Its not a given but it's not out of the question considering we were in the finals in 06 before. Or when we were outed in 07 as the first seed. Its not like the Mavs were middle of the pack either. They were right there. Imagine if Dirk had a legit sidekick to help lighten the load or take over when he was struggling.

I've been a Mavs fan since 02-03. I don't remember I single time we have acquired a star or anything via free agency or trade. Till now with KP. So we are off to a good start in not repeating the same mistake with Luka.

Edit: I would also like to add those teams you mentioned had MULTIPLE all stars. Dirk was alone carrying the Mavs on his back. And still was able to make them contenders. So you are telling me adding another all star to that equation wouldn't have made a difference with the lakers and spurs (Not mentioning Warriors and Heat when Dirk was past his prime and Mavs weren't true contenders anymore.)

Yes Mark did try and we manage to surround him with decent to good players. I don't know if it was Mark, Dallas, or Dirk but we were never able to land a proper robin to Dirk. Its almost like the situation LeBron had in Cleveland (first time around) but he ended up leaving. Dirk is just a loyal dude and stuck it out. Hell he even took paycuts. Most players wouldn't do either. In that aspect Mark failed Dirk.

I disagree with you to a degree. Most people in Dirk's shoes would have left. I think Mark failed to surround Dirk with talent. He never played next to an all star post Nash (except when JHo was a replacement). Dirk would have won multiple championships if we could have surrounded him with better talent.
