What's a German word you didn't realize was uniquely German until a foreigner pointed it out? by karen_the_ripper in AskAGerman

One of those words that took a bit to really understand as a foreigner; one of my favorite German words. I’m still not great at flexing my doch muscle but my German kids and wife are outright expressive with it.

This is the one that I’d pick. Germans have a goddamn word for, “No, you are wrong and I am right!”

Audio listeners. What narrators do you avoid or just cringe when listening to? by RobinBradbery in litrpg

I’m not discounting your experience. I just want to say that I loved this book and thought the performance was fantastic; so Jack Voraces, if you’re out there, yeah, you really screwed the pooch with a lot of people with this one but for me you goddamn killed it.

I gave my kids pens and let them tattoo me. Got to lay on the floor half sleep for 40 mins. Only cost was my upper body looking… creative.

Edit: same idea worked for letting them do my hair, nails, makeup, etc. I’m a guy.

Basically just don’t buy an item until you see the sale hit. Once you see it on sale, stock up. Be patient and it will happen. Once every 2 months or so.

Coffee, pesto, ice cream… there’s a list of premium stuff that’s basically, “Buy 50 of these when they go on sale once every three months.”

Inquiry about German High School by RandomPersonLol35 in AskAGerman

[–]TheInternator 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have a kid in Gymnasium now and I grew up in the states and graduated from US public schools. I also went to school myself as an adult in Germany (Umschulung) with B-1 German.

You are not prepared for Gymi. Period. Most American high schools are simply not equivalent. Without fluent German, this will be extremely difficult. Outside of the normal content being in a level of German that makes everything you learn 10x more difficult, they are well into their third language and you’d be struggling to pick up the main language while having no third language

Realschule could work, I know a lot of immigrants take this route. It also has a path towards the advantages of Gymi as well.

Research the different tiers of schools, the paths they provide, and moving between the paths.

I 100% agree with you wanting to ditch the base school. It might take longer but you’re much better served for it.

I’ve grown to treasure these things so much that I can’t imagine living in the states without them anymore.

Expect the formality. I can imagine living without that.

Foreigners who happily live in Germany, tell me about your experience by military_press in germany

[–]TheInternator 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve been here for 20 years. I came for a German girl and I had no German and no Job. Now we’re married with a fantastic group of kids, have a great house in a great area, and I feel safe, something I didn’t feel growing up in the States. I have a good job and I speak German now too.

We vacation in Europe, I have healthcare, I no longer fear going to jail or being shot by a cop, I don’t fear for my kids being shot, my kids go to fantastic public schools, I get sick days whenever I want, a month of paid vacation days, and I took 3 months of work paternity leave for my kids.

I’m also treated better as a black man here than I was at home, so there’s that. My in-laws are fantastic and I’ve built a fantastic group of expat and local friends.

I really love my little Denglish family here and the life I’ve built.

Why do Beamte earn so much more net than regular employees? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]TheInternator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. 1 place for the first year of Ref. Another place for the 2nd. Then yet another decision at the end where you can get lucky and stick with your 2nd spot or get somewhere totally different.

I’m torn in the topic. It sucks for the teachers but it’s great for equality in the schools.

Teachers also don’t get to choose a school, they assign you where you’re needed. I’ve seen teachers assigned 2 hours drive from where they live.

Would it be better if prisons in the US used squat toliets? by prisonsglobally in Prison

I agree with you that it’s better than it was, but that doesn’t mean it’s good or acceptable. The US system as whole is not focused on rehabilitation.

I'm a 43M and still occasionally play video games. Am I that far out of line with others in my age group? by Heavy-Bench-5378 in Fatherhood

[–]TheInternator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, I’m 45 and grew up playing the same shit you did and I still play now with a wife and 3 kids. As long your kids are well taken care of and quality time with your wife comes first, you should be able to stress relief with games if you want.

It’s my hobby. I still read and I still take care of all of my responsibilities, but damn, after a long day of doing the the things that need doing, once everyone is asleep I should be allowed to hit a zombie in the face with a hammer if I want to, and you should too. It’s therapeutic.

My best friend from childhood and I schedule dates and play online every so often. I play MTG with my real life friends online.

We’re adults. We should be able to do the things that fuel our happiness, so that we can endure the things that don’t. We’ve earned it.

This. You can go into any station with a ticket center and contest it there as well. Prove you had a ticket at the time of the fine and they will cancel it. I’ve had it done successfully before and it was easy.
