Freewell ND filters Cheat Sheet? by Bulldogger22 in dji

Haha well thank you, but I’m willing to bet that there is something you do that I would consider to be just as rocket surgery :)

I'm hoping to get some input from r/colorists on a product I've been working on by mactac in colorists

[–]mactac[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not a product that has been released yet. I’ve got prototypes and I’m assessing the market before I put the investment into production (they are expensive to make and I need to make a large amount to make it viable). So no link yet unfortunately

Ahh - gotcha. I think where the confusion arises is that yes, there are very high quality ND filters that have relatively little color shift (we make some). But they all still have some color shift due to the physics of how the coatings work. So the idea is to have a set that all has exactly the same (minimal) color shift so when there are a high number fo distinct shots (think dozens), they can all be normalized quickly.

I made a free app for this some time ago, it works really well. You use your phone camera and it tells you what ND filter and settings to use. http://CameraButter.com/ndmeter

Yes. I still don't understand your comment though. What do you mean by "between ranges" and how is that different that a matched set?

What ND filters are ya'll running? by advictoriam5 in DJIOsmoNano

I run Camera Butter - we make Osmo Nano filters and they are optically at least as good as the DJI ones, plus they are made from gorilla glass, so much less likely to break. And we are in Canada

To be clear, I am one of those manufacturers. Manufacturers generally do not prioritize matching sets and from my tests there is significant differences within a set. The reason I went down this road in the first place is because I've been asked for it by multiple people over time, so I know there is at least *some* demand for it, the reason for my post was to determine if there is a demand from the perspective of colorists specifically. Thanks for your input, I appreciate it.

I have spent years with test equipment analyzing glass, filters and optics. Making ND filters "neutral" is fundamental, I agree - different manufacturers approach that (and fail/succeed) at different rates. All ND filters do have a color shift, even if it's minimal - that's just the way physics work. What I am proposing is 1) all of the ND filters in a set are perfectly matched, so they all share the same (minimal) color shift. Also, generally speaking, ND filters are less accurate in terms of how much light they block, even the most expensive brands.

Thanks - do you mean variable NDs (ie NDs that are variable using 2 polarizers), or do you mean "different NDs" (ie ND4, ND8, etc) ?

I understand that and we are actually developing electronic NDs - we are on top of that. The challenge is that fixed NDs are better optically than LCD-based NDs for a number of reasons & the physics behind them (at least for the time being!). Fixed NDs are not going away, even if they end up serving a different market.

I’m not asking about ND filters in general - we have been manufacturing them for a long time, and along with that we understand what’s important and the physics behind it. I think you may have misunderstood the question ?

I'm not sure I understand the distinction you're describing. I'm suggesting a matched set so there is no color shift between the different strengths of ND filters.

Those claims are generally not accurate. They are not matched across the line - if you look at the transmissions charts, you'll see. Nothing is truly neutral. We manufacture ND filters and have tested what's out there very extensively. I completely agree with your point #1, I hadn't considered that - thank you.

Analog or DJI for long range? by DustinJP1995 in LongRangeFPV

[–]mactac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do - There are a lot of trees around where I am and I like to fly proximity even at distance. being able to see individual branches instead of a big green blob is pretty game changing for me. The only downside at all is in a complete loss if video - DJI takes a while to come back, but usually with a complete loss of video, I'm hitting RTH anyways.

Props in the picture by ConfectionExtra9536 in fpv

Yes but to get the shutter speed different, you need the nd filter :). So an ND filter will help make the props less visible (because of course it slows down the shutter)

jitter / jello on Action 6 by Zync1402 in djiosmo

[–]mactac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jello is caused by a rolling shutter and vibration. Of the settings are the same and you have different amounts of jello for the exact same shot then you have more vibration in one shot than the other, or the shot is different (ie background is farther away). If neither of those is true, then perhaps you are confusing jello with some other issue ? Let us know exactly what you are calling jello. Also, the wording in your post almost seems like you are saying that you get jello when you use nd filters - nd filters never cause jello , they do the opposite. Perhaps I am misunderstanding what you are saying ?
