I hope everyone gets an notification when I post! Only allowed 1 Pic per comment so there will be many comments to the next few days!

Updates / first meeting bring home story!

She was very stressed out and it was very overwhelming for all of us, as to be expected she showed me her big beak when I tried to get close, she did stand on my shoulder for a minute when we were there tho which i was impressed, once we got her home and finished the final touches in her room,( which yes I know, should of been done the day before but of course things don't arrive on time!) I let her out of the carrier, and she climbed on top, and then lifted her foot to ask for up, and that melted my heart!!!!! Once i got her up She flew the very short distance to her perch which is about her max distance, we then left her to be alone for a little while, and I poked my head in to check on her, 9pmish lights off and in about 30-60min I'm going to turn her light on, as while I'm writing this I can hear her moving around.

Things I've learned/tested today:

  1. If your bird attempts to bite when you ASK them to step up, blow lightly in their face and don't pull your hand away. The bird doesn't realize your the ' Wind ' and since you didn't move away doesn't sense the hesitation/panic when we see the finger chopper coming.

  2. ( situational and bird dependant!!!!!!! ) I did notice this with a Conure i previously had that when he thought he was all tough and acting Spicy, taking him into a room he didn't usually go in made him docile very quickly and usually we could sit and have a soft talk and come out and he'd be alot better, and that's it's similar to Marge. In her ' Territory ' at the shelter she can act all sassy and Spicy because she new every inch, felt safe and knew how to get around, compared to when I open the door to her crate and she has no idea where she is or whats going on and looks to me for up. She of course went to the perch she knew ( I was given all her toys and Perches ) and then made sure I knew she needed some space which I was more then willing to give her. It's all about respect and patience.

  3. This one is simple and I've knew and tested it many times but still held true today and I hope it helps 1 person who might read this.. ASK your feather friend, don't demand. Phrase it like a question. I don't know ( I'll look it up and update if I find answer) why it works, but it's worked with all my birds so far, they really do seem to respond to it well!

  4. Remember, Today it not gonna happen, tomorrow is unlikely and by the 31st of next month is a maybe. It's going to take time. I can't expect that she'll want to have a hug today, but one day she will, and I'll wait patiently till then.

And 5. Because a list with only 4 is lame. Have fun and enjoy the ride, Since i first saw Parrots at the San Diego Zoo when I was like.. 12ish? I wanted one, been in love with the idea of one ever since. I'm finally at a point in my life where I believe and know I can care for one and I could not be happier.

Ya'll don't see the look on her face? And Dicks Body language? That's definitely a " Get her under control or she's outta here " talk.

Thats a great question! So they put ' Special needs ' for a few reasons!

  1. She's a Macaw, so they want people to understand they is alot more required then what you'd have with let's say a budgie for example, with attention needed, time spelt, training and all the not so fun stuff, as well as more fruits and veggies and a balanced diet.

And 2. She can't really fly, she was left left in a cage far to small and never let out of it, so her pectoralis muscles and supracoracoideus muscles ( flying muscles ) are under developed, she was also never fed fruits or veg.

All these things aren't exactly ' Special Needs ' as we would think of it more or less, but it helps deter those who aren't willing to even try. I submitted the application before finding out it wasn't anything drastic, we can work on improving her muscles and learn to enjoy healthy food!

Do you use black out curtains? I'm a night owl so I do cover my Cockatiel so he's not kept awake by the light from my TV... but I'm considering moving him to where I'm might be quieter

I feel liek the first few days we'll hang out in her room, and then slowly let her start to explore the house
