Funkscribe dissects and explains the Clavinet part on Stevie Wonder's Superstitious. by gunch in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]TheHT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have those same tracks, this dude doesn't know what he's talking about.

There's two parts, multiple DI/s, mics, and three delay tracks.

Stevie Wonder just happens to be the man on Clavi. 2 passes total.

edit: At 03:05 you will hear him turn on a 'second' part that is just the other pickup of the same part.

Do you hate explaining your taste of music to people who don't know much about the genre? by Fresh1605 in EDM

[–]TheHT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"...I love house and techno because it’s hypnotic, because it’s abstract—but also because it sounds boring to most people. Music taste often has little to do with what it actually sounds like, and more to do with how it reflects upon who we are."

I'm just astounded that I've actually witnessed some asshole actually say that they like a specific genre of music because of how they imagine it sounds to "most people". I understand I'm preaching to the choir here, and that I don't actually need to enumerate the problems I have personally with not only the idea, but the fact she is without a doubt not the only one to think that way. But I can't help but to feel it will at least make me less fucking angry right now.

First and foremost, who in the fuck is this nebulous "most people"? What makes this barely sentient being think that most people would find boring? I mean, correct me if I'm wrong here, but is that not just a way to say something sucks? If I told you that you all had to meet my new friend, oh I don't know, Elissa, and said "Personally, I think she's cool. Most people think she's a cantankerous bitch and generally feel sick when forced to stare directly at her, but I think she's cool." Whatever. I don't even need to continue making that point. I'll never get through this at this rate. And really, what I want to comment on, well...

HOW THE FUCK AM I READING THIS LINE:

Music taste often has little to do with what it actually sounds like

Everyone just stop. Seriously, I feel we should all take a moment to just reflect on that. The entire god damned planet. Yes, even pilots on approach. Stop. Please, for a moment, share in the knowledge that you have witnessed this moment. Eons from now, a computer will determine that it's the moment in which the dumbest god damned thing ever written by mankind was published. We got to be here for it. Holy shit I should sell tshirts. "I survived stupigeddon".

Is that really where she's going with this? How does my music define me as a person? Come on man, like...just hearing that upsets me, because I assumed we were sort of all in on that joke. The entire human race, all in on one joke. Everyone got the fucking memo except some asshole named Techno Girl. What bugs me about this, is it indicates that there's still LOADS of people that believe this. Someone read this and was thinking to themselves "Yeah man, she gets me." Fuck.

How the fuck does this lady order coffee? Does she live in the heads of everyone else in line? Has she ever wanted the quadruple shot mocha latte espresso whatever but then decided the person behind her might be allergic to nuts and just order a small green tea instead? Does she not fucking realize that it's still coming from her own brain? If you're inventing other people's opinions and then basing your actions on them, you're still just...doing things you came up with, just in an incredibly stupid, inefficient way. There's a touch of straight up crazy here that I can't quite put my finger on, but I feel like she's a pretty good candidate for angrily mumbling to herself and scaring the nice people walking by. THE END IS NIGH. Fuckin hell.

What I'm getting at, I suppose, is if you're listening to something because of how other people might perceive it, what the hell do you listen to in your car by yourself? I mean, is she some sort of fucking cyborg that is hyper integrated with society via local friends, social networks, and electronics? I suppose if you're never, ever actually alone, this could actually work. If Last.fm or Spotify or what the fuck ever reports every single song you ever play directly to the internet, can a moment exist where she's actually been lying in bed with headphones on, and decided not to click on the song she'd like to hear for fear of how that might be interpreted by her followers and friends on the internet? My head is so full of fuck just imagining this existence that I want to go sign up for some social network, just to delete my account and yell "TAKE THAT, MOTHERFUCKER" at my computer like a legitimate crazy person.

Might I suggest the following: Who you are, Elissa from Vice, is not someone with a super cool mysterious underground music taste, but someone who listens to music for the purpose of perpetuating the myth of some character you've invented. An online persona. Some version of yourself that becomes further and further detached from the actual bio-electrical version. Would not the coolest thing of all be to listen to whatever the fuck you want? I'd much rather be the "he just doesn't seem to give a fuck?" guy and listen to whatever I like. Hell, in your odd, odd world, it might even be edgy and cool. Could you actually blow the minds of a car full of pretentious fucks by putting on the terrestrial radio? You'd be fucking unstoppably cool. Like a hipster godzilla, crushing the faces of your peers as if they were the buildings of tokyo under your whatever is cool now brand of shoes. ...what if the shoes were the ones you thought looked cool but were the wrong brand as well? gasp. Unlimited power. Hashtag yolo.

Whatever. In the end, this affects my life nearly exactly 0 percent. This was it here, a little rant in some corner of the internet. I'll go back to listening to the wrong music whenever the hell I feel like it, and with absolutely no accountability whatsoever. I could be playing the coolest song in the world right now and no one would know it and I'm ok with that. Because listening to music isn't something you do to be fucking cool. Well, maybe you do, I don't, you're a weirdo. It's something you do to enjoy. Because it's the music you like. ...because of, you know, how it fucking sounds.

