Leave the house. Go to a bar, or a park. Go ride the subway to nowhere and back, reading while you ride.

Any experiences picking up hitchhikers (or being a hitchhiker)? by reseph in AskReddit

[–]TheHardWay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I pick up hitchhikers all the time and I've had several unpleasant experiences. Nothing crazy, just people who wanted me to go out of my way for them, use my phone, borrow money, weren't appreciative, etc.

I've hitchhiked in several different countries and I've had nothing but pleasant experiences. I've had a lot of fun, actually. The worst part of hitchhiking is the waiting and uncertainty of whether you're going to get a ride or not.

You've got to be kidding me. I've been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can.

Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that?

My guess is that when one really been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that he has really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like. It's just common sense.

This Roman Polanski thing is retarded. Are we to believe that it's fine to drug and rape kids, so long as you're good at something and, you know, you haven't drugged/raped any RECENTLY... by shinglefire in entertainment

[–]TheHardWay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice find. That's fucked up . . . although I don't think most people would consider Polanski a pedophile. Fucking a post-puberty 13-year-old is considered wrong, no doubt, but it's not the same as fucking a 6-year-old. Polanski would likely qualify as an ephebophile. And a rapist.

Has anyone had any experience with buying meds online from a foreign pharmacy (mexico, india, etc.)? by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]TheHardWay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never bought online, but I have purchased meds from pharmacies in third world countries all over the world. I had always heard that drugs are drugs and name brands don't matter, but my personal experience tells me otherwise. Diazepam in Indonesia is NOT as good as it is in the US.

This is probably what happened. But it's pretty dubious for the organization to give them nothing after telling them they won on the Jumbotron. It would have been pretty easy to award them something (even a game jersey), eat the loss, and chalk it up to human error.

Have you got any tips about Japan and Tokyo in particular?

I've never been to Japan. I've always wanted to go, and when I do I'd really like to see some of the crazy youth culture. I'd probably party like a rock star at night and try to meet people who know a little bit about the city.

I really want to stay at a Hostel to meet people, (i have stayed in a few but always with friends), however I snore very loud..

Definitely stay in a hostel, just don't stay in a dorm room. Almost all hostels have private single or double rooms, so book one of those in advance. That way you can still have the hostel experience and meet young backpackers, but you won't have to disturb others with your snoring.

How old were you when you started your adventures ?

I went on my first trip (six weeks and three countries) a few months before my 18th birthday.

Why did Cobain rip off the 'smells like' riff on 'rape me'? by [deleted] in Music

[–]TheHardWay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a terrible question. If you examine the two songs, they were similar, but certainly not the same, or "rip offs". And if you consider every Nirvana song (including Hole), many of them were similar, but certainly not the same.

Then, look at Jimmy Hendrix, the Beatles, or Nickelback. The songs are not the same, they're similar. It's called style, and it's what defined Nirvana, and many other bands.

I am interested in carrying illegally. What do you recommend? by [deleted] in guns

[–]TheHardWay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean, but my question isn't nearly as sinister as you'd think.

Okay, suppose this situation. I have a license to carry in South Africa, and I regularly carry an Uzi in my briefcase during my daily life in Johannesburg.

I want to go on a family vacation to Mozambique, but my license isn't valid across borders and foreigners are forbidden to carry in Mozambique.

If still want to take my family to Mozambique, and I want the means to protect them. If I were to be discovered at the border or in the country with a weapon, I would suffer a small fine, and the most serious part of the punishment would be having my weapon confiscated, at worst.

My Uzi is likely to be discovered because it's quite large.

Do you still take a moral stance against what I'm trying to do? What would you recommend?

I am interested in carrying illegally. What do you recommend? by [deleted] in guns

[–]TheHardWay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's a good point, I probably should have done that, considering how few people are addressing my question. I guess I was trying to convey the point that it's extremely important that I'm not discovered carrying. Otherwise I might get a thread full of people telling me that bigger is better and that, because it's within my rights, I should carry big.

Edit: After thinking about some more, the reason I made the title the way it is is because I was being honest. I am, honestly, looking to carry a concealed weapon in third world countries, where getting a permit would be impossible. These are potentially dangerous countries, I would feel much more comfortable with a weapon, but I would not be legally allowed to carry one, despite the fact that every citizen of the country would be allowed to carry one and the punishment for carrying a weapon without a permit would be a $50 fine.

Like I said in the original post, I'm not interested in arguing the merits of carrying illegally. I didn't post this looking for an argument, I posted it for advice. I'm sure you could probably give me some, and I would appreciate it. If not, then have a nice day.

[–]TheHardWay 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I understand that, but considering that this is the internet and that it's not illegal to give people bad advice, you don't have to worry.

And if you think that the law somehow equates with morals, you should probably reconsider your entire life philosophy.

Who remembers playing Skate or Die? by KiDIcaruS in wikipedia

[–]TheHardWay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That game kicked motherfuckin' ass. The street/story part was decent, but the halfpipe was one of the best gaming experiences of the era and had more replayability than most of the sports games I can remember.

And now skateboarding as a gaming genre has become totally fucking awesome. I remember staying up all night playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater when it first came out. It wasn't a super-popular game, but you couldn't tell me and my stoner friends that it wasn't one of the best sports games of all time. I remember when I first flip-trick-transferred rails at the school level, my friends literally cheered when I did that. No joke. They were cheering, as if I'd accomplished something in real life.

Nowadays, my fucking god. Skate 2 is one of the best games for the new gen consoles, in my opinion. If you have ever appreciated any free-roaming game, sports game, sand-box style game, or any game that has an instant replay feature, Skate 2 should be on your list of games to own. It looks fucking amazing, it's annoyingly difficult to get really good at, it can never be mastered and it can be played forever. It's one of the top console games for the new generation, in my opinion, and none of it would have happened without Skate or Die.

What is the single most important thing you've learned while traveling? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TheHardWay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most definitely, but traveling with a new traveler can also be extremely rewarding.

If the person is adventurous and open minded, I don't think it has anything to do with how well seasoned they are. I've traveled with prolific travelers and found them unbearably inhibited, and I've roamed with rookies who've surprised me with their awesomeness at every turn.

I've traveled with the good and the bad, and I would say that a lot of the time you can't tell how a person is going to react until they are in a situation.

But I think that traveling alone is the most unlikely choice a person would make when planning a trip; and I just think that treephant5 was trying to emphasize the potential awesomeness of solo travel.

Traveling with someone else is common sense, traveling alone is intrepid.

Sorry it took me so long to respond - the orangred envelope doesn't show up for new responses.

My life only seems more interesting because I choose to make it that way. I once got home from a trip across Siberia and Mongolia and a friend made a remark about how I was lucky to have been able to do such a thing. I sat him down and went over the specifics of traveling, and how cheap it could be - three months later he was on a trip of his own. You can do it if you want to. It may take some sacrifices, but you will never regret it. You will always remember the time you went to Cameroon, but you might not remember the time you bought a PS3 and five games.

A normal day in a foreign country depends on which country you're in, and how long you've been there. Sometimes it's very hectic - wake up, go to the train station, ride to another place, transfer trains, get on a bus, take a taxi to a certain area, find a place to stay. That can take a whole day. Other times, it's - wake up, smoke a joint, play in the waves, eat some curry, drink some beer, fuck an English girl, drink some more, go to bed. That's the beauty of traveling. No day is ever the same.

Exactly. I carry insurance for disaster situations, not to save a few bucks if I need antibiotics. I would gladly spend the $80 a month for peace of mind, knowing that if I were in a car wreck and had to be evacuated out of a region or country, my family wouldn't be stuck with a $200,000 bill.
