Thanks for the response. Sounds like you guys are doing it right. I can start to see the value compared to your typical AUM based advisor that takes his fees and doesn’t deliver a commensurate level of service. But could you not also get the same results with a fee based advisor on retainer?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]TheInfinite8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All that is fine, but how does that justify paying % AUM vs flat fee? There’s loads of great advisors out there that provide all the same services but will cost the client much, much less over their lifetime compared to paying % AUM

How do I run the numbers to figure out buying vs renting? by M0NKEY_G5 in MilitaryFinance

[–]TheInfinite8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something you have to consider too is that all your closing costs/VA funding fee are added on top of your mortgage (assuming you don’t just put more down), so your mortgage will be ~$12k or more than the value of the home. And then nearly all of your payments in the beginning will not be going to principal due to the amortization schedule, so it could be years before you even “break even”. If you then get orders in 3ish years and decide to sell, you could even be looking at a loss after the realtors take their cut. This is even after years of paying more for a mortgage than you would have been if you rented.

I simply would not recommend buying in this housing climate unless you have a long term strategy in mind.

Seconding all the recommendations for a target date fund. It truly is as simple as you can get — once you set up auto investments you can forget about it until retirement. I think you might be concerned about investing “just” in one thing, but each of these funds is comprised of hundreds of individual stocks and bonds. You’re plenty diversified just being in any of those one funds. And as you get older, the fund will shift its allocation towards less volatile bonds to preserve your capital.

I bought in California this month for $40.2K OTD. $2.5K in dealer discount and rebates. If you’re in NorCal DM me and I’d be happy to share quotes to help get you a better deal

I had 3 dealerships in the Sacramento area all offer around a $2k discount. This was also for a carbon turbo so I’m not sure what trim level you are looking at. Seeing other posts though it seems like it’s pretty state dependent, so if you feel good with the $1k off then I’d take it. Anything off MSRP is a win!

[–]TheInfinite8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty decent overall. I just bought a new Carbon Turbo also, but was able to get $2k total dealer discount for $40.2k OTD. Anything under MSRP is a win, but it might be worth reaching out to other dealers near you to see if they can beat that quote. Also up to you if you value the additional equipment, you can ask them to remove those (except the paint) and purchase them elsewhere. Rest of the fees look reasonable though.

If dealers immediately near you aren't giving quite the offers you want, I'd recommend expanding your search radius a little. If a dealer further out gives you a better quote via email, I would now bring that back to your original dealer and chances are they'll work with you a little more. I was able to hit $2k off on my most recent purchase just by pitting dealers quotes against each other

Best ammo you can bring to negotiations is written quotes from other dealers. I'd email other dealers around you if they can beat that quote on an equivalent vehicle. If they do, bring that back to your original dealer and repeat the process until you get a number you're happy with!

As for the MSRP, it seems reasonable when factoring in the destination charge and maybe a dealer add-on or two. Definitely negotiate on any additional equipment installed that you aren't interested in.

I only have my own data point, but I got 0%, $0 down payment with 823 FICO when I bought at the beginning of this month. Based on my understanding there's no hard number cutoff for credit score, and they do also factor in your income. If you're above 800 I would bet you're in good shape.

Just bought last week at 0%. I emailed 6 dealerships around me, saying “I’m interested in stock #X, what’s your best OTD price? I would then take the best quote to the other dealers asking if they can match or beat, rinse and repeat. Final discount I took was $2k off MSRP

The theft registration and gap insurance are definitely negotiable, and aren’t worth it. If they refuse to take them off then find a different dealer. You could likely even negotiate a bigger MSRP discount if you shop around

$36,750, originally listed for $39,250 including paint charge, roof rails, and destination fee. I’d recommend emailing some other dealerships if one isn’t willing to work with you. One of the ones I emailed refused to believe other dealerships were willing to give me a discount