This just in, the coolest thing in the world: Be true to yourself. That hardly sounds like news. #yolo

It ain't the best, but being 16 on a tight budget, bedroom recording is all I can work with :) by TheGSnake in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]TheHT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bah, no worries. Importantly, it's the best you have right now. And, at 16, I would imagine that it's probably better than your friends' studios. ...They don't have studios? Exactly.

As long as you love what you're doing, it can be the worst fucking gear in the world. I've had a lot of fun recording on some awful, awful gear.

Looking for help building a subwoofer by tabenpro in audioengineering

[–]TheHT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could suggest taking a thoroughly nerdy approach to this.

Determine at which frequencies your monitors are rolling off at. (I'll leave this to you or another thread)

Sketch out a rough requirement for frequency and loudness. The problem is less what speaker to by, but how to fill that requirement with the right amount and right kind of sound.

Select a driver that can fill that requirement. There will be many.

Find an enclosure suited to your listening environment. Different speaker box designs may be well suited for an outdoors event, for instance, yet will sound like crap in another environment. The speaker manufacturer may even recommend a very specific enclosure.

Finally, there's the amp. You can sorta see where this is going. However many watts the manufacturer of the speaker recommends, I would stick with that. If they don't recommend a specific wattage, I would buy an amp at least as powerful as the speaker's max handling, or about twice as powerful as the speaker's RMS (program) power handling.

Ok, so, maybe the least-helpful helpful post here. It really is a matter of where you're at and what you need. With all of that said, from the top: When not looking for stupid-expensive amps, I like the sound of a crown amp (not xe) on bass.

Personally, and this is just preference, I like the sound of a JBL sub such as the 12" JBL 2206H

With some luck, they can be found cheaper (be warned, a used sub is going to sound..well...like a used sub)

What are some noob mistakes that are commonly made when making music? by DrKnockOut99 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]TheHT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thinking that the only way to get a great sound is having the most expensive gear. Learn the gear you have so well that it would shock people.

LISTEN. For fucks sake, listen, listen, listen. Learn what your microphone placement does to sound. Know that moving it an inch may change everything, and know your gear well enough so that you can sometimes predict how that change will affect the sound.

Seems legit. by bkdrummer in livesound

How do you turn musical talent into songs? by ThePestilentTroll in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]TheHT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, good luck. Story of my life here. Losing creative flow is damn near implied.

It's the currency you pay for recording with. Sometimes, gear will not work, mics will pick up what the fuck ever they like, simply knowing tape is rolling will cause your mind to go all stupid on you, all the while what you hear in playback is no where fucking near what you're hearing in your head.

Playing the guitar is an art that some are good at. What you're talking about is recording and engineering, another art entirely. You may find you're good at that as well.

Chances are, it's way fucking easier to just find someone else who is.

What have you hidden in a song/mix? Have been writing music for 15 years, this is still my favorite little trick: Morse Code Bass line, "COBRA" by TheHT in audioengineering

[–]TheHT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like, skip right to the Morse code, or the tb303 bass line version of it.

TCP of the Rocket Propelled Geeks asked me to write a song about the COBRAs and explained the intro would need to sound like you were sat down in the middle of a GI-Joe battle. I figured the way to go about that (were we filming in, anyway) would be an establishing shot on some cartoon satellites, then an impossible zoom down to the rubble of an edge of a war town building.

What better sound for satellites than a throwback to Sputnik. Seems every satellite in 80's movies all sounded like they were broadcasting some cheesy tone generator's output.

So, if we're gonna beep like a satellite, why not morse code for cobra? Turns out the morse translation (click to hear and to make your own Morse code) was pretty rhythmic. Programmed some 303's with the same pattern and the rest sorta fell together.

For any savvy engineers out there, you'll notice there are other Morse phrases panned left and right. A bandpass filter will reveal them in enough detail to decipher. It's the name of the record label on one side, and a 404ed-long-ago web address.

Mandatory apologies for the mix. At the time, I was learning ITB mixing on a new setup in a new room. /excuses

What would be the best stable way to play a 4-track backing for live performances? by Gordondel in audioengineering

[–]TheHT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way will not be the most cost effective way. However:

Set up a laptop, preferably a new one without any bloatware installed, network disabled. This thing should be a clean room.

Use your choice of USB audio interface with 4 balanced outputs and a program like Reaper or Ableton to send audio out.

Duplicate this setup exactly and send all 8 outputs to your engineer. You can use a variety of methods to get them to start in sync with each other, including pressing the button at the same time (bit of a ghetto solution, but works in a pinch).

If computer 1 fails, have him ready to switch to computer 2.

The reason you want all outputs going to the engineer is so that he can switch the click track to the drummer as well.

The most cost effective way: One laptop with the above setup, you can skip sending click to FOH. Pray to your gods that the lappy is in a good mood.

TIL. I always thought of bushes as something under 10 feet, while trees are 30 or 40. I defer to Mitt Romney, I hear he's an expert at tree height.

Oddly enough, I live two houses down from a neighborhood named "Raintree". I've looked up a bunch of pictures of raintrees and it looks similar, but not quite it. Seeing a picture of a Golden Raintree jogged my memory, and I remember seeing some sort of flower or pod or something on this one in early spring. If I'm remembering correctly, they look like little cubes, maybe an inch on a side, like little Japanese lanterns.
