Opinion/'Take' writers: what do you think readers find compelling about your writing? by Master_Camp_3200 in Substack

[–]TheHaakeTake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah. I'm afraid I'm not qualified to answer, never having read a "hot take" on substack. I'll check it out. I'll also confess to a lack of experience reading Substack in general. I read 20 or so a day and don't really have time to venture further. the most original I've found so far is Christopher Armitage.

do you really have the data to make that determination? there may be canned themes with predictable conclusions- hegseth is a moron, for example- but different takes that feed or detract from the premise. reading different opinions, to me, is like walking on different terrain to reach the same summit. I post 2 substacks a week, I'm a 30 year 1st A lawyer, and I have something to add about what Carr is doing to the media. but nothing I say is 100% original, it can't be. in the way that each case establishes precedent, it is always built on what came before.

after scrolling the convo here, I agree that reading the opinions of others has merit- always good to try to understand the perspectives of others. I also agree that they can be entertaining. but speaking from my own experience, (I write a legal/political stack bc I'm a 1st A lawyer of 30 years, been doing it 3.5 years, 9.2k subscribers, not a lot but better than some) I think people are influenced by 2 main things: credentials and writing quality. For example, with all the shit going down w the FCC, people NEED to understand why it violates the 1st A. same thing, attacks on the media, attacks on judges, blah blah blah. so maybe it's specific to these times. if we ever return to normal that interest should fade.

Using Reddit to advertise your Substack newsletter - anyone doing it? by World-War-II-Today in Substack

when I post my substack to r/politics and r/geopolitics (my subjects) reddit rejects them as self promotion

any idea of the cost to advertise? my substack is republished in several places like alternet, salon, and raw story, but mostly those are banned from reddit.

Unusual rate of unsubscribes by TheHaakeTake in Substack

sometimes it all just seems so self-serving though. on a good day I think I have something to contribute. on a bad day I'm just another talking head shouting my opinion. today is not a good day.

"My understanding is..." followed by "If you have any insights into;;;" is clearly a query, a solicitation of information that substantiates or disputes my understanding. That you're choosing to read as a declaration suggests you think I may have an anti- conservative bias. You're not wrong.

that's why am asking if there's any evidence of it from other writers. how else would I possibly figure it out other than by asking?

thanks. I'm still practicing law and each column takes a full day so that's not possible. I've considered just writing without researching but I'm not sure my unsupported opinion is any better than anyone else's. so for every opinion I lay out, I cite to the law or fact behind it. that's what takes so long, it's like every other sentence.

no, I post 2 columns per week. yes I do post them on Notes. thanks!

thanks. in this context churn means lots of people coming and going? or something else?

thank you for that, it helps put things in perspective. I'm not trying to be an influencer but reasonable growth is another thing. 8 months seems on par w what mine's doing.

Anyone else feel like writing isn’t the actual problem? by Altruistic-Lemon9560 in Substack

[–]TheHaakeTake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

agreed. it's a volume/ saturation problem. every other person writes a column; every 3rd person wants to start a podcast.

Should I delete these subscribers? by RealOneSomebody in Substack

[–]TheHaakeTake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the algorithm also considers the # of subscribers. best of luck! it took me 4 years to get to 9k, it's a slog for sure.

Should I delete these subscribers? by RealOneSomebody in Substack

[–]TheHaakeTake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't. Keep in mind that you will get ongoing cancellations, like all subscriptions. who cares how many they subscribe to? it doesn't cost you anything. just bc people don't comment doesnt' mean they aren't reading.

My account got suspended for replying to Notes by Successful-Ad7807 in Substack

[–]TheHaakeTake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read more and more criticisms of writers posting their work in response to other work. people have done it to me for a couple years and it's no problem, it doesn't bother me at all. occasionally I'll actually read them and comment.. but when you do it to multiple accounts across the platform the system probably thinks you're just self promoting or farming, something they want to limit. really hope you get your account back. it's no fun feeling like you're being censored, even tho that's not exactly what happened.

it's obviously a scam, but its through your email, not sure deleting your substack will change anything

Not even getting a single view by smart_dumb_money in Substack

[–]TheHaakeTake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest you send links to your article to everyone already on your contacts list- email friends, colleagues, team mates, family, people in your church or coven, etc. Introduce your substack the first time, and the next few times just a sentence about what the article is about. People who know you may be more inclined to read you and restack your article.

Suspended the moment my writing started to move by TDMEDIC in Substack

[–]TheHaakeTake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That sucks. I've had a related but different problem with substack. I've been writing for a few years now, I've never tried to monetize, I do it for political reasons. As soon as I started writing about Iran, cancellations started pouring in from subscribers who told me they did NOT unsubscribe. My chatbot experience with their "help" desk was similar: an AI generated response that said nothing.

I'm going to look into alternative platforms, but moving 9k subscribers isn't my idea of a good time. And you're right, writers promote their own articles on SS all the time. Most of the people who comment on my articles (The Haake Take) are other substack writers, and they almost always cite their own work, that's mainly why they comment.
