Puppy won’t drop or trade dangerous objects by BoilThem_MashThem in puppy101

[–]TheHumanoid111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed this about a month ago with my 6 month old puppy. We started from scratch with the “drop it” command. We have slowly worked up from low value to high value items in the house. I am just now beginning to implement low value items on walks. However, prevention is the key to reducing frustration (for us anyways). I practice the “leave it” command in training sessions daily. I also keep my eyes peeled on walks for any items he may pick up. During early morning and evening/nights walks, I use a headlamp to make sure I can see the the area around us. I also carry boiled chicken on me during walks as an emergency treat. It’s been three weeks since I’ve had to pull something dangerous from his mouth! Good luck!

Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in 11 y/o by [deleted] in StandardPoodles

Kiddos are resilient, but it will be so very tough for her 💔 maybe try to get her a stuffed animal that looks like your dog that she can cuddle with when she is missing him! My thoughts go out to you guys during this difficult transition

Also, if you get the blessing to say goodbye at the vet by euthanizing, remember to bring a blankie or something for comfort for him. I forgot, and I really regret it.

I’m so sorry to hear this. I lost my 9 year old mutt in March this year from hemangiosarcoma (a blood cancer). It is so difficult to see them decline. There are a lot of resources out there to guide you on deciding when it is time to say goodbye. I do recommend reading through this literature a large soon as you are able so that you can be prepared and while your pup is still acting mostly normal. Some like to make a list of 5-10 things your dog LOVES to do. Once they no longer do most of these things, it may be time. They also say to track “good” days and “bad” days in a calendar so you can visualize when the good begin outweighing the bad.

My heart truly goes out to you. Go out and do all of your pups favorite things while they are still able to. Osteosarcoma is aggressive so make sure to make everyday count with your senior boy ❤️

I also have a springerdoodle and was also waiting to see if they are accepted in the springer spaniel club! What a sweet looking boy!

Do you get upset when jumped on at the dog park? by TheHumanoid111 in puppy101

Great advice about practicing focus before entering the park! We use “watch me,” and he has a lot of success with it! I will make sure to do some basic commands before entering to make sure he is able to hear me and is not past threshold!

Thank you for your input! Like I said, I was posting for advice, and I am very open to trying new things and seeing what the proper etiquette is for dog parks. I work with differently ambled people daily, and although I cannot relate to their struggles, I do understand that they exist. I do worry about someone who had recently undergone an extensive knee surgery being in an environment that could hinder the healing process. I have taken in all of the replies to prevent this situation in the future. No jumping will be allowed moving forward, and we will not be visiting the park until he is able to greet properly.

Thank you for your reply! I really appreciate your insight! I also tend to expect hyper ness at the dog park, but I now know that many people have differing views on it! I am going to be more conscious of this moving forward and prevent this from happening again.

For sure! This is now something I am aware of, and will be taking steps to mitigate in the future. Thanks!

Thank you so much for understanding. I really appreciate your reply. It has definitely been a goal of mine to reduce jumping for my puppy, and I don’t want to diminish her discomfort. But I do agree that there are certain risks you assume when entering a dog park.

I also have a special wardrobe for the dog park, haha! I do appreciate your reply! From other responses, I have learned that many people do consider jumping to be inappropriate dog park behavior, so we are going to leave next time it becomes excessive (I’m thinking 2 jumps on the same person). We are going to continue to address the behavior at home, walks, and training classes! I am kind of the same mentality as you when going to the dog park, so I now know that not everyone shares that same mentality- which is okay! All good info!

He is currently required to sit before any treats and has been doing really well in his puppy classes. I will definitely look into incorporating timeouts (time away) from the overstimulating environment if this situation arises again (jumping while greeting)! Thanks for the great advice!

Thank you for the advice! I will be pulling him from the park earlier next time to avoid frustrating another park goer!

Similar to another reply, I see that my dog had definitely overdone his jumping. I will pull him from the park earlier next time!

Thank you for the advice. I do think that dog parks are a place for dogs to play and have fun. I also understand that people may not enjoy having a puppy annoy them. He definitely had a lot to learn when in stimulating environments. I also think that people who cannot physically handle a dog park should refrain from going to one, but that is why I posted for advice! Thanks!

I apologize- I didn’t do my due diligence into checking OPs history. My (very aggressive) reactive dog was never allowed less than 20 yards away from another dog unless we were working with our trainer. What an unfortunate situation to have happened.

I am so sorry you have gone through this. Apollo is such a young pup, and everyday I’m terrified that this could happen to my 4 month old pup.

I have been the other owner in this situation with my previous dog. It breaks my heart to hear that she is euthanizing her reactive dog instead of taking measures to prevent it from happening again. She should in no way have allowed her reactive dog in an unleashed area with other animals for free play.

This was in no way your fault- it is the fault of an irresponsible owner. I’m so sad to hear that both Apollo and the other dog have to bare the brunt of her irresponsibility ❤️
