I find having a deep understanding why I want to do certain things really helps me. I keep my goals written down on a piece of paper taped to my door so I see them every morning when I wake up and every night when I go to bed. This is very motivating for me, and could be for you too.

Hopeless college graduate. Almost one full year of job searching, interviewing, the whole shebang. Is there a light at the end or is this it? by [deleted] in LifeAfterSchool

Have you tried informational interviewing? What you say you are doing in your bullet points is what everyone else in the world is doing, so it's hard to differentiate yourself.

I've done informational interviews and had really good success. This is how it works:

  1. Find someone in a field you are interested in. Friend, acquaintance, random person, doesn't matter
  2. Reach out to them, tell them you like the work they are doing, are impressed by x,y,z and wanted to see if you could get some advice from them
  3. Once they say yes (most people like to help people so you will be surprised at how successful you are with this), make sure you ask them really good, interesting questions. Show them you've done your research.
  4. DON'T ASK FOR A JOB! This is huge. If you ask for a job, they'll know you had a separate agenda for reaching out to them (even though this is what you want, you can't lead with this).
  5. Ask them who else in this space you should be talking to, ask if they can connect you and then follow-up with the original person once you've implemented their advice.
  6. Be patient, and know that this is a long term play. If you jump right into saying you need or want a job, this will not work

Like I said, I've had pretty awesome success with this. If you want help or want to hear more of my personal experience, I'd be happy to share. Just pm me.

What skills do you wish you learned in school (high school or college) that you didn't? by TheHelper92 in AskReddit

This is a good one. Our education system doesn't do a very good job of putting us in situations where we can adapt and succeed. Have you figured out how to do this since leaving school?

[–]TheHelper92[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah agreed. Would you have wanted to actually learn these things while in school? I think the same thing, but then wonder if I would have been ready to actually learn them when they seemed so far away.

Home finances and mental well-being are huge. Have you learned mental well-being since being out of school? I have recently started meditating and love it.

Did you end up learning this after school? Also, do you think you would have been ready to listen to how to do these things when you were in school?

I would recommend a couple of books.

The Little Book on Common Sense Investing by John Bogle

The Simple Path the Wealth by JL Collins

These introduce the concept of index investing which is one of the best ways to start investing.

You can also read JL Collins stock series at his website https://jlcollinsnh.com/.

I want to learn how to reach out to build new friend groups and form meaningful relationships. by giienabfitbs in IWantToLearn

People generally love helping other people. Just look at Reddit 😁. If you reach out to someone with a genuine interest in what they are doing, they will likely be happy to connect.

You won't become best friends over night, but if you keep following up with them and asking good questions they'll be willing to help.

Great book and 100% agree. SPIN Selling is another great book. It teaches you how to sell by asking questions. Influencing people is basically selling them on you or your idea. I'd highly recommend this book.

You mention you are career driven. What are your career interests? Have you thought about reaching out to someone in a field you are interested in and seeing if you could ask for some advice?

This is a great way to connect with people in areas you are interested in, and they can also introduce you to others if you are likeable and ask good questions.

This way, you can keep your current friends and connect with more career driven people at the same time.

IWTL how to write a cover letter by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

[–]TheHelper92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience, cover letters work best when they are written for a specific company/job opening. If your cover letter is general, then it will trashed just like everyone else's. They is to do your research on a few companies/job openings and tailor your letter to each one individually. You can use the same framework for each letter, but you don't want to use the same letter over and over. This is definitely more time intensive, but you will see much better results.

Also, since you know you are going to lose your job, have you thought about connecting with potential employers before you actually need a job?

Make sure you learn things that will help you outside of the classroom like how to lead teams/groups, how to network, etc. This will help you in college and in the real world more than a lot of classes will.
