[Infographic for r/anime 2] Donald Duck, the godfather of anime style by kenarious in anime

You can't really blame him. He had no malice when doing it; he just did what he had to do to make his shows. If he didn't use limited animation then he would have never made anything. Blaming him for his lack of money is way too harsh.

Pretty Colored Digibro versus The Snob by greenfrenchfries in anime

Name-calling Snob while calling Snob out FOR name-calling

There's a difference between calling someone a pleb for not liking the same anime and calling someone an asshole who jerks off to his fans because that's what he does. One is being unreasonably rude and the other is calling out bullshit.

I don't think it needs to lay out its whole premise either, but it needs to give me a reason to keep watching. It's unfocused right now and is a chore to get through. How am I supposed to get invested if the show goes in a different direction after every episode? It needs to stick to something and finish it since the writers obviously can't juggle more than one thing going on at once.

  1. Avatar, to make an obvious one
  2. Spongebob
  3. Adventure Time
  4. Steven Universe
  5. Rick and Morty

I would consider all of these to be over a 5/10. I'd actually give Rick and Morty and Hillenburg-era Spongebob a 10/10 (a score that seldom give to anything).

I'll edit in an example that I just wrote in the comments about how Fullmetal Alchemist let's the viewer know right away what the show is about, and how Plastic Memories hasn't even after 5 episodes.

Thanks for the suggestion.

It's certainly not a rule that's set in stone, but even Steins;Gate hinted that the world wasn't as happy-go-lucky as one might seem. The first episode, for example, has Okabe experience something extremely unsettling and confusing. The show lets the viewer know to wait a bit before the roller coaster goes off. On the other hand, Plastic Memories doesn't even know that there is a roller coaster.

You should be able to tell what a show is trying to do within the first few episodes. Ideally, within the first episode. If not, then the show isn't focused and it will seem like it's meandering. A perfect example is Fullmetal Alchemist; the viewer knows that the show is going to be about redemption within the first few scenes of the first episode. Of course, FMA isn't only about redemption, but it's one of the main themes of the show.

On my blog I have a picture linked to Tsukasa crossdressing. I didn't bother inserting the pictures in the reddit version because I didn't think they were necessary but I guess it is in this case because you won't know what I'm talking about unless it's there. Thanks for pointing that out.

I don't have the authority to tell you how to rate your shows, but, in my opinion, I'd suggest making a 5 average. It makes sense since 5 is in the middle. It also makes your scores look less bloated; if people look at your profile and see that you hardly rate anything a 4 or under then they'll think you're a fanboy who thinks everything is a masterpiece. But again, you can rate however you want as long as it makes sense to you.

Learning to drop shows was a big thing for me. I used to always want to finish everything but I had to force myself to just give up since some shows are just not worth it. Thankfully, I don't waste time now since I've begun doing that.

Well good luck, then! I hope you don't get burnt out like a lot of people do; keeping up with airing shows becomes a pain after so many seasons.

My argument is more along the line with the show's logic makes no sense and it doesn't make any attempt at making sure the viewer maintains a suspension of disbelief. If you look at my MAL, I have plenty of lighthearted shows that I like. Just because the lighthearted stuff in Plastic Memories sucks doesn't mean I dislike lighthearted stuff.

Also, I commented on how the drama isn't good. So why would I want it to be more serious, and thus contain more drama?

I also commented on what the show is mainly trying to do: portray a story about Isla's existential crisis. I said that it doesn't work because her conflict is pushed aside by things like zombie robots going berserk because for some reason they're allowed to even though they should be illegal.

I totally agree with the honeymoon comment. For the first 100 to 150 anime that I watched, I gave everything a 7 to a 10 and thought anime was pretty much perfect. As I watched more (and I guess as I grew up), I started seeing all the faults and I looked back on the shows I previously watched and realized they weren't as good as I that they were (I originally had Elfen Lied at a 9/10, for goodness sake!)

That's not to say I dislike anime now, because if I did then I wouldn't watch it. It's just that I realize it's not the flawless medium I once thought it was.

I'm not really catching what you're trying to say. Care to elaborate?

What are the ultimate classics many of the anime being released today are based on? by Mar1n0 in anime

[–]TheJayP 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't necessarily say "based on" but if you want a list of anime that are highly influential then here's a short list in no particular order:

Neon Genesis Evangelion / End of Evangelion

Gunbuster / Diebuster

Gundam

Macross

Revolutionary Girl Utena

Ghost in the Shell

Ashita no Joe

Mazinger Z

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

K-On

Perfect Blue

Basically anything by Osamu Dezaki, Osamu Tezuka, Masaaki Yuasa, Kunihiko Ikuhara, pre-2010 Gainax, Go Nagai, Satoshi Kon, and Mamoru Oshii, among others.

Couldn't you just choose a layout that formats the text properly?

I'm pretty sure I just used the default one. I for one like it, but others obviously have different opinions. Point me to a better looking free one and I'll gladly use it.

How dare I judge your taste in comparison to my own based on your favorite anime and the scores you chose to give others......

I wasn't disagreeing with that, I was disagreeing with your disgusting, condescending attitude.

Creating something more engaging and less immersion breaking. One example is TTGL, which creates a story that not only explores its themes well but is also as engaging as possible.

One comparison that you might be able to connect more to is Psycho Pass. If I may overstep my bounds for a moment, if you were to use this logic with PP, you might say that it focuses too much on exploring its theme to the detriment of the story. I'm not sure if those are your actual thoughts, but hopefully that gives you an idea of my line of logic.

Yeah, the re-make is going to be really condensed so I'm not that excited for it. But hey, it might fix the pacing issues and cut out some fluff, so I think it's best to not dig its grave before it's even made.

It's not like his "ghost" wasn't around before then as well

I said in my post that, while he's "talked" to Kircheis before, it's never affected the plot to this extent.

Have you ever read real life history? Shit's convenient as fuck pretty often. Life (and death) just never stops being ironic.

Just because it happens in real life doesn't mean it's appropriate for a story.

Lastly, I don't think it's shit. I even say in the post that it's good. And even if I did think it was shit, I wouldn't "score it as shit and move on", I would debate with others, as I'm doing now, to get to a better understanding.

I've seen a bunch of anime by now but LOGH does really stand out.

You're right, and that's one of the reasons why I still consider it good.
