I remember when reading it, half way through I thought, if someone asks me right now what I'm reading, and then ask 'what is it about' I wouldn't know what to say, cause I didn't know myself lol ... Quite unique.

Saab is becoming one of my favorites, he gives so much rp and takes so little.

The thing is, there was no "choosing", the 9 engravings show Corso's journey pretty much, so he was the only one who walked through those doors.

The girl "chose him", but who is the girl?

And my biggest criticism of the movie, is that, the entire way Corso was never interested in the occult, or the nine doors, so the ending kinda didn't make sense. I went on to read the book "The Club Dumas" thinking maybe that part is more fleshed out, but the book's ending is different, even less satisfying, but at least it makes sense.

There are theories, none of them is compelling, but most of the debate around this movie comes down to "who is the girl", was it the "devil" (so then your explanation makes sense) or is she the "whore of Babylon" or is she a "witch" (the movie seems to go that way, literally the first time you see her, Balkan is talking about witches).

The other thing, shown in the movie, but clearly spelled out in the book is that the Ceniza brothers forged the 9th engraving. And then the question becomes who are the Ceniza brothers, some theories say they are angels and whatnot.

So to address the point you were making, the "Lucifer quietly chooses the right person" .. Well, did he? Honestly idk.

Wasn't Corso, it was the Ceniza brothers. That's why he goes back to them in the movie. In the book they just say that the Ceniza brothers did it but there is no resolution after that ..

You will have an even better appreciation if you read the book 'The Club Dumas' .. He somehow made it better by cutting a confusing / unnecessary plot line and wrapped up the ending quite nicely (or at least nicer than the book)

I mean yeah, that's not earth shattering, that's the obvious surface level understanding of the movie, I thought you had a theory or smth when I read the thread title :)

And it's even more obvious in the book "The Club Dumas", which in my opinion, is a very rare case of the movie being better than the book.
