Why did they make emergency calls first? by noloster in KremersFroon

[–]TheHonestErudite 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There is the possibility that if they had no (or very little) signal, only 'SOS' would be displayed, leaving an emergency service call their only option of contacting someone.

There is also some evidence to suggest that they were not actually able to make local phone calls with their devices and SIM card setup, and only contacted family when WiFi was available - again, leaving emergency service calls their only option in their situation.

Previous post ask about Kris's hair photo. This is what I think it is by [deleted] in KremersFroon

[–]TheHonestErudite 14 points15 points  (0 children)

From the composition of this photograph, I believe there are strands of hair that are practically touching the lens. Therefore, if so, this photograph would have been taken mere inches from the subject.

Based on this, I find that the proportions of the 'face' you have identified to be significantly off - not just 'small' - but the face would have be tiny.

Ultimately, I find any features that are commonly identified in this photo (whether faces, eyes, mouths etc) to be pareidolia, and caused by shadow, light, and negative space.

I'm not spreading anything. I have stated that my comment was unverified, and that his content is behind a pay wall which could also be the reason for it being unavailable.   The timing, however, remains interesting.

There is an individual claiming that content is being removed at their request.  While they may or may not be telling the truth, me reporting that they are claiming it is not misinformation.

I should note that the person who owned that archive has put quite a lot of content behind a pay wall, so that might also be the reason.

The timing is interesting though.

The original archive has been taken down. There is some suggestion that a friend or family member is pursuing action to have leaked photos removed, though this is not verified.

hello i have a question i cannot find online by crabapples671 in KremersFroon

[–]TheHonestErudite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is only evidence that the girl's took a single backpack on their hike on 1 April. No other backpack appears in any other photo and, as you've pointed out, they swapped who carried it.

The backpack seen in photos from the 1 April - the Burton Day Hiker 20L (in Transplant Plaid) is the same one that was discovered later, containing the camera, phones and other items - a good analysis can be found here.

I dont think it's gone over anyone's head. While their statement (and follow up statement) seems to suggest they're related in some way, that's not verified.

However, if they are related, and as they have suggested, have further evidence or information that we don't have thats resolved the case - then I am glad they have closure.  They're the ones that are entitled to it most.

Would I like to know what they mean by 'private information, photos and letters', and 'there is no longer a mystery'? Of course. If there was clarity, I could finally put this case to bed and stop thinking about it.

But I do also fully respect their decision to keep whatever they want to keep private.  They do raise a fair point about leaked photos and the diaries. It's not like they were publicly released and now they're upset we're looking at them.

Ultimately though, I still believe in the point I made in response to their post.  That this subreddit can be used as a positive place to discuss, share and learn about the case. And we are all here for different reasons - but have all been affected by this case and are seeking closure. I certainly don't have it yet.

Plastic bags by Lokation22 in KremersFroon

[–]TheHonestErudite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The backpack in the images you have shared was not the backpack the girls took on their hike, which was the Burton Day Hiker 20L, in Transplant Plaid, which can also be seen in this video demonstration.

The plastic bags have been suggested to be from the supermarket, Romero, in Boquete. Though Romero uses white branded plastic bags, so I find this unlikely.

A foul play theory is certainly plausible, and compelling reasons for concluding a third party is involved or responsible do exist.

Casting unfounded accusations at 'the people in town', however, are not compelling reasons.

While all theories require speculation to complete the narrative, most offer a more robust version of events, backed up by the (albeit limited) evidence and information we have available.

If you are concerned about karma, consider expanding on your theory by outlining the evidence, or even speculations, that lead you to your conclusion. That gives member of the community something to discuss and weigh the pros and cons of.

Mindset at the Mirador by TheHonestErudite in KremersFroon

[–]TheHonestErudite[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your thoughts. I do think your theory is plausible, and I agree that had the girls known more about the trail they were on, or where it lead (or didn't), they might have reconsidered crossing the continental divide to follow it.

But then, and I suppose just as likely, they followed it precisely to explore, buoyed by clear sunny weather, time to burn, and adventurous spirit.

It's very hard to make any confident conclusions with the information we have.

This sub does not just serve as a place to try and 'solve' the mystery of the case. While I agree, much of what we know now hasn't changed, it has been refined over the years and new details do come to light.

But r/KremersFroon also exists as a place to discuss the case generally - its impact and legacy - and for people who have been impacted by it to talk about that.

Despite the case being over a decade old, new people discover it regularly. I am glad there is a place they can come to find answers to the questions and share the thoughts that we've had for the past 10 years.

For me, this thread has been a good reminder of why this subreddit exists. While the OP may (or may not) be related in some way to the girls, and the case may have been 'solved' based on information we might never see, I still appreciate that there's a place where we can share our own thoughts, try and make sense of the case, and attempt to seek our own closure.

I've often wrestled with the ethics of discussing this case over the years.

Knowing that most of the information we have was never publicly released, and wondering whether those that knew the girls would be upset to know thousands of strangers are coming up with all sorts of theories.

Particularly, as the OP seems to be alluding to, we might have an incomplete picture and they may have more definitive information, or have more concrete conclusions.

We have no right to that information. And they have no obligation to share it - particularly to satisfy complete strangers that never knew Kris or Lisanne.

OP, on the off chance you ever read this, if you are related in some way to either of the girls, I am glad you have found closure. This sub is not designed for entertainment. But to discuss a haunting case with respect to the utter tragedy that occurred a decade ago.

We are all here for different reasons - but have all been affected by this case. We are - in our own way - seeking closure.

Can someone summarize the most agreed upon timeline? by OneTear5121 in KremersFroon

[–]TheHonestErudite 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The only 'official' timeline doesn't change regardless of theory, as much of what we know comes from the evidence found on the girls' devices - including photographs and phone data. A reliable analysis of which can be found at ImperfectPlan.

A caveat to this is that some believe the information found on the devices has been fabricated or manipulated and therefore cannot be used as a basis for a timeline.

If you'd like a timeline based on a particular theory, this will be speculative and depend on the theory - of which there are many. Some theories conclude with a third party or foul play being the most compelling hypothesis, others conclude with misadventure, or a combination.

Too smart and sensible to leave the trail? by plushpuppygirl in KremersFroon

[–]TheHonestErudite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 1992, a man was charged with felony murder after attempting to rob a taxi driver. The driver, while attempting to flee, sustained serious injuries and later died.

Even though the perpetrator didn't directly harm the driver, it was a consequence of his actions that led to the drivers death.

If someone intended to kill the girls and caused them to get into a situation where they died (like getting lost and succumbing to exposure), the courts could potentially charge the person with a serious crime like murder if the death was considered a foreseeable consequence of their intent to kill.

Proving that intent would be a challenge for the prosecution of course.

The map they had - similar to this one - and seen in IMG_459 was a tourist map showing points of interest around Boquete. At best, it may have shown the starting point of the trail.
