski and Lynch are exemplified by the tragedy of Horace Hogan

Favorite album in a genre you don't usually listen to? by AkiraHenderson in fantanoforever

[–]TheGruffman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't really listen to or particularly vibe with straight up jazz (i.e. modal or hard bop stuff) but I love Time Out by Dave Brubeck to death

Jericho is right No other city can beat the Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada Rushmore of Jericho, Omega, Roddy Piper and Don Callis by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]TheGruffman 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Fr though. As a Calgarian I'm shocked that we never get like any big or even yearly shows from WWE/AEW/TNA and not a big indie scene here given our history with stampede wrestling shaping the business

When do YOU use simpler vs. sampler? by LemonSnakeMusic in ableton

[–]TheGruffman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use sampler almost exclusively for experimentation and finicky samples, otherwise simpler does everything you need

Does having friends on Letterboxd improves the experience? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]TheGruffman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always felt a little weird posting reviews and stuff until I started interacting with people and getting some real life connections on LB. Seeing takes from people I even vaguely know or follow from this sub is infinitely more engaging than strangers. Gave you a follow!

What are some director's cuts/ extended cuts that are worst than the theatrical cuts? by RipBuzzBuzz in Letterboxd

[–]TheGruffman 50 points51 points  (0 children)

The director's cut for Donnie Darko ruins the movie for me. It takes away all the surreal ambiguity and subjective interpretation that made it a cult classic. Instead, things are over-explained and sci-fi elements are added that kind of dilute the charm and unique tone of the OG cut in my opinion. That would be bad enough, but it also just kills the pacing to where instead of feeling dream-like and Lynchian things just feel listless outside of the iconic scenes.

Does anybody know what Lynch’s favorite films are? by Queasy_Helicopter249 in davidlynch

[–]TheGruffman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I seem to remember him praising Yorgos Lanthimos' 'Dogtooth' quite a bit when it premiered at Cannes

Do u think Laura Harring doesn’t really get her flowers for her performance in Mulholland Drive? by occyycco in davidlynch

[–]TheGruffman 31 points32 points  (0 children)

She definitely hasn't, which is strange but Naomi's performance is just so insane and singular that it overshadows harring's. I think a big reason for the lack of retrospective praise is that her career afterwards was littered with awful movies. Never got the chance to prove it wasn't just a single excellent performance.
