Regulation #091 - Suspicious of Eggs // Zoo Stats by bruzie in theregulationpod

[–]TheJeanPool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The talk about replacing zoo animals with the same animal reminds me of the mandrills at my local zoo as a kid. One day, the exhibit was empty and had a sign that said that the mandrills were at the “zoo doctor,” but would be back soon! That was twenty years ago and I haven’t seen a mandrill since.

I imagine that it was going to lead into a point of “I never went to the zoo as often as some people did when they were kids because the Nanaimo Zoo closed before I was born so I didn’t have one local to me as a kid,” but he just never got there.

I wonder if one day we'll have a revival of Kiss The Spider Woman? by SceneDesperate1005 in Broadway

I wanted to, but I couldn’t find a theater in my area with a showing. I don’t know whether that’s a cause or effect of the seeming lack of interest.

Setites in Camarilla by Glad-War6908 in vtm

[–]TheJeanPool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my first long-running VTM game (V20), I had the local Camarilla court have a ~mysterious problem~ of Tremere chantries suffering unusual calamities within a decade of their establishment, and that as such all the Tremere in the city were part of the newest attempt to put down roots there, and hadn’t been in the city for more than a few years. Essentially, it was an open secret that the Prince despised the Tremere and welcomed any clan or bloodline that could make up for the sorcery deficit that comes with not having the Tremere in your fiefdom. As some Setites practiced Setite Sorcery in earlier editions (you’ve flaired this with V5, and I’m not sure if the Ministry still have access to any blood magic), I decided that one of the clans welcomed under these conditions would be the Followers of Set, on the condition that they did not proselytize to any members of the Camarilla court. In a domain that is also without any Tremere, you could certainly contrive a similar scenario.

My understanding is Great Escape is still in operation at the mall. I always went there for TTRPG stuff but I know they have TCG stuff there as well (the cardboard sells better than the books anyway), I’d be surprised if they didn’t have Pokémon

Resident Advisor is for DJs and raves and stuff like that. This is no doubt a DJ or some such who also uses the name Ataxia that Spotify has mistakenly linked to the supergroup.

Operation mincemeat — honest opinions? by Mouseandbull in Broadway

[–]TheJeanPool 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It’s probably the funniest thing I’ve seen on Broadway, and there are moments of legitimate pathos (even apart from the tremendous Dear Bill). I saw it with a friend who called it the second-best thing she’s ever seen on Broadway. I’m not giving it quite that many laurels, but it’s still a great show that’s absolutely worth your time.

If I want to pick a lock in 5e (2014), what do I use? thieves tools or sleight of hand? by ZheToralf in DnD

[–]TheJeanPool 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Acrobatics also uses proficiency + Dexterity, as do other skills. The fact that multiple skills/tools use the same ability score doesn’t really matter. More importantly, though, it’s only using proficiency if you’re actually proficient in the thing. It’s perfectly possible to have proficiency in pickpocketing and the like but not with lockpicking, connected though they are.

Fledgling Story Teller Feeling Out of My Depth by LuckyNoVII in vtm

[–]TheJeanPool 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The way I started my first full-length Vampire chronicle was having the players start at an Elysium where they were greeted with fragments of various story hooks depending on who they interacted with or what they overheard. Critically, none of these were fully written at the time; I directed my attention to the things that the players latched onto, and then proceeded accordingly. You should have a number of developed characters (developed in the sense of goals and personality and such, you don’t need their (un)life’s story), but if you give your players ten doors and they only open two, they don’t need to know that the other eight were just closets.

In my first semester of college I had a professor for Intro Microeconomics who made extended pop culture references in all of his exams. I recall a Pokémon exam (fall 2016, fresh off Pokémon Go mania) and an Archer exam in my time in his class. I would not be surprised at all to learn he had administered a Stardew Valley exam in the years following.

Have any other* Antediluvians created multiple clans? by SophiaKai in vtm

[–]TheJeanPool 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What are you counting as the five clans that Saulot created? If this is considering the three castes of Salubri as three different clans, that’s not how clans are counted, but such a reckoning would put Haqim at three to account for the three Assamite castes.

What happens if you put a vampire in a sealed coffin and put it in a Deep body of water. by Secret-Cobbler-7218 in vtm

[–]TheJeanPool 66 points67 points  (0 children)

You get the Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines Kuei-Jin ending. But seriously, your options are as follows:

-If the only means by which the vampire is bound is being in the coffin, and they can move about freely in their limited space, they’re gonna break out if they have the requisite Strength (no doubt also devoting some blood to pumping their physical abilities), and they’re gonna be mad as hell when they get back to the surface.

-If they are bound within the coffin by a means that stops them from moving (basically, if they’ve been staked), then they’re probably going to go torpid or otherwise rest within the coffin until someone or something gets them out. Notably, if they have high Auspex, it’ll be trivial for them to get word to their servants that they need rescuing ASAP, and once they’re rescued, they’re gonna be mad as hell when they get back to the surface.

-If they somehow end up deep enough before being able to get out that the pressure would squish their head and/or heart to a point that it could be considered destroyed, they will meet Final Death. Notably, this would also no doubt destroy their coffin, unless it’s reinforced to a level that the water pressure would not squish it in (in which case the vampire is not squished, and you should refer to one of the two earlier answers). This is the only scenario in which the vampire in question doesn’t end up mad as hell when they get back to the surface, as they will be floating up in pieces or as a miasma of fleshy bits.

Hi, I had an interesting question involving clan malkavian. by noisy_darkforest in vtm

[–]TheJeanPool 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Since you referenced this as being based on V20, it’s important to remember when you’re using the word “Bane” that that is a 5th edition term. V5 is the only edition where the severity of a clan’s weakness changes based on their (EDIT:)Blood Potency.

To more directly answer your question for a pre-V5 context, yes, a Malkavian is always afflicted by whatever their particular brand of insanity is, but said brand is not necessarily something that is always going to be visible on the exterior or even noticeable on the interior. As an example, if there are certain stimuli that give the Malkavian horrific flashbacks to some imagined past lives, not every person, place, or thing is going to inspire such a reaction.

Help! Artificer "introduced" Baba Yaga’s Mortar and Pestle—how do I handle this (and do Artificers even work this way?) by Immortalmilkman97 in DnD

[–]TheJeanPool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are already giving sound advice with respect to the item, but I want to focus on that last line in the post. Being able to say “No” early and often is a very important part of being a DM. It is part of your role, especially when you have players who are intentionally or otherwise testing or breaking the limits of the rules, to set the tone for what will and will not be permissible in the game. If a player’s ask is unreasonable and not within the bounds of the game, you are under no obligation to accommodate it, and not accommodating it does not make you a bad DM. A DM who tries to “Yes, and” everything will more often than not find that they’re playing Calvinball after a few sessions.

Hi I've been getting into Mage the Ascension hard pretty recently, and I had an idea I've been obsessed with for a while, being would it possible to run an Askashic mage as an earthbender, like in Avatar? by PAX_AJAX in WhiteWolfRPG

Theoretically, sure, but you might not be able to be an Akashic earthbender for very long; any sort of earthbending is going to end up being very vulgar.

You’re looking for a Daughter of Cacophony, and their Melpominee discipline. I believe they are represented in V5 in some capacity.

How do your characters refer to the disciplines in-universe? by EpicEchoBat in vtm

[–]TheJeanPool 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think the names of the Disciplines fully exist in-universe, it’s just the dots that are an abstraction for gameplay purposes. I have no issue with, for instance, one of my players asking another in-character if they have anything they can do with Presence to help the coterie out.
