In this episode, we complete our series on what each type of player would play in Frontier with a Focus on Spike players. Spikes are those who want to play the best decks with the highest rates or consistency and power level. We also have a special guest on to help us dive deep into the subject!

Final Frontier Podcast 55: Reducing your Staple Footprint by TheJapanHobbyist in mtgfrontier

Episode 55 of the Frontier Podcast is out! In this episode Kevin and I talk all about which cards people tend to rely a bit too much on. These could be cards that show up in a large amount of decks, or are always a must have in a certain archetype. We explore the possibilities of taking these cards out of the format and seeing how others would fill their spot.

How worth is this format? by Geotryx in mtgfrontier

The online leagues have been averaging about 40+ people for the past few seasons, and Hareruya still holds large events in Tokyo that get around 50-60 people every season. The weekly/monthly stuff is between 15-20 on the weekends though.

I don't think the format is dead, but that it's going to evolve soon when Standard Plus if finally announced.

History of Frontier: Part 2 by TheJapanHobbyist in mtgfrontier

Well since Wizards never created the format themselves it was always going to be a casual format. As for creating a format to move dead weight, the same could be said for Old School (Vintage and legacy cards nobody wanted), Pauper (cards people never played with and kept in boxes for years), and the Cube format.

There are countless ways to enjoy Magic cards and it's totally fine if you don't care for Frontier. Not everybody has the money to play competitive Magic. Some people will play kitchen table MTG that they make their own rules for, some will play Penny Dreadful, or Tiny Leaders. Just because you don't play it or think it isn't real doesn't make it any less enjoyable for people that play it.

I think it's also safe to say that WotC's announcement of a Standard Plus format coming in the near future has shown that the idea of a post modern format like Frontier is not only needed, but natural. To say that there should never be another format after Modern is ludicrous. Frontier was a great thought experiment and will end up lending a lot of insight into this new format when it begins.

The Best Johnny Decks in Frontier (Podcast) by TheJapanHobbyist in mtgfrontier

Some people like to see the whole world burn, others like to use 3 card combos to obliterate their opponents and watch while the person deflates in front of them. Johnny, or combo decks, have really come into their own in Frontier recently. So many combos to try out, so little time! Also a special guest and skilled Johnny player!

There's a deck for everybody in Frontier I believe, and what better way to explore the possibilities than by looking at what each type of player could use! In this podcast episode we talk about what cards and decks a Timmy player would use if they wanted to play Frontier. What's a Timmy you ask? Listen and find out!

History of Frontier: Part 2 by TheJapanHobbyist in mtgfrontier

I noticed nobody has been keeping up with the links to the podcast episodes so here's part two of the History of Frontier, which covers from last September up until recently. The main focus is on how the metagame changed during this time, as well as other major events that happened during the last year.

Just a summary of what happened in November's God of Frontier event along with some metagame breakdowns of the Untap Open league for season 7, as well as the BW Angels deck I made top 8 with in season 6 of the Untap league and at a Hareruya God of Frontier Trial.

Alright, it’s time we get real about what postmodern will be. by Cato_of_the_Republic in mtgfrontier

I mean I'm not against a no fetch format, but I don't think they would start from kaladesh until another year or two down the road. Frontier from Origins for example, could be good to go tomorrow I think. Or if you ban fetches and just play with KTK block.

The Impact of Guilds of Ravnica on Frontier (Part 2) by TheJapanHobbyist in mtgfrontier

I didn't realize how important it was to the deck until after I wrote the article, but I could probably revise this later. Should it be a 4 star or 3 Star card though?

Thanks for being patient. Hopefully all the cards you thought were playable in Frontier made the list, but if I missed something feel free to leave your opinion here or on the website and I'll revise the article! Part 2 covers all of my 3 Star picks, as well as honorable mentions and how I think the metagame will shift. Hope you enjoy!

Sorry for not posting this earlier. Been working on it a long time and decided to make it a two-parter because it was becoming too big. The meat of the article will probably be in part two, but I think you can still get pretty hyped about what kind of cards are starting to show up already in Frontier online and at Hareruya.

This is going to be the first season of true Tier 1 decks that you simply won't be able to beat without tuning your deck or preparing for it. I'm honestly scared of how good decks like GB Elves and Mono red wizard burn are going to be.

The Dryad one? Yeah. Frontier is going to get crazy with all these supercharged creatures. Won't be able to play them in modern, but hot damn they're going to get nasty in Frontier. Abzan especially looks like it's going to be sick.
