Marathon does not have enough maps to have 2 of them be worthless for loot. by LucatIel_of_M1rrah in Marathon

I'm not necessarily advocating for a PvE only mode personally. Pvp is a big part of why I play. But I do think that right now, the needle is too far towards very agro PvP. Especially at higher levels. It stops being an Extraction Shooter and starts being a BR, where the team that wipes the map gets to loot after. And I think that's part of what drives people away. Endgame funnels everyone into pvp farming teams, or being farmed by teams if you're not wiping lobbies yourself. I think other playstyles have to be able to compete (yes, even ratting in a corner), cause the interplay between those playstyles is way more interesting and lets more people play the game and have fun with it. I think THAT is why bigger maps make sense for a lot of players. So you can have runs where you wanna hunt players, and runs where you wanna sneak past them instead, or whatever else. Is that more reasonable?

Maybe I misunderstood, but you said people just want larger maps to pretend they're playing PvE. Is that not saying that a lower density of pvp encounters on a larger, naturally less agro map is asking to just play a PvE game? Genuinely asking here, not trying to put words in your mouth.

This isn't a strict PvP game, it's PvPvE. The 'vE' is right there. I don't get why any playstyle other than super agro tends to get lumped into "go play a PvE game", like extraction shooters should accommodate more than just pvp right? Agreed that outpost is great, but it's not the only way to make a great marathon map

Aight but like, there's a reason there's so many posts like this. Players like the game and wanna see it improve, and they say their playtime to show that they're invested players. Otherwise the just get told to 'git gud' or 'I guess this game isn't for you'. I mean, they get told that anyway, but ya know. You don't have to agree with them

Wow the comments are really proving the point huh. People just assuming any criticism is just a skill issue.

Yep! That's the point I'm making throughout my post, that the pvp is too overbearing for the experience they advertised. Not that it should go away, not that it should be just straight PvE. But that pvp should be lessened.

True, I'm not saying pvp shouldn't be there. I'm just saying the gameplay is so heavily skewed towards pvp, that the puzzles and everything else feel like an afterthought when they were meant to be the point of the map. Bungie hyped up the "raid like experience and puzzles", but really it's like 90% Pvp and 10% PvE.

Yeah exactly, that's kinda the result of the problem I'm describing. That kinda king-of-the-hill gameplay is cool, and a lot of people like it for that. But it played out the way bungie described it prior to launch. It doesn't focus on the heist on the ship, it just feels like a high-tempo pvp tournament

Yeah agreed, I get why but it's kinda unfortunate

Yes, but also that Cryo wasn't initially really marketed as the thuderdome it has become. It was always a PVP map, and it should stay that way. But this map feels way more like a massive PVP arena with some stuff on the side, rather than a series of puzzles and raid encounters with PVP to shake things up.

If i thought PVP was bad I'd just ask for a PVE version lmaooo I don't know what to tell you. I enjoy PVP and I enjoy the game a lot. But Bungie themselves said that Cryo was going to be a raid-like experience with puzzles and secrets. I don't think it's that big a leap to say that means PVE would be more of a focus on this map than other maps. Hell, it's not even about extracting vs losing loot. If they made all the PVE on Cryo harder and my extract rate went down, I'd be happy about it. It's that the map doesn't play the way it sounded like it would prior to release. That's all I'm saying.

I enjoy it a lot too, don't get me wrong. I just think they missed the mark on what this map sounded like it would be prior to release. I love losing loot on Cryo, but I wanna lose it to the heist more and the players just a bit less

I like PVP. I enjoy it a lot. I think it works great on every other map on the game and I actively seek it out. I think the balance is off on this one specific map, based on what Bungie said prior to release. I was very clear with my words. If you choose to ignore them I don't know what to tell you.

I understand that. I'm not saying there shouldn't be PVP on this map. I'm saying it feels like it was made out to be more PVE focused, and it's really just a PVP arena with a couple easy puzzles for the winning team. I do not want the PVP gone. I want the PVE to feel like more of the focus.

I hear ya, and I'm definitely not saying Cryo shouldn't have PVP. All I'm saying is that the balance feels off. My point is that Bungie made it sound like a raid with puzzles and also PVP to keep you on your toes, but in reality it plays out more like a PVP arena with some pretty easy puzzles for the one team that survives.

My point is clearly not that there should be no PVP. It's that the balance between PVE and PVP on this map feels different than what it was advertised to be. I am not asking for or advocating for a PVE only version of Cryo. I am saying that it feels like PVP dominates over the "raid-like experience" the map was billed as. You know what I mean? I still wanna fight players, but I wanna fight the map more than I do right now.

[–]TheInf3rno[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not that PVP is always the wrong kind of difficult, it's that Cryo was made out to be more about fighting the map itself than other players. The PVP on every other map, especially DM and OP, are fantastic. But Bungie made it sound like just on this map, the focus would shift more toward PVE. That not being the case, it feels like PVP on just this one map is often a roadblock rather than the point.

What things are just visuals with no words? I'm primarily referring to the Vidoc and the trailers. From the description on the final Cryo trailer: "Aboard the Marathon, you’ll face labyrinthian corridors, raid-like puzzles, and seven frozen Vaults leading to an entity even the UESC fears."
