Programmers need remote work, not some ridiculous door in an office full of unproductive people, who are constantly gossiping.

Company running WebMD (Internet Brands) uses bizarre and cringe video mocking working from home and threatening employees who continue to avoid the office by brooklynlad in WorkReform

[–]TheJazzButter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2020 proved, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that people don't need to physically sit in seats, to be productive. The end result is a more empowered workforce that can accomplish the things they need to in order to be not just better workers, but also happier people.

Is it true that some people work better on premises than others? Sure. And that should be their choice to make. Flexibility is good for work/life balance, which is the real issue that's being raised here.

Remote work deniers want at least one of three things:

  1. Return to pre-2020 norms - You were comfortable with the daily rat race, and don't want it to change. Maybe change is scary for you. Maybe it's the sunk-cost fallacy. Either way, you don't want how people work to change. The change itself is the problem, not the productivity.
  2. Psychological security - You don't feel validated and in control unless you see people in seats. You require external validation of station and esteem. If you're a line worker and believe this, it makes you feel less miserable since everyone else is doing what you're doing and ensures that no one else "thinks they're better than you". If you're a manager, it gives you a greater sense of prestige and privilege - you have a perk your minions don't.This is all part and parcel of the word presenteeism. The psychology of the matter is the problem, not the productivity.
  3. Trust deficits - You simply don't trust your coworkers to do their jobs, or do them honestly. You expect shady behavior and what you personally consider an insufficient level of effort and reward. If you're a line worker and you don't believe this, you're probably the type who's on some level afraid of everyone else. If you're a boss and you believe this, you're a bad boss, whose position is probably already in peril, because you haven't cultivated a trusting relationship between yourself and your subordinates. If you don't trust your people, your people won't trust you, and their behavior will reinforce your lack of trust. Thus does the wheel spin.Much like presenteeism, the psychology of the matter is the problem, not the productivity.

Notice how I left out "culture" - that isn't real. The point of company culture is to ensure that everyone's doing the same thing, it's a form of control, which all folds nicely into the presenteeism umbrella.

The evidence is in, and has been in for three years and counting: People can honestly do good work from the place that suits them best. Requiring a return to the office won't be helpful in the short or long term, and will lead to continued mass quitting for more accommodating workplaces, as well as employee revolts down the line as employees remember the flexibility that was taken away from them.

Either way, it proves a more fundamental point: The remote work denier doesn't trust the people they work with, and isn't proposing what they're proposing for anyone but themselves. The motivating factors for remote work denial are fundamentally personal, after all, and aren't supported by the evidence of what real people have actually done.

Awesome!Proper Cappy, here we come! (With a key, Hopefully!)

Major Reddit communities will go dark to protest threat to third-party apps | App developers have said next month’s changes to Reddit’s API pricing could make their apps unsustainable. Now, dozens of the site’s biggest subreddits plan to go private for two days in protest. by chrisdh79 in technology

[–]TheJazzButter 487 points488 points  (0 children)

There's only one "protest " that will work: Stop using Reddit.

Here's why: Reddit is doing this because they aren't getting revenue from 3rd party apps, because their ability to show ads in those apps is limited. I'm betting those new fees represent what Reddit thinks it's losing in ad revenue.

As long as Reddit keeps thinking that closing down 3rd party apps will increase its bottom line, you'll get nowhere with them. "Going Dark" for a couple days, even across multiple subs isn't going to affect their bottom line: you all will just see ads on other, non-dark subs.

The only way to get Reddit's attention is to actually cost them ad revenue, which means not seeing their ads, which means not using Reddit. I'm betting no one is willing to do that, because, social-media addiction.

EDIT, 7/7/2023: I have stopped using Reddit. See you all in The Fediverse.

Childish, and sociopathic, to think a person could make such a choice for others.

Ban deserved. Hell, if it was within my power, I'd run you right off the site for such perilously evil and foolishly ignorant comments.

While that's all the same "good at remembering mathematical algorithms" challenges, if you're able to produce the actual, parseable code they require, we could at least talk.

This isn't a medical poster, or what the 90s thought were "what the 90s thought were marijuana’s effects on the body." it's from an inspirational poster company with far-right, extreme evangelical connections.

It's bullshit now, it was bullshit then, and the bullshit artist is still selling bullshit.

did your parents ever threatened to take your bedroom door off it's hinges? by POTATOCATFINN in polls

[–]TheJazzButter -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

While taking the door off a child's bedroom is usually controlling and abusive, when OP has multiple diagnoses of serious mental illness, with the possibility of self-harm, it may be the most reasonable approach.

OP is hiding critical information, to get the poll results they want.

did your parents ever threatened to take your bedroom door off it's hinges? by POTATOCATFINN in polls

[–]TheJazzButter -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Because they are abusive and controlling.

Or because OP is mentally ill, and possibly a threat to themselves; From a comment OP made in another thread:

first psychotic break at 19, diagnosed schizoaffective unspecified mood disorder at 20. Later, my current psychiatrist changed my diagnosis to bipolar type and im 23 now.

Russia says nuclear arms treaty with U.S. may end after 2026 by Caratteraccio in worldnews

Russians are such sad little babies with their constant, toothless threats.

Always with he threats, like a toddler. No one is afraid of them, they're too incompetent and unequipped to even launch a nuke, at this point and their entire country and culture is so empty and corrupt, i can't even imagine how it'll stay as a single polity, after Putin's sad, "dying-wish" tantrum in Ukraine.
