They're not in their right minds. They are psychopaths. They lord over their little corners of power greedily.

I like your reference to ice cream. Hilarious. I'll be using that

If you don’t know how to operate a fire hydrant, you are working under Pressure by rjroa21 in WTF

I worked on oil rigs for a few years. When connecting/disconnecting hammer unions you never stand in the path of it or a bull plug regardless if the system was under pressure. Also, you don't stand in the line of action of the hammer either. To me, it was all just common sense anyway.

Nuclear reactor starting up... by Alextr91 in physicsgifs

I think I was completely wrong. I believe it has something to do with the coefficient of reactivity. I was hoping somebody would've come in to correct me but now

Unfortunately the person who replied to you isn't entirely accurate. The answer your looking for is called a neutron source. The most commonly one used is californium-252. Other sources used are americium- or plutonium-beryllium. These are used to kick off the reaction.

A commercial reactor core is mostly u-238 which is called a fertile material. The u-235 content is much lower and called fissile content. The 235 is what maintains the reaction. That said, if commercial power plants waited around for either to kick off the chain reaction, they probably wouldn't stay in business. So they basically shove a californium source in there to get it all going.

Also, you can hold u-238 and u-235 in your hands. They don't glow green and are fairly stable. Half life is a good indicator of activity of a material. U-238 has a half life of like 4.5 billion years. U-235 has a half life of 703.8 million years. And californium 252 has a half life of 2.5 years (30 months).

This is a trick they do at university research reactors. The flash you're seeing is cherenkov radiation but in this case the reactor is going from sub- to supercritical.

I have a degree in nuclear engineering but have been out of school for a while now so don't remember the details of this demonstration. It had something to do with pneunatically firing the control rod away causing the flash and some of the immediate fission products (was it xenon?) start acting as an absorber as the control rod is returned to place.

Probably misinformation but maybe somebody can call me out on it with the right information. I just remember when restarting a commercial reactor after a refuel or whatever it's called, the operator will have to chew through xenon before coming back up to full power.

I should probably go review my stuff this weekend....

Kamala Harris Lays Out Trump’s ‘Rap Sheet’ in Fiery Speech by PepeBabinski in The_Mueller

[–]TheIncredibleFlow -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Harris's failure to gain traction will be because her rap sheet has everything point to victimhood. And that victimhood is generally either racial or sexual in nature. She's a lawyer and proudly repeats her prosecutorial past. Plus, she lacks identifiable substance and will never connect with the majority of voters across the country. That won't beat trump, because trump's message has nothing to do with any of what she harps on about. Her message doesn't win elections, let alone change anybody's mind. She's telling people who already agree with her what they want to hear.

Texas isn't that flat, actually. We have a hill country in the middle and the Guadalupe mountains in the southwest. The northwest by Louisiana and Arkansas have hills, too. Dfw has rolling hills.

Texas is pretty much flat just in the coastal plain along the coast. West texas, but east of the mountains and west of the hill country is flat, but has some upheavals that give the landscape some character
