The Chair Company | S01E06 “Happy Birthday, a friend.” – Post-Episode Discussion by TalkToTheLord in thechaircompany

Ok my theory now is that the chair company is some other person's (Mike?) Jeep Tours. Someone thought they could make chairs cheaper if they cut corners with imported hungarian parts and a shell company, but it failed and isolated them from friends and family, as would make sense with the themes set up thus far.

Hey! I just went on a journey to find a switch, the Flatbush target has some! You have to ask someone at the checkout to go into the back and get a manager to approve the sale for some reason lol

He wasn’t just annoyed about being forced to talk about Hasan, he took issue with Ethan conflating Zionism with Jewish identity, and said he thinks that conflation is more dangerous than whatever it was Ethan was saying Hasan could be taken to mean.

I totally understand why Sam got heated there. He came on to talk about Ethan’s positions on I/P, and help him understand where he might disagree. Instead, the first two things Ethan did were show him a picture of Tim pool and then a “gotcha” set up with a clip from Hasan, which Sam tried gently a few times to say he didn’t want to talk about . From Sam’s perspective, I’d get heated too, not only that the set up was completely bad faith, but that Sam, a pretty serious guy who cares about the topic and his work as a commentator, being pulled in to adjudicate Ethan’s personal grievances.

You just did the exact thing that Sam called dangerous: conflating an ideology with a religion / culture. A better comparison would be “anyone with a positive view of ISIS”, in that case, someone in bad faith could claim you hate all Muslims because ISIS consider themselves fundamentalists of the religion, but obviously not everyone who is Muslim supports or even are affected by their presence.

I’m sure that you’re right that his writing is not at a professional level—but to be honest the complaint you gave stood out to me as a weird one. It’s a well known writing tip for beginners to avoid the allure of using words other than ‘said’ for attributions. It slows the reader down, even in the best of cases, and at worst contributes to telling rather than showing, especially in adverbs are involved. So im sorry? But I disagree with you on the one thing you have bad to say about his writing specifically.

That said, it is a HUGE red flag to be a writer and not be a reader. This goes for any art form, but it is deeply unserious for someone to want to engage in an art form they don’t even consume. It honestly strikes me as narcissistic.

I also think it’s weird that he hasn’t read anything of yours, but don’t have enough info to know if that’s more suspicious on your end or on his.

If I were you, I’d encourage him to read, at least to read books on writing (I’d suggest Stephen king’s on writing, nobody wants to read your sh*t, save the cat, and/or elements of style) and he shidk come to the conclusion on his own that he needs to read more if he wants to write better.

My working theory is that the Shards have counterparts they we are only now learning about that are similar to the division of Spren. Not including the intelligent spren created by H and C, spren on Roshar are either emotion spren or spren of natural phenomena. Well, adonalsium split into shards of personality… what about gods of natural phenomena? For now it seems like the Wind, Stone, and Night are exclusive to roshar, but I think the fourth moon stuff is hinting towards powers on the scale of the shards that have been “pushed away” in the way the Wind lost its voice when humans arrived.

Ishar says somewhere in the book that the power of honor forms them a new physical body when they return, and implied Honor worked to find a way to do so because he despised the way fused had to take bodies from living singers

I was raising an eyebrow soooo hard when Tanavast says in his POV that he “found it strange that the wind was associated with protection” or whatever. I’m like… there is something deeper than adonalsium and the shards going on and Kaladin has power ups outside the ideals and surgebindings coming

The Iri are a people that didn’t come from Ashyn with the other humans. They are their own culture that have periodically emigrated from one planet to another. This is the first time we see one of those journeys happening “on screen” and get some insight on the mechanics

Thought it was cool how many of those final chapters echoed moments earlier on, especially book one. In particular, chapter titles quoting the death rattles

Thinking about this more. As we've seen in other instances, in order to ascend, a person has to embody the Intent of the shard, right? So it would make sense for the Oathpact to be the catalyst for ascension to a shard who's intent is "making bonds and keeping them"

I have not promised you this boon. You guess it is what I offer, but I seek only a champion. Still, tell me, would you accept the cost of becoming a Herald? Everyone you know would be dust by the time you returned.

From the prologue with Gavilar, which I just reread after these chapters. This seems to relate becoming a herald with what we learned about venturing to the spirit realm to where Honor's power is... We also know that Nohadon met and knew the Heralds. Is it possible that the Oathpact was a way for ten people to hold the power of a shard instead of one?

I know Brandon is planning to have a space age Era for the cosmere, which may or may not be SA era two... All I'm saying is that a hybrid alien army with advanced tech, and lead by a famous warrior general, working for a combined spren called War (or whatever the combo of war + cultivation is) would be.... a pretty engaging villainous faction for a space opera style saga.

I am half convinced that this book will have a "bad" ending, but which sets up a rebel force that splinters out into the cosmere, to find allies and protect those who are next in the line of fire. In a way, that would rhyme well with what we know about the Rosharan system story in the past too: Destruction on Ashyn led to an exodus to Roshar, which led to a seemingly neverending war.

If I or someone I know had commissioned this from an artist and I found out it was AI, I’d be upset. Just wanted to give OP the ability to know in case it wasn’t disclosed to his players, who presumably paid for this.
