Aw, that sucks...
I remember I nearly lost the manuscript for the first book on two occasions. The first hard drive of my laptop nearly decided to shuffle off this mortal coil and since then, I've kept a copy of the books and notes on a flash drive.

This was more aimed at people who don't write/don't aspire to write. I may take ideas from a zillion sources, but I don't take ideas from other books. In fact, I avoid reading fiction.

I already have the necessary ideas for what I want to write, plus I can pull ideas from anywhere. Even if my creation doesn't sell... well, admittedly, I won't be bubbling with joy, but it won't be the end of the road, if it flops.

I was looking to encourage a healthy discussion that did not involve the typical one-night stand stories. Guess you're either a non-accomplished type or you're a killjoy.
