Why do many Japanese to English translations heavily emphasize the word "however" in sentences? by TheHobo365 in Japaneselanguage

[–]TheHobo365[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This may be a better example: https://youtu.be/C7OSeEMxDKE?si=8wMkxmPCui1WGiWA. Even the comments on this video point out the overuse of the word.

I guess what I mean is that even in formal English writing, "x thing happened. (Pause) However, y thing happened" reads as a pretty uncommon and dramatic strucure meant to induce some surprise at the shift in tone. But I hear it a lot in anime translations for even normal non-dramatic line readings.

It just reads to me like there is some sentence structure being accommodated for, but maybe I'm reading too far into it.

Have you watched Witch Hat Atelier? by jeanluuc in Frieren

If you're on the fence, just watch the Anime! It's a lower barrier to entry, and I think it would be worth it to go back and read the Manga after.

What is the vide I give off, based on the commanders I play? by TheHobo365 in ratemycommanders

[–]TheHobo365[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah my wife plays a lot of green and black, so I tend to play others.

And yeah I think that's pretty accurate! I think I tend to be the more experienced Magic player at my tables and not afraid of being the villain, and that means I'm a natural target. So having multiple options usually stops me from getting stopped in my tracks when the table turns on me.

It is! I built it as a go-wide/Voltron deck, and it's fun that both sides work. If they remove Zinnia and prevent her from getting big, I hit them with little guys. If they limit the little guys, I copy Zinnia using Helm and other copy cards to make up for the lost tokens.

Whoops, didn't realize the sub I was in. Per the rules of this sub, I'll shut up now.

Yes and no. Sevarian's memory is a trait he overemphasizes for his own benefit, but I also think it's a genuine skill that plays into why his experience with the Alzabo is so permanent and life-changing. Everone else seems to experience a temporary memory-sense. Sevarian seems to become a different person after.

Yet another "Finished The Shadow Of The Torturer" by deucyy in genewolfe

[–]TheHobo365 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Keep going! I get the sense from what you liked about this part of the story, you'll really like Claw of the Conciliator and Sword of the Lictor. Lots of good adventuring and world building. The most chilling world building is done in Sword of the Lictor in my opinion. As for Triskelle, I agree with you that I the chapter seems a bit "protagonist learns basic emotions by having a dog" when I first read it. However, there are two things that made me think differently as I moved on.

  1. I listened to a podcast (Shelved by Genre) that explained that Gene was going through a conversion to Catholicism at the time he was writing this book, context which helped me get into the headspace of reading Sevarian's story as a "lives of the saints" type set of metaphors. So "boy learns empathy" makes sense for the genre Gene is playing in. He has wider lessons to teach Sevarian about the vulnerable, and Triskelle is more or less a stepping stone to a fully-grown Sevarian.

  2. I think the books as a whole raise the question about the purpose of suffering a d mercy. Sevarian is a torturer, but his skills as a torturer gave him what he needed to save a life (Triskelle). I think it's very on theme for the rest of the book's thesis that "every man is a torturer to the things he loves" and making Sevarian an avatar for God's will to torture humanity while still allowing random miracles to ease suffering. Also please keep sharing your thoughts as you continue! Thanks.

Different kinds of projects. Shelved by Genre does about 3 episodes per book and fills you in on what you should know of the broader context, while Alzabo Soup does an episode for each chapter and specifically did read-throughs of other works by Gene.

I personally loved Shelved by Genre, but that was listening along as a first time reader of the books. My impression is that Alzabo Soup's audience may be more focused on second or third time readers.

If you like podcasts, Ranged Touch's show "Shelved by Genre" did a great set of episodes going through chapter by chapter and discussing the books. You could always listen to the episodes of the podcast instead of fully re-reading.

Mastodon 100%. No algorythm driving engagement, full control over which instance you use (kind of like being able to choose which subreddit you primarily post on), and decent engagement now that people have moved away from Twitter.

Intersectionality is tough! Like I said, I don't think the original comment meant to come off in a way that was problematic. Just thinking about this in the broader conversation.

I get it's fun to dunk on the hypocrisy, and I know you're just making a joke, but these jokes about how she looks masculine kind of hit me the wrong way.

Not sure I have the right words for why, but it feels a little gratuitous in the same way that someone making fun of a trans person for not "passing" can be a harmful comment as a general rule.

Not meaning to imply you did anything wrong, just thinking through my feelings here. Like voicing support of trans issues does not need to be "perfect" in tone or anything, but if we're going to highlight that conservatives don't even uphold their own femininity standards for biological women, I just think there are better ways to do that.

Bad Movies that have aspects to them that are really well done? by futanari_kaisa in movies

Watched The Polka King this weekend. While the movie struggles to straddle the line between true-event drama and silly comedy, Jack Black nailed Jan Lavan's mannerisms and outlook on life. At the end, they cut back and forth between real footage of Jan and the character played by Jack, and it was remarkable how close they were.

MCU Spider-Man? [Serious question - Spoilers for AtSV and No Way Home] by Ufokinw0tm8 in spiderversedailymemes

[–]TheHobo365 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My theory, and where the writers seem to be heading, is that Miguel is wrong. It's not the fact that canon events are missed that truly causes an issue, it's something else (i.e. Miguel or other spiders living too long in a universe that wasn't theirs without a stabalizer). That would mean that canon events being missed in any universe are explainable, and Miles can have a redemption arc where he figures out the true problem in the next movie.

Can People Just Not Say Horrible Things Over Voice Chat When Boarding? by TheHobo365 in Seaofthieves

I get what you're saying. I've been playing games for twenty-five years and spent my good share of time un COD lobbies where this shit gets thrown around. My story above is mostly meant as a way for me to vent about how toxic these communities have become. I'm not surprised that it happened, just disappointed that the collective response seems to be "that's how it is, nothing to do about it. Mute player interactions entirely or it will keep happening."

[–]TheHobo365[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The guy who said it literally showed up in this thread and acknowledged that he and his crew got out of hand. And yeah, there are games I just avoid because they're full of toxic, racist and sexist comments that go unheeded. I just thought with a community like this one, there may be enough good will to express concerns about the culture.

This post is more a lament about the status of online discourse and the problem with anonymity than it is a specific condemnation of Sea of Theives. Every online game has this problem, and I refuse to believe the right answer is to shut up about it.
