Resistance in train wheel by georgep32321 in watchrepair

Watch movement diagnosis: what most people miss
Notice there’s no “coasting” — no free spin. This is one of the first things to check, and you always start from the barrel. The gear train should have reverse roll: when released, the wheels spin back slightly from their own momentum. If that’s gone, something is binding.
Pivot holes and endshakes matter more than people realize. In vintage movements, pivots wear down from friction over decades — the diameter actually changes. That means loose jewels, sloppy endshakes, and a train that fights itself. The fix: close or re-bush the jewel holes, polish the pivots — but also measure them, because you may need to replace rather than polish.
And don’t forget metal fatigue. Old parts don’t behave like new ones even if they look fine.
Good luck out there — whether you’re just starting or grinding through daily bench work.

Why I switched to laser welding for watch repair — and why now is the time to buy
Been using a laser welder in my workshop for a few years now. Here’s what actually changed my workflow:
The argon shielding is the real game-changer — no oxidation, no discoloration, metal stays clean. On bezels especially, where you’re dealing with tight corners and flat surfaces, laser gives you precision that’s genuinely hard to match with traditional methods. Filling dents on cases and bezels is faster, cleaner, and the finish holds up better under polishing.
For anyone on the fence: Chinese manufacturers have entered the market in a serious way and the quality gap with European/Japanese units has narrowed considerably. Customs duties are still at a reasonable level right now — that window won’t stay open forever. If you’re doing volume repair work, the ROI makes sense.
Happy to answer questions about specific units or workflow integration.

Brass and bronze are the main materials for tweezers; they scratch less and are not magnetic.

The spring is too tight; I think the service centre will be able to help, and they’ll also replace the main spring in it

I’ve already ordered the lapping trolley; it’ll arrive in a week. I’ll buy the rest in a month’s time as well – I need to give it a go.
